XBOX 360

Looks good. The stream video from your PC thing is a really cool touch.

"By being first to market in the next generation, Microsoft hopes to reverse its market position with Sony and take a leadership role in the industry."

For some reason, I'm a little skeptical of this tactic to get first.

Sony did it with the PS2. Despite both the Cube and the Xbox being better systems graphically/etc, Sony had a year lead and something like 100-150 games already out there + backwards compatibility.

The one thing MS isn't say is if it will be backwards compatible to old games.

Probably due to the new graphics chip. If it's not backwards compatible, that's gonna be a huge strike against it.

I think it was more about the Metal Gear Solids, Final Fantasies and Grand Theft Autos, combined with the popularity of the PS1 rather than the year head-start.

I don’t know if this is correct, but my understand of the XBOX is that the games are written on top of the DirectX API, so changing the graphics chipset shouldn’t matter, but knowing Microsoft they won’t make it backwards compatible so they can resell there best selling games in XBOX 360 format (i.e. re-release Halo and Halo 2 and force you to buy new versions).

All of those titles came out about a year after the PS2 launch. It pretty much launched with no killer apps (MAYBE Madden) and still sold out EVERYWHERE. I think they had something like a 2 million installed user base before Xbox or GC began shipping.

EDIT: I'm not sure exactly how graphics processors work, but if the game or system sends instructions or calls directly to the graphics processor, a new one would interpret it differently, unless those instructions were emulated and translated in the 360 for the new one.

It was the many companies Sony had developing games for their system. People bought the playstation because it had great games with great stories/gameplay etc.

Nowadays, people are so entrenched in "omg...omg...the graphics..they're so nice, so lifelike," that it's pretty much look first, play second.

So many people jumped onto the PS because of FFVII. They saw the commercial, which basically showed the FMVs, and then decided to buy the game and PS. No idea what FF was though... I don't know. I'm just rambling. Graphics are good...storyline is better.

In relation to Xbox, I do have had all 3 systems and I gave up my ps2 so I could get an xbox. Although the xbox is much prettier than some of the outdated PS2 graphics, I just don't enjoy the games as much on the Xbox. I've played a lot of games on the Xbox too. I think the game I can continuously play is Crimson SKies and SSX3...which is on the other systems. I miss my PS2 because I could spend hours and hours playing games on it. I still haven't played Metal Gear Solid 3 and am basically hoping Konami is nice enough to release it on Xbox.

Basically DirectX gives a programmer a common interface to the graphics card (driver). So rather than write an instruction directly to a video chipset that may not work on all chipsets you send that command to DirectX. DirectX then handles calling the correct command on the video card (driver). If the video card doesn’t support it, it will attempt to emulate it though software. OpenGL is the same thing, but an open standard.

I'll buy the Revolution and all three games for it and be perfectly happy.

whoops, wrong thread
