NYAF: X-Men and Wolverine Manga Due
Del Rey and Marvel team up for a whole new take on the X-Men.
by Chris Carle

US, December 9, 2007 - Today at the first ever New York Anime Festival, publisher Del Rey Manga announced a new project to produce original English manga (OEM) based on some of Marvel Comics' biggest characters. X-Men: The Manga and Wolverine: The Manga are both due in Spring 2009. Each will be two volumes, published in the traditional manga style: roughly 200 pages at the 5 X 7 ½" size with a black and white interior. The books will read left-to-right.

Although they will utilize characters from Marvel lore, the books will radically deviate from the style of the superhero comics. At the announcement panel, Del Ray Manga's Associate Publisher Dallas Middaugh said, "We're aiming this squarely at the manga audience." He went on to say that, "While we're trying to be very true to the characters… there is very little of this that is continuity-based."

Therefore, X-Men: The Manga will be a shojo title, marketed specifically to teenage girls. Editor Tricia Narwani called it "like X-Men meets Fruits Basket." The story will still be set in the School For the Gifted. Unlike previous X-Men incarnations, it will be an all-boys school, with Kitty Pryde as the only female student (and protagonist). In the manga, she is "torn between the popular Hellfire Club, led by the flame-throwing mutant Pyro—and the school misfits, whom she eventually bands together as the X-Men."

In preliminary concept sketches, Jean Grey, Mystique, and Wolverine were shown. Although the title will touch on deep, dramatic themes, Narwani promises a mix of drama and light comedy. In addition, Middaugh hinted that new characters are a possibility.

The title will be written by the husband/wife team of Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman. Telgemeier is best known for her work as writer/illustrator of The Babysitter's Club graphic novels. Dave Roman is an associate editor of Nickelodeon Magazine and is the co-creator of Jax Epoch and the Quicken Forbidden.

"Wolverine is going to go in a more shonen direction," said Middaugh. "We're going to take the Wolverine story and it's not what you're going to expect at all."
Although the artist for Wolverine has not been set, Del Rey is going with Anthony Johnston for writing duties. Johnston is best known for his work on Alex Rider and Point Blanc.

Marvel has made previous forays into manga, but several panelists agreed that this is the most frank attempt the comics giant has made to producing titles specifically geared to manga sensibilties.

Marvel and Del Rey already work together publishing novels for Marvel films. The concept of the manga project actually came up in talks to do the upcoming Iron Man movie novel.

I just can't believe it O_O

Wolverine WITHOUT the sideburns AND Smiling???

Anyways, yes, this is manga as they directly said it will be manga style, so it goes here ^^

2009 is going to be interesting.

I thought that they did this a long time ago? I know that they did a Spiderman one some time ago. We rape their comics so why shouldn't they do the same with ours? Actually we rape our own comics too. XD Who knew Logan could look so pretty.

>_>; my initial thoughts were 'its going to be bad' even with the movies which were incredibly good every sort of comic, cartoon, etc. has its bad moments...I feel this is going to be one of them.

How many times have we done the X-Men story? Not sure if it has an end but eventually creativity dries out; sounds like a means of income rather than entertainment.

But then again I'm a natural skeptic, someone convince me otherwise

Well the current concept art has Wolverine WITHOUT his trademark sideburns... and he's smiling.... yes it is technically gonna be a shonen demographic but come on..... Wolverine NEEDS his sideburns.

I'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt at the moment, I'm not gonna say it will suck or rock until I read it for myself in 2009. Its a long time, things change. We'll probably be hearing more and more about this in the coming months though.

edit: btw has anyone else noticed he looks kinda like Zack from FFVII?

lol He kind of does. XD I will probably check it out at the bookstore if I don't buy it. Who knows it may be good. Shadowcat is my favorite comic character and she's part of the main focus from what the article says.

meh looks to me that they finally pussified wolverine :nono:

Is anyone else getting sick of all the Wolverine hype? Seriously, it's getting fucking old.

Needs more Gambit, he was the fuckin' man.

Wolverine just needs a purse and he's ready for a night on the town.

hell yes, I dont think he was even in the movies...

My old rottweiler was named that, like the character he was the best.

wolverine is cool too, but Gambit owns

Wow.. wolverine looks..
well every other version of wolverine out there is ready to kill whomever drew that.

I think he got left out the movies, so why not the Manga? :<

Xmen movies >> Fuck story line! Let's just throw in shinny special effects.

idk why he wasn't in the movies, I kinda disliked the writing staff for leaving him out, and the 3rd film, that got me annoyed more than anything as I'm sure anyone can agree that some were our favorite characters in any X Men series.

Spoiler:
Jean Gray Just killing everything in her sight was just wrong, even killing Cyclops was wrong... sure he was my least favorite member of the X Men, but still, why did they have to kill him?

Edit: What Myrrh said, hilarious ^^

I still haven't seen the third film, 1 and 2 were shit, since when was Logan so God powered? Christ, give the others more screen time, I have yet to see a decent comic -> Film translation.

V for Vendetta was the closest I think I've come.

In that case you might not like the 3rd film as well. Basically its a Logan-fest as well.

The movie version of Psylocke was an abomination as well. For all we know gambit was actually in the movie but they warped him to such a degree they decided not to tell anyone afterwards. How many here actually knew psylocke was in the third movie?

Don't bother. I'm pretty sure the third film gave me eye cancer.

The first two, while not good, were at least fun to watch.

V was good times. I liked some of the book's things better, but the movie was still pretty sweet.
