I've considered using a sword instead of a GS in a party, but haven't tried it out yet. I have pretty good accuracy so I really don't think the DOT of the sword would be greater than the GS.
Try drk/nin dual wielding axes at 56 (Rampage) or swords at 62 (Vorpal Blade) - those will give you a rough idea of how the DoT of 1h weapons compares to the slow-but-heavy swings of 2h weapons. I'm not 100% sure that drk gets Vorpal Blade but I'd guess yes since you can equip the heavier bastard-class swords.

I noticed Drg wasn't mentioned much. Every job has a role in a party, what is theirs?
Drg kick ass for DoT, and though I can't speak from experience I'd say they are probably close to mnk once you count wyvern dmg. At 60+ with their AF helm, drg can act as main healer in an exp party.

My vote for top DD excluding war (bias) would be drk/thf or drk/war 66+. Per-swing they are a bit below war/nin DW axes, but their SC dmg knocks them several notches above war. I can't vote mnk since I haven't partied with them enough at these levels.

i say the best job 40-60 was warrior from what i say and played. good at SC and did massive damage with rampage 55+ and then they also get light s/c with mistral axe later.

as to thf not being a damage dealer, 33+ viper bite is insane damage. and once you hit 60 you can hit sneak attack on pull have it be around 15 seconds once you get back, hit the mob with SA, then TA, then that 15sec is gone and SA WS for the s/c works very well. end game PTs i had on THF vs. weapons in sky i did almost near 1k shark bites every time before i quit. and i only used WS with TA. at the start of the battle i always did SA for a good 300-500 damage and then TA WS for light s/c and the things dead in 30 seconds but again that just me and i suck :(

drg well they got it pretty tough durring these lvls

How exactly?
40-50 Drg basically own, anyone who's actually been in a pt with a drg with good equipment will tell you this if they're not bigoted.

If you didn't party with a drg during this level range OR if you only partied with a drg who thought that his rabbit mantle had too much sentimental value to give up, then your opinion isn't relevant. What you've heard doesn't = fact.

I partied with every other melee class in that level range, mnks were as good as anyone else, wars were as good as anyone else, sams were, drk's were, just about everyone was. You can't read anything into these levels, no job has anything truley spectacular yet to distinguish itself.

If anything when I hit level 49 I got penta thrust, pting in garlaige at the time meant bats would fill gaps in the beetle chains, a 5-600 penta thrust on bats at level 49 isn't shabby.
Before it's said, penta thrust is a bad choice WS for an xp party UNLESS you're not doing an SC (no blm to mb= solo 500 ws>200 ws +100 distortion) or the mob checks low evasion to you.

As for the beetles, I hit just as hard as anyone else, I got, and I still get, insane TP from jumps and a 492 delay weapon and when a beetle buffs up no melee job does well against it, fact.

I almost never missed mobs that weren't too high for me (eg: being invited to a 45 pt when I was 42 was a low point.)

50-60 I went to KRT for bats, I went to Kuftal for crabs and then terrigan for more crabs and boyada for.......crabs.

Needless to say bats were dropping fast, invite a ranger or a drg to your next bird pt in lufaise meadows and see what this is all about.
Crabs were the same for everyone, I had an awesome pt from 53-55 in kuftal tunnel chainning the shit out of these, I had my parser running during the pt, there were two melee slots for the pt, War and Drg(me....duh).
To start with we were both pretty even for the first level or so, then when we leveled up I got a large spike in damage as they fell to VT and her dmg increased slightly, for that level I doubled her dmg on some crabs (including wyvern). level 55 came round and she got rampage which went more along the lines of evening things out than unbalancing them.
Without the wyvern however she would have pulled away.

Terrigan was the same deal, ended up roughly even honours with all the Drk's, War's and Sam's, didn't pt with mnks in the 50-60 level range too much, maybe once and I've always thought that mnk's are great, but it's a tight call between them and war, and it was a tight call between me and everyone I pt'd with.

Now obviously you come across some people who have godly gear from time to time and that's when comparisons become difficult, I was blown away by the most pimped out War/nin imaginable in a 50 min session in gustav tunnel.

This guy had PCC, scorp harness+1 @ 57 which he switched to a Haub+1 @58, 2 X marksman rings/STR+4 rings, enky's bracelet's, assault earring, and everything else you would drool over. Besides him I've always been close to other melee.

I firmly belive that SE aren't always the idiots we lovingly regard them as. This isn't a simple game to design and run. Most crafters now hold to strict belief's about which direction to face when crafting, what time of the month to do it, and what day of the week.
If SE can create a game so complex to run so smoothly, then it's not a big stretch of the imagination to believe that when the created the melee jobs in this game, they made them far more balanced over the duration of a pt than most people claim.

To be 100% honest taking players with an equal amount of skill, similar quality gear setups playing different melee jobs fighting mobs that no one is + or - against will most of the time end up with them tied for dmg output by the end of the fight, or FA in the difference.

I know what my role in a PT is, even if you're just taking a cheap shot for some laughs allow me to enlighten you:

I get TP really fuckin fast. Faster than you, I'll double your Tp gain and I'll put gil on it.
I do consistent dmg with a medium to long delay weapon, I do regular hits for less than a drk and more than a sam and I'm in between them for speed.
I open Distorion 1-65 and @65 I open light.
I'm more accurate than other melee wearing similar quality gear (eg: acc rings, acc neck, assault earring, etc)
I have a wyvern who hit's for roughly 20% of what I hit for, If you could buy a piece of gear with +20% dmg on it, you'd want it.
FYI it's not impossible to keep your wyvern alive while fighting AoE mobs but it is a pain, thankfully crabs aren't AoE.
I can dump any hate I have whenever i want. Throw me together with a thf and your hate control is phenomenol.
And I'm a nice guy who's not an uptight jerkoff when you're in a pt with me, which to me is far more important than the asshole {insert x job here} who did 200 more on their ws than me.

200 damage......pfft, I've already used two jumps this fight, there you go, 200-300 dmg wrapped up all nice and neat for you.

So there's a perspective from a Drg on this thread at last, the most under represented job in this debate so far.

If you guys want to take me up on anything in this post that you think is BS, feel free, I'll argue it. I play it straight, I don't feel I have to bullshit, I've proved it time and again, and I'll continue to prove it.

To sum it up there isn't a single melee job I don't enjoy pting with, I especially love drk's and thf's I always SC well with them and 90% of them seem to be fun people, mnk's are pretty hardcore, best dmg I've ever seen was from a war and good sam's can throw out SC's with multiple people while doing consistently good dmg, but don't doubt for a second that I contributed a large amount to these PT's by opening SC's jumping away SATA hate, being accurate and having a 7th member at my side.

And ya, I'm really fuckin proud of my job, no one has ever shown me anything to change that, and I doubt they could.

This post has gone on long enough at this point, end.

great post Waylander^^

drg is a finesse job, there's not a lot of room for that in people's minds

plus it's fun to play, i'd have taken it to 75 if i had the patience

Sometimes the abilities a job brings to the table help bolster its overall value to a party, drawing parallels of value to jobs that outdamage it.

Every job has pluses and minuses. MOBs that it is particularly good at dealing with , and situations that clearly don't display the benefits of that job.

People mention how much damage they do on certain MOBs at certain levels, which is well and good, but proves nothing. To illustrate: On Crawlers at 40-42 I was doing over 600 damage. On bats, at 51-52 in KRT, I did well over 800 damage. Big whoop. At no point did I see other jobs rivaling that damage. Close, but no cigar.

Let's say I am fighting crabs though, and my normal melee hits aren't as strong as other jobs. Well things start to even out.

Player skill being equal, I think parses don't mean as much as what abilities the job brings to the table. The value of that depends on what you are fighting, and what the rest of the party setup looks like.
Too many scenarios to say one job takes the cake.

I'm not gonna disagree, but I am going to ask - what job(s) are you referring to? I'm guessing you can pull 10-15% TP from each jump, but with the delays between those abilites I couldn't see a drg doubling the TP gain of a properly geared nin, thf, or mnk.

Rumour spreadin’ a-’round in that texas town
’bout that shack outside la grange
And you know what I’m talkin’ about.

Yeah, doubling TP gain is really hard to believe, for any job.

I'm not ignorant dumb ass.Go do some research.Str is one of the most if not the most important stats in end game.Food and shit caps your accuracy anyway and who says dex = accuracy?.Races at 75 have a huge difference in str which can cost you up to millions to bring it to equal.ANd war/nin doesn't even need dex much cuz once u duel wield a disector and a radiator along with byakko haidate you'll get your ass kicked unless the pld has loads of enmity.

I believe that was Square-Enix.

Retributor. Although I'd freakin love it if I could offhand a radiator, particularly one from an 58 Thunderbird.

Regular swings:
"Cmdrfly hits the Insertnamehere Crab for 98 points of damage."
"Cmdrfly freakin' whallops the Insertnamehere Crab for... 1684 points of damage? Server, did you see that shit? This bitch is loco!"

No my son.Dex is hardly even equal to one accuracy. It only helps caps accuracy from what i hear or increases the curve. But after sushi + Adaman Hauberk (Its the armor set with the most dex str accuracy and attack combined) you are hitting like a ton of bricks with awesome accuracy per piece. Thanks to Enix they release byakko haidate which has 15 dex and pretty much caps it.On the other hand str is not available 15 per slot and is even harder than accuracy to acquire.I doubt there is a headpiece with like 10 str and 10 evasion out there unlike Optical Hat.

Monk can pimp out up to 6 percent crit rate with Destroyers? (I think those are the knuckles not sure) but duel wielders like war and drk can use Dissector with 6 percent crit and That axe with 6 percent criticle which brings the total crit on weps alone to 12 percent. Now your normal crit rate stacks with it also so it won't be a suprise if some of those hits in rampage are crits. So its pretty much a tie between drk and war.Now it depends who has a better rating in duel wielded weapons and Which food they are eating. Some of the pieces out there have haste on em but they are no where as good as the haste spell considering you have to sacrifice accuracy and other stats for it.

Well heca got some str on head but if i'm not wrong it comes with some juicy slow on it.

yeah i guess haste%+ and acc have no bearing on DoT either
it's all STR and crit%+
actually monk/war STR > war/nin STR due to having access to MNK-only STR+ gear
but i guess you knew that

The going ratio is 2 dex = 1 acc, oh and don't forget, Square-Enix even said it themselves, but I guess you know more about the mechanics of the game than the company that made it.

About the rest, apparently you couldn't read the part where I said that I've parsed above other jobs and races. Sneakypants is right about different jobs doing better on different jobs, but I've parsed above other jobs on every mob that I've fought for exp since I started parsing my parties, which was around 45 or so.

Oh, and apparently you missed the whole point of the topic, which is from 40-60.

Yeah, I forgot about that. Every DD in the game would give anything to have something like a Black or even a Brown Belt.
