From undisclosed sources. July 14th, 2008. XB360 Pro Unit will drop $50 to the new, very pretty price point of $300.

Xbox price cut

In more weekend rumor news, Ars Technica reported on Friday that the 360 would see price drops this September; bringing the Arcade (bare-bones/no hard drive) to a paltry $199, the 60GB PRO to $299, and the 120GB Elite to $399.

These rumors were later backed up on Saturday when VGChartz.com posted the above image which shows the details of the Xbox Arcade SKU. Notice the current price of $279.99 and the “Next Promo Price” for 9/7/08 being set at $199.99.

This story should still be taken with a grain of salt, but an $80 price drop could vastly change the shape of the battlefield for this console generation.

Promotional prices are one thing. Technically all that indicates is a sale. More telling would be if the 199.99 were next to the Next Perm Price entry, which it ain't.

But you also have to take into account that the price drop coencides with their introduction of the Jasper chipset. The cost of production was lowered by $50.00. Either way, it still cheaper than a PS3.

Aye, and there's little doubt you can expect console prices to keep dropping as Sony and Microsoft scrabble at each other's throats over the next year, lol.
