A Dumb Meriting Question

k, here's the deal. I'm whm 75, all other jobs are 41 max, mainly because I truly love the job. Someday I may want to level up other jobs such as blm, rdm, nin or ranger ... but I haven't gotten to that point yet.

I've been meriting off and on, and I'm about to be forced to chose to do four merit upgrades in the "other" category or to merit a weapon (almost certainly club). I'm pretty much a traditional backliner as a whm, so meriting club is something I'd prefer to leave to the very end, if I can.

To my mind, the best thing to merit next likely will be negative emnity. The question is, will merited negative emnity affect any of my other jobs that are below 75 if I later decide I want to play them or to level them up? Once I get to 75 on another job (if I ever do), I'll have no problem giving up negative emnity if it's called for. My concern is, for example, would it affect my play while leveling ninja past where it is now (level 40), or even while doing the bcnm40s I currently do as a ninja? If it does, I'll probably find something else to put the merits into - but I'd prefer negative emnity if I can merit that without screwing up my other jobs.

Any input will be most welcome.

And yah... I should know the answer to this, but I don't. My apologies.

Thanks,
Fire

Negative emnity would mean say goodbye to any tank jobs.

the emnity # is percentage based so you fully meriting it means -4% emnity according to the emnit thread on BG.
You can tank still on em but it will be lightly harder.
you need a significant amount of either to see any reults hatewise. Save the emnity merits for last just before club or mnd. This is my theory only. ignore it if somone else with whm 75 gives advice and says it's bad.

I would most def. save emnity for the very last. Its the only thing that has a major effect on other jobs that you would play as negatively.

Yes, your merits play a percentage (sometimes noticeably) toward your jobs even at lower levels, so it would affect you to some degree if you decided to level a tank job. My advice would be to merit what you are most likely to use most often and be most beneficial. If you love whm and you know you'll continue to be on that job the majority of your time, I'd say yes merit your - enmity. If you think a tank job quite possibly could share headlining time, then don't merit enmity at all and depend on certain food choices and gear to provide - or + enmity for you. Either way, if you go with - enmity now and you find yourself wanting to change it later, what's a few more hours meriting?

Makes me happy I've got a melee character and a mage character so I don't have to split my merits.

I would just say stay clear of that horrid enmity quandary all together and go for crits and spell interrupt.

I have leveled a tank job and a mage to 75 and never touched eminty merits despite the help it may have given me either way. There are so many better choices to spend merits on anyway, I'd leave emity untill you are at the point where you honestly have nothing left to do.

This is what I would suggest doing. Crit % is a really nice boost for any melee job and spell interrupt will benefit your WHM and NIN.

And just to clarify, all merits will take effect once you are lvl 10+, besides job specific merits. And those will only affect your job if you are lvl 75.

lots of people I know, respect and trust have replied here - others I don't know as well have too, and you're all saying pretty much the same thing. Don't merit -emn if there's any chance you're going to be tanking/kiting/etc. And since there's the possibility with both nin and rdm ... dayum! Club skills and - crit hits against, here I come!

Seriously, thanks for all the advice. It's appreciated.

All the best,
X

To clarify your clarification, while they'll take effect to *some* extent, you don't get the *full* effect at level 10. Each subsequent upgrade to a given thing kicks in at a higher level.

Upgrade #1: level 10
Upgrade #2: level 20
Upgrade #3: level 30
Upgrade #4: level 40
Upgrade #5: level 50
Upgrade #6: level 55
Upgrade #7: level 60
Upgrade #8: level 65

So for (a probably thoroughly unnecessary) example, if an aspiring BLU has pre-merited MP x8, STR x5, Sword x8, Crit x4, then:

Level 1-9: no benefit.
Level 10-19: +10 MP, +1 STR, +2 Sword skill, +1% crit
Level 20-29: +20 MP, +2 STR, +4 Sword skill, +2% crit
Level 30-39: +30 MP, +3 STR, +6 Sword skill, +3% crit
Level 40-49: +40 MP, +4 STR, +8 Sword skill, +4% crit
Level 50-54: +50 MP, +5 STR, +10 Sword skill, +4% crit
Level 55-59: +60 MP, +5 STR, +12 Sword skill, +4% crit
Level 60-64: +70 MP, +5 STR, +14 Sword skill, +4% crit
Level 65-75: +80 MP, +5 STR, +16 Sword skill, +4% crit

Yea totally forgot to mention that. Thanks for bringing it up.

Exactly. Enmity is one of those things which can have a positive impact on one job while a negative on another so it's best to stay clear of it. Because merits impact other jobs, the choices can effect how well you perform from one to another. As a NIN, that -enm could mean how well you maintain hate and it would best to merit +enm for NIN, but that would also harm WHM as well. The best choice for all jobs to benefit from or at the very least, not be a detriment to another job are spell interruption and +crits (possibly -crits as well). That way you can use spell interruption on WHM and NIN when you are taking hits and +crits on NIN to increase your damage output which will also maintain hate better.

The nice thing about WHM is that it has a huge abundance of -enm readily available in gear from a great set loaded with MND and a decent amount of MP. Plus as an added bonus which really isn't required but very nice to have, haste. Stick with that set (and amazingly, the name eludes me even tho it's basically my full time set). With that said, -enm isn't as needed really for WHM unless you do some longer fights or some HNMs, but in those cases, you should really expand your enmity set to beyond just those three pieces. I've known some players who play many different jobs and because they prefer tank jobs, meritted +enm. They can compensate for the +enm with large amounts of -enm on mage jobs, but the problem with that is if they are ever needed in level caps (which was never in those cases), there isn't a huge amount of -enm gear to use. The reverse is also true as well, there isn't a lot of +enm at lower levels to compensate so again, it's best to just go with neither. Or you could merit +4enm and -4enm.

Blessed gear is the set you're thinking of.

Better leave Enmity unchanged, unless you're certain that you won't level a tank job in the future.

Even as a tank job and only a tank job, I'd leave enmity unchanged. There are many situations where a tank has to *lose* hate, and keeping hate in those situations messes things up for everyone.

The only case for touching enmity merits would be -enmity if you're ONLY going to be a mage/non-THF DD

Merits will be at some notice when you play your other jobs (the lvl41 ones) but if i was you i would save the enmity guys for last

best of luck to you fire
