WTF are we doing..

Sitting infront of video games for hours on end everyday or every other day REALLY does greatly affect your health =)

Ask my eyes, ask my knees, the circulation in my legs is pretty crap and sitting playing video games worsens that. The carpel tunnel (sp) in my wrists from computers and video games..yeeaaa.

HOWEVER, I love my games, and like what Zyn said it comes down to moderation. What a smart lady that Zyn.

Totally agree with this, Zyn, and Skaw as well. ^^

Im not just blaming technology thought, im blaming society, when i see a 7 year old girl playing beer pong at new years, or her yell at her mom for a cell phone to text on, i just want to pick her up and throw her in the snow and be like YOUR 7 YEARS OLD YOU SHOULDNT EVEN KNOW WHAT A CELL PHONE IS!

The majority of people who have kids, imho, do not know how to raise them, they just do it because they want a family, divorce rates are high because they dont wana make them selves happy. Alot of shit is stupid in this world now, Compared to the 1940's-1960's era. Family just isn't the same as it used to be.

and im not suicidal i just cant stop thinking about where humanity is going nowadays. Were not going very far, were just gonna sit here and whither away as far as im concerned

The fact is, there were just as many problems in the 40's-60's era, they were just a different set of problems. Families looked pretty sparkly on the top, but there was often some dark shit boiling below the surface, just like the same can be said of families today. Back then people hid it better, because the facade was everything. What everyone thought of your family - your family reputation - determined your standing in your job, your community. Nowadays it's less, because there are more people who couldn't care less what their next door neighbor thinks of them.

If everyone went out and excersized every day, ate three squares, and spent every moment on something that worked toward some goal, there would still be murder and famine and sickness. There would still be violence and madness. It's the way of the world. And if you're going to keep your sanity, you have to let it go. It's one thing to wish the world better, and do your own part. It's quite another to get bent out of shape over the personal choices of others that you will never, ever change. Like Sneaky said, if you feel so passionately about it, then go out into the world and do your part to make it better. Toss a pebble into the pond and let the ripples touch whomever they may.

Ah ok, I see what you mean.

But otherwise yes I'm in the same train of thought then. Perhaps thinking too much is a bit of a wrong word but in the context of what I meant it as it's like, always wondering this, that, or worrying if "should I be doing this?" that kinda thinking too much, which goes around.

There's 2 routes in a sense. Which takes maturity into it:

1. "hmm should I be doing this?" "nah." "ok lets go read a book." "hey I like this book." "I want to write my own." (good way, and as you (Sneakypants) put it, doing something about it and not letting it take you over."

2. "hmm should I be doing this?" "nah i'm wasting my time." "lets try this other game here." "hmm I'm bored, what the...?" "I'm wasting time here..." <activity closes> "Let me bug someone else..." "Hey why do you do <activity>?" (reason/response given) "Don't you find it's a waste of time? Shouldn't you go out more?" ... and so on

and im not suicidal i just cant stop thinking about where humanity is going nowadays. Were not going very far, were just gonna sit here and whither away as far as im concerned
Life is a zero sum game, afterall, accept that and just wait your turn to move on. In the meantime, make yourself happy, make someone else happy, just fill it up. You won't know where it's going to go anyway, and nor will anyone else.

Yeah, theres one slight different though. If you play video games in moderation it wont really hurt you besides wasting your time (from viewpoint of some people). But if you do other stuff justin was talking about (smoking, drugs, etc) in moderation, you're still killing yourself :P

And wasting time. apparently...

This isn't technology's fault, or the people who create it. It isn't even the fault of the marketing companies who avidly pitch the new and best.

The fault completely lies with the person who allows himself to become consumed with the "coolness" of technology, games, text messaging, or anything you can fill-in-the-blank, and the person who worships technology.

There's no problem with a seven-year-old being aware of cell phones. There's a massive problem when said parent or guardian cowtows to the screaming.

Humanity, as a whole is progressing still. We still innovate, we attempt to make our lives a little easier (by the creation of new technologies). We still have real relationships outside of our virtual domes. We live, we breathe, we can still move on our own.

The sky is still blue, and the grass is still green. The stars still shine at night in some places of the world.

Don't like games, then don't play them. Nice to see you think so highly of us "stupid" people though. I don't know about you, but I manage my time. I'm not going to say "Omg, I watched TV for 30 minutes, I could have been brushing up on my Italian". Not every second of your life has to be taken up with "bettering" yourself, relaxing is good for your mental health.

One of my papers was on Addictive Personality, you may want to look into that if you have such problems.

Ugh. No thanks. There may be a lot of problems in society these days, but I'd rather have those than some of the shit that was going on in that era. It's still legal to fire someone for being gay in most states these days, but back then you could just as easily go to jail for it. Let's not forget Jim Crow and women who were expected to stay in the home.

I think your rose-colored nostalgia glasses have a few cracks in them, because they're obviously distorting your vision of the past.

Exactly. If you're looking for a straight, white mans world maybe that's the era for you. Then again, you never actually lived in that era so it's easy to watch "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Andy Griffith" while recanting "Golly gee those days were swell". Try watching "All in the Family" instead.

Forgive the long post I just have a few things to say about this issue.

I started really getting into games around when I graduated high school. I had been playing FFXI for about a year and a half at that point – though always as a “I’m so bored I’ll play FFXI for a couple of hours” situation. Well, all of my friends moved off to college and I was left alone in my hometown.

I went to a community college and got a pretty decent job – and, more importantly, great friends on FFXI. I was very depressed during those two/three years I spent doing basically the same thing (school, work, school, work) and it was a great relief that I could come home and play FFXI and talk out my problems with my friends. At some points, I think these guys & gals really made a difference in my life. I wasn’t really ‘addicted’ to the game as more as I was ‘addicted’ to the people. They were the only friends I had (as sad or good as that sounds) and they were all I needed at that point.
I’ve since graduated from community college and went on to a major university. I tried the party life but it wasn’t for me. I tried the busy club life, but it wasn’t for me. I tried to work out every day but… it wasn’t for me. I noticed myself getting a little big around the tummy so I cut back on sweets and started putting healthier things in me. I didn’t work out (I hate exercise) but having a healthy diet and abstaining from drinks like pepsi and things allow me to stay an even 5-10lbs overweight. Not bad, considering.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that video games are not a waste of time, and neither was FFXI. I don’t want my 4 years back from playing it – I had great people to help me out through situations, offer advice, and make me laugh on days I didn’t think I could. I’m still close to a lot of the people I played FFXI with (I’ve now graduated to WoW) and I know they’d help me out in a pinch if I asked them (and vice-versa, OMF members  ).
If you think video games are a waste of time – come live in the Midwest. When there is little light for the day and 6 inches of snow on the ground… you’ll be thankful for something to challenge you like a good video game.

About fat people and families:

I guess I’ve never had the issue of family come up. My parents are the best a child could ask for, even if we were poor and didn’t have all the coolest shit as soon as it came out, we still had clothes, food on the table, and presents under the Christmas tree.

The problem with America is not fatness, or family values, but selfishness and self-centeredness. We’re so consumed with being individual that we lose sight that there are other people around us. If we’d take time to actually help someone just for the sake of helping them – then we’d see a drastic difference in our quality of life and the quality of life in America.

I’m sick of the ‘YOU’ that media and advertising throws around. Wouldn’t YOU like a Big-Mac, wouldn’t YOU like to be beautiful, wouldn’t YOU like to be rich?
It’s enough to be ‘rich’ by being a positive force in the world. That’s all I try to do.

Has any one sat down to realize what were doing with our lives sitting here reading/writing these posts, looking on youtube.. playing Video games.... What has society come to?

Seriously i can't stop thinking about how stupid it really is to play World of Warcraft or play FFXI or any other online game... Or any game for that matter at all, Why are we addicted to something so 'stupid' (don't have another word for it). Think about it... yes its a way to keep in touch with people, yes its a source of entertainment.... But really the 10 minutes i spent typing this message up i could have spent reading a book and expand my knowledge capacity, i could study a foreign language, OR perhaps even go work out AGAIN today.

Where are we going with our lives? Before computers, Before video games, people hung out, went outside to have fun, they didn't sit inside and watch TV for 20+ hours a week or get abnormally obese.

I think ive reached a breaking point, and im just sick of video games in General :|

If it took you 10 minutes to type this, you should use your new found free time to learn to type faster.

Why do you feel every hour of the day needs to be filled with something productive? If I have a rough day at work, all I want to do when I get home is flop on the couch and watch tv with my girlfriend. I don't want to learn Cantonese or knit a sweater, I just want to relax.

Playing video games or watching movies or reading books are all the same thing. You may feel smarter after finishing a book, but all three things expand your mind in different ways. Plus, if you're concerned about being social, video games and watching movies are ten times more social than sitting alone and reading a book.

To each his own, I guess.

Do what you need to so you'll never have to say "What if..."?

I quit. This game never made me feel like I accomplished anything.

What about our friendship?! Did it mean nothing to you!?!?!

Lol, nah it's just the opposite. The people in this game were the only reason I played as long as I did, and still come to this website.

That and your insatiable appetite for gay sex.

Honestly, reading books is a wonderful thing, but that's not the only way to better yourself, nor is working out, etc. Engaging in a lively debate (preferably not those of the flameboard "U R GAY LOLOL" but more the "I see your point, but the flaw in that argument is ...." type) is very mentally stimulating and is just as good for you as reading a book, etc. Also, never underestimate the value of these things as a stress reliever, stress has been shown to be a major cause of numerous health problems, and getting rid of it is never a bad thing.

I don't think i once said i wish it was like the 40s because homosexuality wasn't aloud, and racism was tolerable....

I know you didn't. Those are just the examples I used to point out why I wouldn't wax too nostalgic about them and use them as an example of how things have gotten worse when on the whole they've gotten a lot better.

Unless you're Amish. If that's the case, you're probably not reading this anyway.
