huh, I don't get it, why do they have so many games that are NOT FOR FUCKING KIDS! And then they ban the name cause it might be harmful to children playing? I dunno.. I think they are just homophobes >.> stupid X-Box Live community fails day in and day out.

And lol at the first comment... I guarantee that person (like many others) flaunt their straight ways all over the place too (things like talking about a hot girl or hot guy or sex or such :\). Hypocrisy ftw?!

I don't understand why so many more dicks seem to be on X-Box Live compared to other online communities I've played on :\

How about because kids could be playing a child-friendly game online and have someone with an offensive name log on? He made the tag, probably to garner attention, and someone complained so they made him change it. It's the same as the system in FFXI, you get enough complaints and they'll make you change it.

*sigh* doesn't anyone remember the time when "Gay" meant happy? Like in The Flintstones?

... God I'm old ._.

let's point something out though, Baja. They are saying it's a sexual innuendo. Since when does Sexuality = a sexual innuendo? :\

And how many of those people online are probably talking about how they are going to go "fuck their g/f" now (I swear, I hear that so much it gets annoying, no one cares >.>). And most of the games for X-Box ARE NOT for children. I can't even really think of any game for X-Box that is geared towards children hmm... so saying that they don't want to explain this to a parent is stupid.. it's more my problem with the parent than with Microsoft or the X-Box Live community though lol... since the parents fail to take responsibility for the games THEY buy the child not really paying attention to the type of game it is.

Honestly I understand where your coming from but you have to think of it like microsoft does, they dont wanna get sued by parents that have kids playin on XBL, and the easyest way to do that is to eep a handle on things that are seen by EVERyone re regardless of what game your playing,

For instance if you were playin halo yesterday and ran into a player called "Ilikevagina" as there gamertag, and your son or daughter got on the next day to play viva pinyata, That name would still be in your recent player list and the kid could have access to seeing that name. and it might scar the little tyke mentaly.

Anyway it doesnt really matter to me lol my gamertag would never offend anyone so lol it dont apply to me

Its called common sense, and MS knows that almost no one has it. You shouldn't have to be told not to make a make a name with sexual innuendo in it, but because people can't do that they have to put a blanket statement for all of it, even in the most minor of forms (i.e. this case).

I don't think the ban was deserved, but its easily seen why it happens.

When are we just going to outlaw posting links to Kotaku?

He was probably reported by Joe Biblethumper. I doubt any good parent would care to report him, as they'd happily answer their child if they asked them what Gay meant.

Toulouse clarifies that "yes 'TheStraighterGamer' or 'TheHeterosexualgamer' would have gotten the same treatment and would have been found to be in violation and forced to be changed," adding that gamertags along those lines have been banned in the past.
Disregard for a moment that this was probably said only to soften the blow MS would probably get from this. From the facts provided, they aren't homophobes.

hehe, you're assuming they are good parents :P sadly the percentage of good parents seems to be going down :( And his name IS NOT A SEXUAL INNUENDO! Sexuality DOES NOT make it a sexual innuendo. I don't see the problem with someone being proud of their sexuality, that's fine. I agree that making a point of it all over the place is annoying but just being his name doesn't mean he's going in every game shouting how awesomely gay he is or whatever. I don't care about a name so long as the person themselves aren't going around just constantly talking about it. I would be fine if there was a gamer named "TheSTRAIGHTGamer" or whatnot.. that's not a big deal either. I bet you that they honestly wouldn't ban that name... and I bet you 90% of the community wouldn't have a problem with it just because that dood is straight.

The X-Box live community seems to be one of the ones with the most amount of bigots I've ever seen/heard. And thus, they fail. Why are they like that? I dunno.. the other problem I still have is Microsoft claiming the bullshit of "don't want kids to experience it" when 99% of their library is aimed for people like.. 16+ (like mid-teens and up). It just seems stupid to me. Ah well...

That comment about MS banning TheStraighterGamer or whatnot is bull, they wouldn't have banned them, I should see if I can get a friend when he gets his 360 to make a Live Account with one of those names or a name like it, I guarantee he wouldn't be banned.

And what's your problem with Kotaku, Makelith? :P

I'd do this more often for shits and giggles if I didn't share my bro's account.

Or they could go after him because they think he's overcompensating. Or a new handle of TheGayergamer

Why don't you do that then.

Nothing else to add. This was just on my clipboard.

they can make all their games for ages 16+ but they still know that certain parents will let their kids play whatever the game of the month is. this is just a way to cover their asses so they dont get sued by some overbearing parent. im willing to bet that they would ban a name like "thestraightgamer". they want to keep their fan base happy and if people complain about it enough, then they will do something about it.

To be fair, rating doesn't mean people under the Age listed aren't allowed to play the game, but that the content is suited for people that age and up. It's no different from movie ratings. You could very well just up and one day decide to take your 5 year old child to an R-rated slasher flick. No one can stop you from doing so. It's entirely up to your judgment as a parent if you want to expose your children to certain kinds of content. But don't overlook that most T and MA rated games simply get their ratings from the kind of humor they employ and the amount of violence thats portrayed. Rarely is it because of sexual content.

Sexual Innuendo and Sexuality have one very important thing in common, and if you can't tell, it is sex. Now, people can buy games for their kids based on the content of the game, because parents can control if their kids play the games or not. It's not MS' fault if you are a shitty parent. However, the second you take that power out of the parent's hands it becomes MS' problem, and they don't like to have problems. They don't care about weather it is offensive to everyone or not. It was offensive to enough people and enough of those people took action to make MS have to do something about it.

How do you even know this? I find it hard to believe you have spent enough time on xbox live to make any sort of claim like this. Of course i've come across my fair share of snotty, 12 year old bigots, but nothing to that extent. I guess that is because the people i roll with are usually the ones that win, so i don't often have to deal with shit talking coming at me.

That comment about MS banning TheStraighterGamer or whatnot is bull, they wouldn't have banned them, I should see if I can get a friend when he gets his 360 to make a Live Account with one of those names or a name like it, I guarantee he wouldn't be banned.

Because of MS bans names, and filters words, there isn't a whole lot they can do. They can ban a word like "Gay" from gamertags, because by and large that applies to only one thing (that being sexuality, not something they want to deal with), whereas a word like "straight" could mean many things based on context (something like my friend "Straight Shooter" vs "Thestraightergamer"). For something like Thestraightergamer, it would have to be complained about, because it isn't something MS can just look at, which is how i imagine thegayergamer got caught. There is only so much that can be done by anyone.

And what's your problem with Kotaku, Makelith? :P

Because i know all too many people that take Kotaku's word as law when it comes to anything video games. I can hardly open up a video game thread without seeing at least one kotaku link. Yes, its a handy gossip site, but good god. People that come in to my store ask me if i have read the latest kotaku entry. I tell them no, because i prefer a source that is actually credible when i am going to get my hopes up over a game.

Besides, one of the writers admittedly e-mails Jack Thompson in his free time.

To be more fair, to say that a certain systems community consists of the most amount of bigots is completley wrong.
Because the same kind of gamers play on all other consoles and belong in many other communities too, i have yet to play on a system where i havent run into that crap every other game.

And the name was against the rules, so it was dealt with. My friend had a name CooterHunters that got banned too, and thats a straight reference. I dont see how he expected anything less, He did it for attention. I dont know a gay person who would purposely want a name just to make sure everyone knew they were gay. I certainly dont wanna run around and tell everyone im straight, because its my business and not a public forum of display.
He wanted the attention, and now he has it.

it's not MS I have a problem with that much compared to the people :| it's far more the problem that there are so many homophobes I've found online. One of my friend's is gay and avoids from even talking about it online cause when he was he was horribly bashed.. was sad. As usual, people disappoint me :( MS actually didn't bother me so much.. I mean.. I'd like it better if they said "stop being homophobes" and left it.. but that'd be bad for business lol...

I'm sure someone, somewhere out there would take it to heart. Like when you tell someone to quit smoking.

A lot more would take MS to court for calling them homophobic, lol.

Your friend, or maybe you (really?), is an idiot and got what they deserved. Like Chas said, there is no place for this over Live. Straight or gay, leave it where it belongs, in private. I understand that's to much for a lot of gays (fake gays or only on vacation for a few years) to handle though. Despite havin' many gay friends and the majority of the Gay community bein' decent people who don't feel the urge to shout it; in spirit of this thread's title I say: The Gay Community Fails. See what I did there, Kotakuholic?

I bet his name got reported because he was bein' a dooshbag. Probably had nothin' to do with the fact the name is against the rules to begin with. Kotaku must be starvin' for hits.

Like strid said, leave it in private. Just like you said you dont like when people talk about how they are gonna go bang there GF, i really would rather not know if youre gay or not. Its not because I'm homophobic, i dont like hearing about banging gfs either, its just that your personal life doesnt belong on xbox live.

One... Kutaku is one of the worste sites ever... I believe half the time they just make this BS up in house.

Two... You wouldnt notice the PS3 community behavior because they still dont have mics and even if the Wii community had mics they still could not talk;; (Please i dont want to hear your comments about how many people you think have mics on PSN... Truth is you are just being another kutaku if you bring up any type of number... FACT: System comes with no headset.)

Three... Live is not bad at all when it comes to the community. If you play a game like Lost Planet or any of the smaller market online games the community is great because they are just dedicated to being good at that game and making friends. If you were to play the hottest game at the moment like a COD4 or Halo3 then sure it brings out the jackasses... Alot of those jackasses are people just into the release of a hot new game, i guess you could call them floaters. This one is going to shock ya Ele... Most of those people who are asses online... Are asses in real life! I know it is tough to accept...

Seiously tho ask someone who plays a smaller market online game how great the community is...
