Say we've got 3 people across 2 locations, and 2 XBL Gold accounts.

House1: Bob
House2: Tony + Sally

Bob & Tony have XBL Gold. They play Halo3 together. Can Sally join in their game with just a Silver account, and splitscreen with Tony? Or does Sally need Gold so that she can game with Bob?

Sally would only need Gold if she wanted to play on her own console when she wasn't able to go to her friends' house. If she's at one of her two friends house, she can play split screen with them. However, not that it really matters, if they all want to play together without Gold accounts and using split screen, they can't join ranked playlists.

Your called Bob?

they can play with each other on the same box split screened using tonys account and having sally sign in as a guest to tonys account, you cannot join ranked matches this way, if sally wants to play on her own box at the same time as tony and bob she would need an xbox live gold account.
also as a guest sally does not have voice chat capabilities.

Cool, thanks. Yeah I might be Bob. I wish my Sally was a gamer but alas she was born with other interests; complaining, whining, anger problems, etc.

Case 1: Sally can play with Bob & Tony as a guest. In the example of Halo 3, Sally cannot use her own profile, and if Tony's profile is HiI'mTony, she'd appear as HiI'mTony(1).

This allows all three people to play in Social playlists, that allow guests.
(In fact, one Gold member can sign in up to 3 others on the same xbox for a four-man team over social matches on Live ^^b)

Case 2: Sally can get a Gold Account anndddd play on the same box as Tony. She can now use her own profile, has chat rights, and can track stats/play over live. Sally & Tony can play together in Ranked matches (with Bob if they wish) in playlists that have a max party size that is greater than one, i.e. Team Slayers. They cannot play together in ranked matches that are solo, like Lone Wolves (due to its max party size of one :D ).

Case 3: Make the biatch get her own damn TV and stop clogging up yours for splitscreen. That would obviously require another Xbox and her own Gold account on that box.

Did that help at all Cmdr?

You're welcome.
