Ok!

So I am thinking about getting a 360. I haven't had a console system since the ps2 so I am not -that- out of date. I have a LCD monitor that I use for my PC that I would like to use as my *tv* when I have a 360 hooked to it. Now using something like this:

I know it is possible to use my LCD monitor on my xbox...but heres my question. Does this cable have the ability to connect to my Z 5500's and deliver some sexy sexy 5.1 sound AND run video at the same time?

This is the back of the control pod about 3/4ths the way down the page:

Halp I am such a newb when it comes to this shit :(

Oh as an edit I notice the cable from future shop has the optical connection, so I know that will give me sound but..what are the white and red dongle for?

Red and white are component audio. Most Tvs use that and some lower end audio systems.

It was the standard back in the day when Coaxial finally died, Red White and Yellow was used until High Def and HDMI came out.

Ok cool I believe I use them on my Ps2 allthough I run optical for sound. Now this cable is VGA connection. I have DVI on my LCD/GPU's I have a DVI to VGA converter kicking around....probably use that.. going to go to future shop now and grill some employee who will renew my hatred for the store....

The fat one on the left plugs into the XBoX, the 2nd one is the other side of that cable that goes directly to a VGA port.

Red and White are Audio, you may want to look into splitting those to colaberate with you're sound system. there is that adapter there that will plug into you're sound card.

The Black cable is the other side of the Audo cables. That peice plugs into the Fat cable on the left. If you look at the 1st cable to the left again. You'll see how the cable comes out one side. Next to that is where you plug the black peice.

Very nice cable by the way.

Yea the cable is pretty cool! I just went to run to Future shop on my break from work and realised halfway there while singing tetragrammatron that today is turkey day here in Canada and its closed...Gonna have to go tomorrow and see if I can use a VGA to DVI converter so I can infact run it off my LCD.

Splitting audio is not the best idea if your an audiophile, that is, if you like good sound quality. Using a splitter not only keeps you at 2 channels but putting them on multiple speakers, which wont give you the surround sound effect, but just an all around same sound, it also lowers the sound quality and changes the power due to more resistance.

In short, you will lose quality.

Im just going to run the optical for my sound. It's peerless when it comes to music/movies on my PC. I can only imagine it will do the same justice for my 360.

When i said he "may" want to look into splitting the audio that is pending on his sound system. It may or may not be taking up the targeted ports, which it probably isn't.

The audio is also on seperate channel from the video cables, and it really makes no difference if he choose to plug the Audio cables into a reciever, or into the sound card.

It will, more crunch that way.

I actually just got these a couple of weeks ago myself. Bought a new monitor and speakers. (And a receiver so I could run everything through the two)

They honestly sound really great. I use this monitor which is really handy since it has component, dvi, hdmi, and vga in.
You really will want the HDMI and optical audio. If you're just using the speakers for computer and 360, you won't need anything else but cables, just plug the green/black/orange into the control unit, and same with the optical. If you're wanting to run more things through, you'll end up needing a receiver (since most if not all switches will *not* convert signals).
Should add, the 360 Elite comes with a dongle for audio out. It has red/whites and an optical port.

And yeah, you better get an elite if you get one. Want to slap people who get the original ones.

If you have any questions, lemme know. I just went through a crazy amount of trouble to get everything through my monitor and speakers, and know a decent amount about it.
