I must say, I've gotten a lot more than I expected to. Also done a bit of buying/selling/trading to arrange the set I want the most. Kept pretty good tabs on what's coming and what's out, so pretty much have all I want, save for..

Terminator 3, die hard 3, close encounters of the 3rd kind. (3 movies of 3 hmmm) and the twilight zone movie.

Also a few movies I'm trying to trade away, corpse bride, talledega nights, dracula and crank...

but of my collection... it's pretty massive.

Superman 2
Superman Returns
Simpsons movie
Legends of Jazz
Planet Earth(BBC version)

feeling pretty good about my collection, in that it's not just that there's a good share of movies, but a nice mixture of very different kinds of movies, and they're all movies I like and considered pretty good movies.

If I had to pick, at the moment I'd say my top 10 are..

The Departed
Dawn of the Dead(original version)
The Prestige
Die Hard 1
Terminator 2
goodfellas
evil dead 2
spiderman 2
casino royale
ratatouille

Looking at this list I'm feeling good at blu-ray camp. I'm missing out on the matrix, which should get released soon now that profile 1.1 is out, and batman begins, which I really want in high def. really want army of darkness, anchorman and serenity too. I'd want Star Trek TOS as well except that the price is ridiculous so I wouldn't get it at that on blu-ray anyway.

When you consider that of my collection, I think about 25 of those are blu exclusive and of the 7 hd dvd exclusive I want, 4 are warners on their way, I can feel it's pretty healthy as a format. I must say though, Serenity is so good, I'm counting the days until it's released on blu in some obscure country so I can import it.

I have a pretty large collection by now also. I just purchased an HDDVD player for my brother for christmas and i have to say i wanted to keep it. There are alot of movies on either side of the HD fence i like;; HDDVD has a large amount of movies i am attracted to and i would say if it were not for PS3 i would have purchased a HDDVD player for myself instead. I am in no way unsatisfied with my BRay collection tho, i love em.

Well I like Universal so it sucks missing out, Paramount is kinda blah. I got Sleepy Hollow which I enjoyed from Paramount, and I picked up the Mission Impossible trilogy though I was split on it and then since Paramount stopped making the Blu version I decided to get it while I could.

I'm hoping if Warner goes blu exclusive, it'll force Universal to go neutral. Paramount is under contract for another 11 months or something.

The prestige is the only one that really matters, and maybe DH4...

I HATE the fact that the blue-ray / HD-DVD battle hasn't been decided yet. I want to get a player and a few movies that would look good in high resolution (like Serenity and The Matrix) but I dont want to buy the next beta max.

There are players that do both.

Yeah, but they cost as much as just buying one of each.

Honestly, I can't imagine buying 40+ HD movies at this point. Right now I only have 4 with my 5 free ones on the way, and 2 of those 4 came free with the player. Most movies really aren't worth the extra 10-15 dollar price tag, especially not the older movies that are hardly going to gain anything by slapping them on a HD disc. I'm just going to buy a few big titles that I'll really enjoy in HD, the rest I'll just upscale because the HD won't really do as much.

But, so far all I have is:

300
The Bourne Identity
Transformers
Harry Potter 5
TMNT
The Italian Job
Pitch Black
Troy
U2 in Concert

The next HD movie I'll buy will be Serenity, but after that there's not a whole lot that interests me enough for the price.

I bought an LGBH100 BlueRay/HD player for $700. I stopped playing BlueRay on my PS3 'because I am a firm believer in systems having a built in lifespan, and wasting that time on movies isn't what I want to do.

Yeah, they're down to $700 now, but you can get a blu-ray player for $400 and an HD-DVD player for $300, so you're paying the same for both in a single unit.

I guess I am willing to spend more money for my entertainment than others lol I <3 Movies and Games.

And you're completely missing what I'm saying. The high price isn't any higher nor is it any lower; you're spending the exact same amount on a unit that plays both formats as two units that play each format. The only benefits are that it's a lighter load to carry to your car and one less cable to plug in; that's it.

No, I get what you are saying. What I am saying is that I am willing to buy both players for my enjoyment, rather than waiting to pick one over the other. Hence the "willing to spend more".

I can't say I agree about "older movies". I just watched the Blu-ray copy of Blade Runner and am pretty happy about the picture quality, and that's 25 years old. It's the newer titles actually that get less of a boost, because dvds are down to a science for studios now and lots of them look good upscaled. For example Serenity looks great as a DVD upscaled. Then pop in an older title... Army of Darkness. Looks like shit. I'd like to have it as a high def release.

As for standalones... I have to say I'm supremely confident in the PS3's ability to act as a movie player and game system if properly cared for. If anything, if it requires replacement down the line 4 years later, by that time it'll be cheaper to buy a new PS3 then it is for a standalone now.

As for dual format players, I'd say, unless you're doing Lanien's solution, of the standalone blu-ray player to avoid overusing the PS3, then it's best to just get a standalone HD DVD and a PS3. If you're a gamer and looking for a blu-ray player, it's a no brainer you want the PS3. Even if you're not, it's probably the best deal with all the media capabilities in the box. As for HD DVD, I believe for $300 you can get a 1080P or $200 for a 1080i, I'd go with the 1080P but I'd wait to see what happens with Warner.

Basically the way that the studio support is split...

If Warner were to go HD DVD, then there's a 50/50 split, with Disney, Fox, Sony vs Warner, Universal, Paramount. In terms of their box office yearlies, it's around even there too. If that happens, might as well pick up an HD DVD because neither format is winning for a long time. Warner is also a really important studio, and makes up a pretty big chunk of my collection and has a lot of great catalogs. Paramount is easy to forget, Universal is tough, Warner is impossible.

If Warner goes Blu-ray, then it's game over, don't bother with an HD DVD player. Universal will follow neutral and Paramount will come back when their contract ends.

Warner claims they're deciding based on sales, if that's the truth, it'll be blu-ray. Microsoft tried to buy them out earlier and they rejected the offer. It's entirely possible that the pounding sales-wise that HD DVD is getting this quarter could be the justification, but maybe Warner just takes the numbers and demands more money from MS.

We'll see. At any rate, you can buy a Blu-ray player with confidence. Sony, Fox and Disney aren't going anywhere and with them and the PS3, no matter what happens, Blu-ray will be around for a long time. Especially considering that outside of the US, HD DVD isn't even a contender.

No, you still don't. At no point in this thread did I ever indicate to only buy one, I only said that you gain no monetary benefit form buying a single player that supports both formats. How you twisted that into me saying to buy one over the other, I have no idea, but I was solely addressing the fact that buying the dual-format unit is no better monetarily than just buying both units. The fact that you're willing to pay the money either way is completely irrelevant.

Did it ever occur to you that I am not talking about you? Did you look at Reeve's post at all? He said he is waiting to choose because he is not sure which will win. I in turn say "I have a player that will do both because I am willing to pay for both to enjoy it all." You come in with your unnecessary bullshit about how it's the same price to buy 2 standalones or 1 single unit. Read the fucking thread again before you try to explain your rhetoric to me because honestly, I don't care whether it is monetarily viable or not because I AM WILLING TO PAY FOR BOTH!

If you weren't talking to me, then you SERIOUSLY fucking fail at quoting. Your first post was a response to Reeve's post, the rest were responses to me. You made a comment to Reeve's post, saying you bought a dual-format player; then I made a comment on your post, then you responded, then it went on from there. Now, you're saying you weren't even responding to me at all, when it was blatantly obvious you were.

So, either one of two things happened. One, you were idiotically replying to my posts without actually replying to what I was saying. Or two, you were replying to Reeve's posts through several of your own over the period of 40 minutes. Either way you're an idiot, but only one of them you're a lying idiot.

Ah, yes. Bajaratt. Defender of the internet. This whole misunderstanding came from you creating context in my post that I did not infer in any way whatsoever. Even more so, not once did I quote you in any of my posts. Sure, the way you interpreted it is feasible, but wrong in the end.

Here is Reeve pointing out he doesn't want to pick one over the other as there isn't a sure winner yet. I reply that there are players that do both. Your response is:

Sure, that is fine and dandy. I say I bought mine for $700. You say you can get a BlueRay/HD player for that price.

Now this is where I say I am willing to spend more for entertainment. This is also where you create the context of what I say to fit into your previous statement, when in fact I was still referring to the fact that I will pay for both players. Everything after that is your misunderstanding of what I said to begin with.

I do applaud your efforts to try to keep this civilized, but in the end you resort to your typical degrading by the use of the word 'idiot'. It's not my fault you like to believe what you want and live in your own false sense of reality. Just remember, not everything is in response to you.
