lvl 30+ leave the tanking to tank jobs


although i've had an ocasion in boyahda killing crabs and the drk had to tank cuz the ninja couldn't hold hate even if i offered a kraken as a reward...the drk did really well and we still chained 5 ITs...

In this situation I would have had the mnk tank first, then the drk. But as the pt leader its zeven's provacative. People who sit and lfg all the time dont realize the amount of time a pt leader wastes putting a pt together. sometimes it takes up to two hours to put a decent pt together, and if you're one of those people who just lfgs then waits for a almost full pt to invite you then you really need to comply to what the pt leader plans for the pt.

If the pt fails oh well, maybe that will teach you to stop being lazy and form your own parties next time.

Also, joining a pt for 300 xp and then leaving is just BS. I dont know if this was true or not, but I can tell you this, do that to me and you'd join my blist for sure. I understand if there's an emergency or something, but if someone joined my pt then after we get started says "I'm leaving when i level" and they level in less then 1k xp thats just plain rude. And if they dont say anything at all, and lvl within 1k xp and then say "I'm sleepy goodbye" then its blist time as well.

want to lvl for just 300 or so xp? lvl a bst. dont wast other people's time.

I agree with that whole heartedly. A Drk's defense is not really that low pre-30 except when using last resort THEN the def takes a hit. Is a Drk your ideal tank pre-30? no of course not. Will it suffice if your in a hurry to get exp? Sure it will.
 
DRK can tank if they truely know what they are doing. I tanked as drk in CN in the late 50s back when it was still good to pt there off of crawler hunters and knight crawlers. Just ask Firestreak him and I pted together there and when we couldnt find a tank he asked me too. Do drks have bad defense, yes but they are a fessible tank if they know what they need to do to tank.
 
Yeah I thought you did pretty well Marick, tank, DDer and skillchainer. DRKs can wear the same level of defense anyway at least until full AF levels. Mandies for a DRK should be no problem, in fact it'll be nice considering them in place of a tank will mean faster killing for a monster which already should mean no downtime.
It kind of makes you wonder about all those coward WARs who refuse to tank even.

Oi! Half the time the PT considers us as one of the other tanking jobs and doesn't do anything different to help us out.

Honestly tanking as WAR/NIN sucks when the WHM doesn't cast haste on you.
 
Some of you guys I think are to young (in game years) to remember one cool thing about a small JP ls that use to camp HNM's and stuff back in the day (even I was to young to camp but looking forward to killing these I often watched :). I can't remember the shell name but they were a small group of respectable nice players with one oddity. ALL of their tanks where DRK's. They didn't have one PLD or NIN in the whole LS which was comprised of maybe 8-9 people. So I've seen a DRK tank pretty much all of the HNM's aside from the kings though I have saw a DRK tank Adamantoise on video (no, not the Kraken Club clip). Also I remember quite a few mid lv 50 PT's with a DRK tank lvling my RNG. They can tank if they know what they are doing and have the gear like stated earlier by others.
 
Ill retract my statement. Drks cant tank well. In the mid 20's, the only thing a Drk has to hold hate is provoke. At least the Mnk has Boost. Sure a Drk/War can take a few hits, they just have absolutely nothing to help keep hate. Hell, list the melee in order of tanks and tell me where they fall. For me it's:

Pld - Nin
War
Sam
Mnk
Drg
Thf
Drk
 
All the WAR has to hold hate is provoke.

DRK has provoke and weapon bash for emergency. Plus more damage. Boost is nice and all, but MNKs also bleed away hate by taking more damage with their low defense. Drks also have less often, more powerful hits - resulting in hate spikes as opposed to MNK who by spreading their damage thinly among many hits lower their hate levels. This leads often to the incorrect assumption that MNK is a less powerful DD as they steal hate less often.

Though I admit WAR gets boost from MNK sub for hate control(though usually they sub Nin to blink away hits). And at 35 they get Warcry... which is great.

But I think a more accurate list, in my opinion would be...

Pld - Nin - War (all great in their own way)
Sam
Drk
Mnk
Drg
Thf
 
I've tanked in the alte 20s in the jungle as drk/war without problem if the target was mandies. gobs, forget about it, you need a real tank for them, but mandies, np. Infact it was helpful somewhat because you could fit more DDs in the group without muhc negatives. Post 30, heck no, leave tanking to tanking jobs, with few exceptions.

Pre 30 you can be pretty flexibale so long as you have good gear.
 
The thing is if a drk tanks they basically lose all thier job abilities. For instance a Drk/war post 30 tanking cant use berserk, last resort, or souleater. Losing all those ablilities in an exp pt seems to me you are losing way too many abilities. Now in a pinch sure a drk can tank. For instance several levels ago I was in the crawlers nest. Out tank had to leave and we had somone 1K tnl. I ended up tanking for that short amount of time with a 5 person party. Yes it is possible. But I ask myself would I ever go into a party post 30 knowing I would be a tank? No I wouldnt.

But hey maybe thats just me...

I've tanked with my Drk before, but it sucks. I just did it because there was nobody else that *could*.

And on a couple occasions because I took less damage tanking than the War that was supposed to be doing the job. >.>
