360 + BluRay?

As the (mostly retarded) 360 owners have shown already, people will go through multiple 360's to get their gaming needs. Weather or not they support the blue ray player isn't what i'm getting it, but what i am saying as that as alienated as all 360's users will be, they will still probably all clamor to get the new 360. The only alienated people will be the smart 360 owners, but MS has probably already lost enough money to those people, that they won't really care when they don't come back.

Come on now you really think we're gonna see java on a microsoft game console? Cause you know that Blu-ray doesn't use HDi. How about next they drop DirectX and push forward with OpenGL? I think some of you people haven't been paying attention to Microsoft. They are business not innovators. They won't push any technology that doesn't directly benefit them. Just consider how shakey the quicktime support for windows was. Just think of the idea of Microsoft going out of their way to offer a blu-ray, with its java based menu on their xbox? They'd just assume pretend xbox live rentals are better. Everyone wants 2 hour high def movies compressed to 4 gigs.

As someone who works in a videogame store that sells both, i've seen the far end of both the 360 idiots and the far end of the PS3 idiots.

Also, keep in mind i didn't say they were going to add a blue ray. I said that if they weren't going to, it would have nothing to do with alienating a user base that has already show massive dedication to a crappy hardware.

Ok, fuck this shit. I don't even know whats going on anymore.

Microsoft Says No Blu-Ray for X360
60
The comments by Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, poured cold water on recent speculation that Microsoft could support Blu-ray after Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research), backer of the rival HD DVD format, gave up when key movie studios and retailers abandoned the technology.

"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience," Greenberg told Reuters in an interview.

Microsoft, which has stopped making an HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, would continue to invest in its Xbox Live online service that already lets users rent hundreds of movies, including ones in high-definition.

"We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," Greenberg said.

The software giant also expected that supply problems for the Xbox 360 meant the machine was outsold in the U.S. market by Sony's PlayStation 3 console in February for the second month in a row.

"We definitely expect we will trail in February as a result of our supply constraints," Greenberg said, adding: "By April, we will be in a very healthy inventory situation."

That would be in time for the April 29 launch of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc's (TTWO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) "Grand Theft Auto 4" game, which is widely expected to be one of the best-selling titles of 2008 and could drive purchases of the Xbox 360 and PS3

Greenberg spoke a day ahead of the planned release of U.S. video game sales data for February by market research firm NPD, whose monthly reports are pored over by game companies eager for bragging rights.

The PS3 struggled last year due to its high price and lack of must-have games, but sales have picked up in recent months thanks to price cuts in late 2008 and a slate of anticipated upcoming games.

"We still think we have a great value, that we have significantly better value than Sony. Every month we've actually been in stock we've outsold them by a 2 to 1 margin," Greenberg said.

So basically what i get from all this shit is that Microsoft is looking at blu-ray, but basically for PCs only. They originally said they were in talks with sony about it, however now they say they aren't in talks with them, and that there won't be an add on. Either someone at M$ is full of shit, or that techtree article is BS. Either way I'm done with this shit. My guess is there wont be an add on but who the fuck knows. I have my PS3 so really I don't give a fuck either way. And now i'm going to bed.

You're saying they wouldn't alienate at most 25% of their current user base; the idiots who would re-buy an xbox without a second thought. That's probably the same % of people who'd re-buy a playstation product instantly too(there's more xbox owners, but the % is the same), but that's beside the point. You're still leaving over 10 million people pissed off at Microsoft for their decision, who probably wouldn't go re-buy the 360.2 and might swear off the xbox series all together. Yeah, they're totally dumb enough to do that just because a few million people wouldn't care.

If you look at their track record, they aren't known for smart decisions, they are known for making a crap ton of money. I just don't think that they would care if people felt alienated, because they would just end up buying the new 360 anyway.

The thought of the X360 having built in Blu-Ray (or even HD-DVD for the matter) is exciting, and it would allow developers to do so much more.

Because so many X360's are out there already, without much explanation, making the Ultimate X360 and putting it on the market would be yet another disaster, for Microsoft and their consumers. (Only a disaster to the consumers if a daring developer made a must have game on a high capacity disc.)

I can't even say how many people traded in their 360s to upgrade to an elite. Why is it so hard to think that many more people would trade in the xbox they have now to get an upgrade that actually means something?

It's not just the consumer, it's also revolves around company expenses plus how many developers would be willing to take advantage of the new hardware.

- There will always be more 360's out there that run games off of DVD9.

- Ultimate XboX360 suggests it's time to make games off of larger discs, leaving out every 360 owner from the start. It could end up being wasteful cause 3rd party developers would rather cater to every 360 owner as opposed to the few with the UX360 who may not even be interested in the game on the Blu-Ray. Those who own this UX360 wouldn't see too many games that run exclusively on this version of XboX360

- Having such an upgrade will take a lot of time to start to show face. And it would really depend on how many consumers support it.

- If it's just a simple Blu-Ray player for X360, then there is no real need for it on the wide scale.

- Implementing Blu-Ray now would turn a lot of 360's head count towards Sony

- For trade in, it would be in Microsoft's best interest to rebuild and refurbish the rejected 360's. On top of the money loss from each sale of the old 360's, Microsoft would take an extra financial hit cause of the Blu-Ray ROM inside the new system. Plus the labor costs of building new and recycling systems.

- 10 million units would not be pleasing enough for either side. (Consumer and Provider)

- Blu-Ray capability would tarnish the image of that XboX rental channel thing on XBL. (Microsoft's ambition revolves around all games and movies being downloaded content)

- Every online community would raise a stink about Microsoft's taxing way of evolving into something that fails to match the PS3 which would fracture Microsoft's reputation, and dampen 360 sales. (Microsoft is wary of defeating Sony and not Nintendo.)

On a personal note i think Ultimate X360 would produce games with a better over all finish. If anything is left out of a game, it would be for reasons other than running out of disc space. Games would have higher quality textures so that Xenos chip can show off more of what it can do, the games would look much better, and also sound a little better. ( It would sound a lot better for those who have freak sound systems and know how they like their settings)

They don't have to be innovators. Their customers want hi-def capabilities, and when it can be handled at the right cost then MS will do it.

Do you really think a simple language barrier is going to stop MS from squeezing more coins out of their customers? Potentially - whether official or not - more games out of their console? Just because they don't like Java doesn't mean they're going to brick any Xbox that runs it. They're $1.4 billion in debt to the EU because of that monopolistic mentality. I'm not even touching BD with this statement; MS has historically denied programs and languages from working well on their platforms and they got slapped in the face for it. They are learning.

One of two things will happen:
  1. Sony will permit HDi translations with Java to further popularize the format and generate more bucks from royalties. This is probably less likely as it would cut into the PS3 sales.
  2. Microsoft will surrender HDi to a future internal project and adopt BD as it is.
They want to push Vista and they want to push X360. These are Microsoft's biggest platforms targeted for consumers right now. If BD support shows up in Vista, which it damn well will very soon, it'll hit 360 sometime thereafter. The biggest kicker will be the price of an external drive... I doubt MS will offer the drive until it can be sold for a price similar to the HD-DVD addon (which could be a long-ass time looking at today's prices).

$200 is the magic number. No chance of progress until then.

If Microsoft is really going to do this, then it'll defiantly be external. I think it's all a rumor though.

If its possible (i'm not a tech nerd, so i don't know) i would think that they would produce both an external blu-ray and a new xbox with a blue ray tray.

Enough people upgraded to an elite for space that i'm sure 90% of elite owners don't use, why is everyone so hell bent on not believeing that people will upgrade to a new xbox if there is actually a noticeable change made to it that could improve it.

There is a difference though. The original 360 and the elite both play the same disc format, so it was optional to upgrade. That and the fact people thought that the elite would be built better, even though it wasn't. If they put in a bluray drive to the 360 and future games will utilize it, then it would alienate those who can't or won't upgrade. Huge difference there between 360=>Elite and 360/Elite=>Bluray

Well Makelith, Blu-Ray players generate a lot of heat. 360 does also, so going with an internal BDROM might become very problematic. Microsoft does have rights to Blu-ray, but i really couldn't imagine them having BDROMs made for $100 a piece.

Naw theres not difference. They won't ever make games on bluray format this generation, just like they didnt make games in HDDVD. If they put one out itll just be for the player and not to utilize the bigger disc space for games. I mean atleast thats why I think, M$ can be money mongers but they aren't stupid enough to alienate most of there consumer base. The biggest problem with this generation is cost. Why do you think the PS2 still sells like crazy? Its because it only costs 130$. Its not for the games otherwise everyone would have jumped on the 60GB ps3. And if they put in a bluray drive it wont be a cheap console so more than likely most people won't trade up other than the hardcore people.
