A good Monk and why you should invite them.

Y'know what's interesting?

Every single crab party I've ever had after 51, I've been the top melee damager (Not counting RNGs and BLMs, of course). Every single time, yet MNKs are 'supposed' to be junk against crabs.

Just something to think about.

ya... just cause a job might not be particularly strong against a certain type of mob does not mean it won't do good damage. why.. with a MNK and DRG in King Ransperre's Tomb.. the MNK AND the DRG were kicking lots of butt ^^ Doumoon was doing good damage and not really missing much and I believe that dragoons are supposed to be "bad" against those types of mobs.. or so I was told

This thread was one of the more intelligent ones I have seen on this forum.
Thanks for starting it Cubswoo.

I am working on my 73 Monk.. and loving everytime I get to play it. I think one of the most challenging elements of this job is to do maximum damage, and not draw hate off the tank.

Xion, ( the main reason for me starting monk job) just want you to know, I miss ya bud...wish you could drop in and say Hi once in a while :(

Monks have the sexiest moves in the game

Dude, monks rule!

When I was in the temple of uglypie, soloing for a testimony, there was a mnk and thf together killing sozu rogberry, I kindly asked if they could help, and to my surprise he responded with a kind gesture and said he would. When he pulled the first pot, i swear, 2 hits and it was half dead, then with asuran fists, it dropped instantly, which at the time really inspired me to do monk, but I just don't have the time to really lvl jobs anymore ><

Sorry, Cubs post was too damn long and I readed it all. I'm not about to read the 3 pages of posts.
But yes, I agree MNKs (like every other class) are as good as the person sitting behind the keyboard. I would rather have a tricked out MNK over that RNG/BRD *cough* Bloodwarrior *cough* MNKs do own when it comes to setting up SATAVB and if you need a backup tank for PLD at the end of a chain MNK does that nicely.

LMAO!!! oh god, that's too good!!

Playing monk right now on mule, it's a lot like that except you get that rush of weaponskills and JA's that I never get with blm.

Bone Parties

For all of you non-Monks out there who are tired of crabs and beetles, there is an alternative. Skeleton or Bone hunting parties. Allakhazam has a sticky on this in the Monk Job Forum.

The basic premise is to get 2-3 Monks and pound the crap out of Skeleton type mob. Tank is optional. You kind of kill mobs so fast it doesn't matter.

65+ there parties become even more effective with Dragon Kick to add Light. Fire and Light is their weakness, so Fusion is way better than Distortion ever was on crabs. And Light after Fusion does 150% damage of what Dragon Kick did.

For example, Helping with G2 one day, on Borreal Hound

Red Lotus Blade > Howling Fist > Dragon Kick
230 > 1285 > 1395
Fusion > Light
751 > 1999

Now if that doesn't wow you, you shouldn't play this game.

Imagine that in an xp party. Every other fight is 20 seconds and death.

And best of all, a 3-monk party can do that chain all by itself:

Spinning Attack -> Howling Fist -> Dragon Kick.

Toss in a BRD, WHM and BLM, and you've got a slaughter party, even moreso if the WHM has Divine skill capped. ^_^

Just to toss in my two gil here, I enjoy having a monk in my parties.
They're toe to toe with me in TP gain, and they can open Distortion with Howling Fist -> Dancing Edge (The skillchain I've been doing for the last few levels).
I also have to admit, I'm jealous of a lot of their abilities. Chakra, Focus, Boost, etc.
And who doesn't love seeing a Galka with stubby little legs get a Kick Attack in? ^^

On another note, many people think that there needs to be one set party for the Promyvions... And that a Monk has no place there.
Well, the poster above me -Points at Mai- came along on our Promyvion-Holla the other day.
Combo hits pretty darn hard, let me tell you.
Coincidentally, that was the first time out of 8 tries that I beat that promyvion (First try [second attempt]) with that party.
Granted, the paladin did an amazing kite job, and the White mage kept buffs up perfectly, and MightyStrikes+Two weaponskills (Icarus Wing) totally rules, but..
Mai did a fantastic job.
Hundred Fists, go!

Anyways! Point is, Monks are solid DD that simply become -insane- damage in the end game, even moreso than they already are early on.
Plus they just look so darn cool. (>_<)/

Actually, I was just a monk on the Riverne - Site A#01 mission for CoP. We used mnk/nin, nin/war, nin/war, war/nin, whm, smn/whm and won easily. The two nin/war's each tanked their own mammet while the war/nin and I killed the third.

We both popped 2hr's in the beginning, but about 5 seconds after we both 2hr'd, he used transmogrification; which converts any damage dealt into hp for him. So we had to turn around and cry as our 2hr's were wasted. We still beat it on the first try though, so monk is definitely useful for some of the missions.

One other thing about monk, that no other DD can claim: monk is the only DD job that people /panic about in dynamis. Once a monk pops Hundred Fists, people have to spam flash and stun, or the whole alliance gets wiped.

Heh, thanks Aidyn.

Truth be told, I'm afraid to use Hundred Fists in parties anymore, I always get eaten by pulling hate off the Invincible PLD before the 45 second timer runs out. >_<

And on a side note, my sig got a quote, yay me! XD

I'd just like to take a small sidetrack: There was the comment made a few times that Samurai are not pure DD. Maybe this is just a question of semantics, but something about that didn't sound quite right to me. Now admittedly my Sam is only 24(or as I would admit, not a real Sam yet), but with my experience with most Sams, I would content they are in fact a pure DD.

Why? Well if they are "Skillchain enablers," what exactly is the purpose of this skillchain? What do skillchains do, rub the monster's tummy? Admittedly they skillchain more than other DDs but bad setrup or not, they don't always have multiple skillchains. For example Sam and RNG chaining together. The Sam might need that meditate just to keep up with the RNG. Or maybe there's just no other melee, and the tank is PLD who never ever has TP.
It's just like saying... the only good DRK WS to end distortion is Slice, so therefore by requiring the RNG to do Piercing arrow for Slice to create distortion, the DRK is in affect not a "DD".
I really feel the need to pull the Sam away from the pack in terms of comparison is completely unneeded.

Though admittedly... off topic.
