I need help so I can play FFXI. My PC is dead and im getting this Xbox360 MTU error.

Error : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908882/en-us?sd=xbox

More info: http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/support/xbox360/live/connect/troubleshoot-mtu.htm

I called microsoft and just got a voice automated person try to help me out but nothing worked. I thought my internet was messed up and had Time warner come out yesterday to look at it but they didnt do anything. The technician told my girlfriend that he can't check to see whats wrong without a computer and that we should have had one ready. BS. I have reset the modem over and over and have directly plugged the 360 to the modem and im still getting this error. Im just about to give up. If anyone has any ideas please reply.

I had the same kind of thing happen to me when I first got my 360, DNS errors and MTU errors, try setting up your 360 connection through a router, that worked for me :)

I tried this and it still wasnt working right. I used a linksys router that has worked before. Thanks anyway.

any other suggestions?

Your current router does not support the amount of MTU the 360 requires. There is a minimum number of MTU. I'm not -exactly- certain of what MTU is, although it has to do with routers.

I had this problem as well, which I ended up having to a buy a new router for. Works fine now.

When I get home I can find out exactly what MTU is for, all I know of right now is that the "Connection Test" does a scan for it. This is where my system would hang up as well.

If you have a friend who recently bought a router, maybe try his. If all else fails, buy a new one. If that fails, well...Take the router back for a refund.

Make sure your box is set to automatically detect IP Address and DNS, when in doubt reset to factory defaults. Then Reset your Modem 1 more time

Test the connection on your xbox. After this is done and the MTU fails, view the info on it. It should give you a number for the minimum MTU for xbox live. Should be something like 1300-1400. Once you have that number, call your ISP's tech support and ask what there system runs on. If their tech support has any clue they should be able to get it for you without a problem. Personally I used Time Warner before, had the RoadRunner service, and no problems.

If their systems MTU is lower than the minimum you're obviously screwed
If their systems MTU is greater than the minimum you have a chance.

Now, I'm assuming you have a 3MB or greater connection speed with a cable modem. So I will take a guess that they will be at least 100 points above the min. requirement MTU.

If all that is good to go, then you get in to the ugliness. There are a few possibilities of things that could be wrong depending on what you live in (house, apt, dorm) and the age of that place.

1. Loose connections.
2. If you have multiple cable outlets in your place there is a good possibility at least 1 splitter was used.
3. Older coaxial cable can be a factor in not being able to connect.
4. Bad modem... still able to run a computer but not good enough for the xbox.

If the MTU number you get from them is good then they will probably need to have a tech come out and inspect the lines. Every cable tech that I have dealt with have had a small machine that connects to you cable outlet. This machine is like a voltage tester, but for cable. It tells them what the connection is at and there is an optimal range for this to run at. If it is out of the optimal range then that can also cause problems for you.

The problems I listed above have at some point in time been a pain in my backside, so good luck and i'll check back later.

Also if you go Xbox.com there is a list of router numbers that will work. Check there to make sure your router is on the list.

Thanks for clearing that up, Shmedly.^^

Np Dowzer :)

Any luck getting online Burne?

No, I am just going to have to wait til I can get my computer fixed. I tried most of what you said but when I called Time Warner the first time they had no idea what MTU was when I explained it to them. I pretty much kept getting that everything is fine or that its my router. If it messed up w/o the router in the first place then how could that be? I will keep trying this weekend.

MTU = Maximum Transmission(?) Unit

Basically, maximum size of the payload (data) in your packets. Most layer-3 devices (such as your router) support an MTU of 1518, and most layer-5 and up protocols/devices (such as Internet Explorer and your Xbox) use 800-1400.

Definitely sounds like a hardware problem with your router. Replace it or directly connect your DSL/Cable modem to your computer/Xbox.

edit: Could be an issue with the software on the router too, but things like MTU don't change automatically. It would have to have been changed manually, and on many consumer-grade routers isn't even a changeable option. So it's more likely a problem with the frame buffer on your router.

I understand that. I am just confused that if it is an MTU error then how could it be the router if I don't use it. Maybe there is something wrong with the modem.

Edit: Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

Another thing that might have happend is. IF your router is wireless without no incryption some one could have loged on to it and screw up wjth your setting to fuck with you.

Doh, sorry. Didn't read the OP my second time through:

Have you asked them to test your MTU, or see what it's currently set at? if they can't answer that then you may need to ask them to escalate it to the tier-2 techs who are a little less braindead.

There are ways to limit your MTU in Windows via reg-hacking the IP stack settings, but I don't think this can be done on the Xbox.

Ok, ill try that when I get home tonight.

Router's not the problem.

1. Is your 360 modified?
2. What version of the firmware are you currently running?

I figured out what happened and it was Time warner. I called them and explained what was going on and finally got some help. Supposedly the same virus that killed my computer tried to go after Time warner so they blocked my connection. It sucks that it took a week for them to finally tell me this after about 6 calls. The last guy helped me out alot though and was telling me how he used to play FFXI and now plays WoW. Very weird.

Thanks again for all the help.

Edit: no its not modified. It should be up to date on the firmware.
