360 + BluRay?

Still a stupid move at this point because they would be slapping anyone with a 360 in the face by saying "Your system is useless now." Then again, if they go the external route and it just plays movies, that would be even stupider because it would make it too expensive.

I agree with Lanien on this one. Just stupid. If they just make an attachment external drive, why not just get a regular drive, it's virtually the same thing? Plus, where is the deal? I mean a PS3 costs $399 with a Blu ray. The Xbox most popular is $350 WITHOUT. Add a Blu ray, internal or external, there is gonna be a price change, and for the worst.

The PS3 is officially now, the "cheaper" system anyway, especially for what you get for only $50 more.

Considering that Blue-Ray won it probably won't be as massive as a jump in price as you think, there may not even be a price jump at all. By the time this comes out the PS3 will probably have undergoe its next $100 price drop (supposed to be around may or something, i don't remember what the article said) so that means that the 360 most certainly will, so the blue ray will probably just equal out the price.

Or they could just dumb down some other features, like BC and the price will remain the same. This is personally what i think will happen.

So you think they'll actually start making an internal Blu-ray drive? Rumor also is the the 360 will now have a 60gb harddrive replace the 20.

I doubt it will happen. Microsoft wants to push downloadable content, not HDDVD or BluRay. If they do release one it will be an external, not an internal for the same reasons they didn't make an internal HDDVD drive.

Only problem I have with the add ons for systems is, the system itself dosent take advanatge of the positives.

But yeah some external add ons are ok. Like a harddrive.

That article just says Microsoft will support the format, but they're not going to put one into a 360.

Considering that stand alone blu-ray players are still at least $300, they'd be taking a pretty big loss to bundle it into the 360; on top of pissing off the 20 million 360 owners out there who already bought the console.

There's no way in hell they'd be stupid enough to release a 360 with a built-in blu-ray drive. If anything(and even that's kinda doubtful) it's going to be external.

It would only be a slap in the face if they changed their game disc format over to Blu-ray. I highly doubt they'd do something like that. They'd probably catch so much bad flak for that it's unimaginable what would happen. Especially considerin' the new Xbox is in the works. If they do acquire a license to use Blu-ray, I'm still skeptical though, I'd expect it'll be used on their new system.

well, you can look at it this way, if they did make it a blu-ray internal for the 360 that'd make MGS have more of a chance coming to 360 too (since not even Blu-ray is big enough for MGS according to Kojima lol)

Either way Microsoft looks silly. Microsoft knew Blu-Ray was better, yet they push it on their consumers trying to knock down Blu-Ray to try to earn some extra cash. They should have gone with Blu-Ray to ensure the best available quality and value for their consumers, especially for the loyal ones.

The reason why Blu-Ray mashed HD-DVD, is not because of the ignorant consumers, but because of the ones who read, and see for themselves which format was better, and Blu-Ray carried better quality + value. More of everything one would expect from High definition media.

The purchase of HD-DVD players for those consumers is unfortunate. But that does not excuse the fact Microsoft knowingly tried to sell them the inferior media, when Microsoft is suppose to be all about New technology.

Microsoft's mistakes was them focusing too much on the battle and not looking into the best interests of their consumers. They should have gone with Blu-Ray the day they knew the difference between that and HD-DVD. Was Microsoft relying on the masses to be uneducated or too ignorant to spot the difference, and favor HD-DVD ? In truth, if HD-DVD won the format war, it would have been a technological step backwards for our civilization, and Microsoft would've shamefully been a part of it.

If Microsoft goes with Blu-Ray, they should use it for the next XboX console and not the 360. Microsoft already keeps their hand in their consumers pockets, Blu-Ray games on the 360 won't be good business at this point.

There are a few companies that have a license to Blu-Ray and Microsoft is one of them according to Wikipedia. Which Makes sense since Microsoft is way up there in the computer chain, and ultimately digital media is exclusive to computerized hardware.

One thing I never understood, in what way was blu-ray ever actually "superior." The only thing I'd ever heard of is that blu-rays hold more; but since you'd get the exact same movie on the HD-DVD version the extra space was useless. Plus, the HD-DVD's would usually have more features on the discs, like games, internet features, DVD side, etc. Blu-rays had more encryption, but that's completely irrelevant from a consumer standpoint. I guess the coating to protect the blu-rays from scratches could be considered a "superior" feature, but if you DVD's get messed up enough that you have to rely on a coating you don't really fit in the role of an "intelligent" consumer. Even looking at the specs on the formats, they're practically identical; but I'd seen features on HD-DVD's that blu-rays either never included or are only just now starting to include on their discs.

So yeah, as much as I hear that blu-ray is obviously superior from the fanboy camp; I'm really not seeing it, and actually saying HD-DVD would be a step back is just hilariously stupid. Technically HD-DVD offered more value per dollar since the players have always been cheaper than the blu-rays. The reason why blu-ray won was because of the install base created from the PS3 and sony's early preparation with adoption from the movie studios, more than some obscure superiority of the format.

Wikipedia information can go one way or another, unfortunately. It wouldn't surprise me if they eventually use it but this early, I don't know, it'd need to me more creditable information. Not that it really matters. However, I highly doubt we'll see it internally in the 360 or externally unless used for movies -only-.

Which brings it all back to the Mini-Disc, remember that? Or better yet, the Betamax. There was no way of knowin' which would be the champion, especially given the cost factor of Blu-ray, without time and competition. I still don't see the fascination with HD, it's not like it makes the endin' of Titanic a happy one or the last two Matrix flicks worth a damn compared to the first. As far as game discs goes, I don't mind changin' multiple disc, it just simply doesn't phase me one bit. Anyway, there was reason to try and compete, as always, and it's always nice to leave the decision up to the consumers. You win some and you loose some but that's business and they did fine.

As for Blu-rays "superiority", I'm with Baj. I don't see it. HD-DVD, HD Video Download, Blu-ray, they all look the same to me and I can't justify the extra money for absolutely nothing. Hell, I don't even rent HD movies over normal DVD movies. It's not like HD made Titanic's ending happy or got Jason Bourne caught and killed.

Capacity is everything in terms of High definition media. Sure both media utilizes the same file types, but they rely on low compression to deliver high quality picture. MPEG-4 and even more, the AC-3 files on the Blu-Ray can go with even less compression which again delivers better picture.

Also think about Shows released in box sets. Blu-Ray would do it sharper with less discs. HD-DVD, not as good.

But seriously, lets cut the crap, We're talking about hardcore gaming. HD-DVD never even made it there, and it's not possible for it to match Blu-Ray in this field either.

Adding such novelties to DVDs is nothing new or fancy. It was smart for HD-DVD to put on such a song and dance, but lets be realistic here.

Intelligence is besides the point, people want durability. Do you not praise the quality of you're products ?

And you know what ? XboX games should have this coating too, just in case someone accidentally bumps their system while it's on and the Disc is permanently ruined. In the masses, accidents do happen, nothing wrong with looking out for others.

Yes, but remember, for digital quality size does matter. Capacity to handle = Less compression = Better quality. AC-3 files are larger on Blu-Ray.

Oh now we're crying fanboy, which goes to show you choose to remain behind with HD-DVD which is fine. But don't ignore the reasons for it's loss. It's not my fault you bought an HD-DVD player, so lets ease up on the name calling now.

HD-DVD is below Blu-Ray. To think HD-DVD is supreme just because they added silly novelties that can do done on DVD and even CDs for that matter is what now ? Funny ?

You yourself said 95% of HD-DVD movies aren't worth it, but you buy them cause they are now cheaper than before. It would be brighter for you to get the DVD instead. Now you rely on you're HD-DVD player to last a lifetime. If that goes, so do you're HD-DVD movies until you can find a replacement or a repair shop (since HD-DVD hardware is discontinued, getting parts will be expensive.)

Sorry to say, but Blu-Ray looks better than HD-DVD. Much better.

HD-DVD shouldn't even talk to Blu-Ray cause HD-DVD doesn't have any games, and it never will either. But if HD-DVD did, it would be behind from any developers standpoint. But wait, HD-DVD does exist so it is behind.

On the other hand, forget movies, forget support and who backed up what format. ( I won't even mention commercial games cause HD-DVD isn't even there ) Microsoft knew which media was better but they went with what they felt would kill their competition, before thinking about providing the people with the best of the best. I'm sorry but i have a problem with that. And it seems like you do too, cause now HD-DVD is discontinued. Ofcoarse HD-DVD movies will be cheap, but supporting it at this point in time is laughable.

Yeah but Blu-Ray ROM for PC would have no choice but to operate under Windows. I think licensing took it's toll for the company and the technology along that line.

I remember the Mini-Disc, they were nice but not good enough. Betamax was successful for the 7 years it flew as the only VCR to recording TV and watch movies as one would please. Sony was indeed a winner with this, and it never hurt them to join the others in making VHS. The VHS took over BetaMax cause of it's extended control scheme and length of the tapes. VHS got better over the years but the tape never reached the quality of BetaMax.

I don't ignore the fact Microsoft is doing fine. I'm pointing out where they messed up, and why they messed up. As you said yourself, going Blu-Ray now would upset the masses. It's very true.
