I was thinking is there an Enmity cap like there is a haste cap but is there one for hate? Right now I'm lvl 65 and have +14 Enmity and I'm considering buying a Mermaid's Ring which is Enmity +2. It's 100K right now and I don't really wanna buy it and it be useless because I've reached a cap or something. Any help is much appreciated.

I hate to answer this with a not-so helpful answer, as I'm a fellow pld myself..but I don't really know either. However, this livejournal blog: http://kanican.livejournal.com/ has got some extensive enmity tests on it, and might be able to guide you to the answer you seek. Plus it is full of useful info regardless. Sorry I can't be more helpful. In my case I usually just wing it, and it's worked out fairly well. :P

Cheers.

Put simply, there is a cap, but you're not going to reach it in gear.

In terms of whether or not it's worthwhile getting a Mermaid's Ring, you just need to consider the alternatives which may outweigh the +2 Enmity, such as Hercules' +3 enmity at 66. Bare in mind too that DEF, VIT, and HP still play an important role in your gear choices, so perhaps consider something like Unyielding ring for DEF/VIT, or perhaps Bomb Queen Ring for HP (or Bloodbead, if you can get your hands on one).

At level 65, I ... won't bother. But just consider that PLDs, NINs or even RDMs at 75 have over +30 in emnity in their gear.

Supposedly there's a +100 Enmity (ie, 100% more hate generated per action) cap, but since it's unreachable outside of Sentinel, it's mostly a moot point.

oh ok cool, well I don't feel I need any more VIT or HP+ as I'm a Galka so I mainly go for a lil bit of MP+ and Enmity+ so the Hercule's ring would be a better idea then, I'll look into it now.

well I use mermaid's ring in many situations because without satva ring (got rajas for drg) mermaid and herc make for most enmity I can get in ring slots, but it's just one of many rings I use for different situations. other common rings I use in many situations include BQ and jelly, herc I end up keeping on almost all the time, never got bloodbead but I'd like one and well D ring's don't grow on trees.

at your lvl I was using unyielding and phalanx for those red crawlers or jelly and BQ for most other mobs. herc ring was great at 66. overall though it's not a big deal I use mermaids now just because often magic and fire damage especially are issues so I can't use jelly/BQ and my ring choices are limited. when /war I could see using unyielding instead maybe but I usually just go enmity>def cause holding hate is often more of an issue for me. of course I also have no enmity merits(blm and drg wouldn't enjoy +enmity very much)

Right now I'm using a Phalanx ring an Ether Ring (I'm a Galka) Insomnia Earring (Again MP needed) and a Mercenary's Earring (I could rep this but I'm not sure what to put in it's place)

max mp isnt important unless you somehow manage to run out of mp after each fight and cant get it back in time for the next fight.
a parade gorget and hercules ring should give you autorefresh + sanction refresh + regular refresh(or drain samba or ballad) means you really dont have as many mp problems as you think you do.

From what I've seen of someone's findings concluded enmity works in percentages

"The -enmity stats is retardly good beyond -50. Your hate from whatever is reduce to half at -50, one-third at -66, one-fourth at -75 ... and 1/100 at -99." Taken from Scholar discussion #3 Post March update thread on BG.

Anything between say 51-65 is supposed to be useless unless you can break the next teir. So I'm going to assume +enmity works very similar to -enmity

Hercs ring only procs if you are in orange HP, so that isn't countable for refresh, unless your PLD stays in Orange HP for..ever. But yeah max mp isn't that important especially /war since u have tons of ways to hold hate.

At 66, Hercules' Ring and Unyielding Ring are a good combination. As for earrings, you don't have much choice. Stoic, Insomnia and Antivenom are decent. Buckler Earring is a great choice too. As i keep saying in lots of topics however, most gear is situational. I won't go into too much detail here, but you should try to pickup lots of pieces of gear and adjust them to your situation accordingly.

(If you are interested in the details however, then read further.)
Spoiler:
Some examples of different situations in EXP parties where some different gear choices would be more appropriate than others;

MP gear
A party with less support may lead to faster MP consumption, which means some extra MP+ gear will help you last longer in this setup before having to rest (read: resting = slower flow of EXP).

HP gear
It's uncommon, but there are going to be situations where you'll be fighting mobs in EXP parties that have some very damaging TP/Magic moves that WILL put you into red (e.g. Erucas' incinirate WS, which supposedly functions like a "failed" Bomb Toss and Mijin Gakure in that it's damage is partially proportionate to the mob's current HP)

Enmity gear
Fairly obvious here, but sometimes there are situations where you're going to need to choose more Enmity than normal in EXP parties, at the cost of DEF/VIT & HP/MP. I.e. a party very heavy on the more "dangerous" melee jobs such as Dark Knight, Monk, or a non-/THF Samurai, which WILL pull hate. In such situations, you will have to use more Enmity equipment than a more "safe" party setup in order to prevent as much damage to the melees as possible (which, again, would slow EXP flow as mages would be cure-bombing the wounded melees) by focusing all your efforts on turning the mob's attention to you.

The moral of the story is that there is no perfect gear set for every situation. Adjust your gear to adapt to the situation.

Cool thanks for the suggestions, I just got 68 earlier and grabbed a Hercules ring. I'm gonna look into a new earring to replace my VIT+2 one maybe that bucklers one. Thanks for the help guys :D

Ive got a paladin question, too...

I know Vitality is an important stat to take care of when playing PLD, but just how important is it? At what point or ratio would defense be a better choice than using VIT?

This is while leveling paladin, not end-game, obviously.

Edit: to clarify, I dont mean the 2/1 VIT to DEF ratio. Just how much defense would I need to make +1 VIT obsolete?

damage calculation looks like

is (enemy att)/(your def)*(enemy weapon damage+(enemy STR -your VIT+ (a constant 4 or greater, having to do with str-vit value))/2)

there's also some stuff having to do with weapon rank to find damage range and your lvl difference but nothing you can do about those so lets focus on this... as you can see because it has 2 parts multiplied together depending on the mobs stats VIT or def can be more important. unfortinately the constant added after str-vit gets larger as your VIT starts to win until it caps at +13 (when you have 22 more VIT than then enemy has STR) so that VIT's effect is hurt a lot unless you have a huge amount more vit than your enemy has str, however again if the enemie's STR far exceed's your VIT you would also be in some trouble, in most situations this doesn't happen so just focusing on def and grabing extra VIT when you can is usually fine. you can read more about this on ffxi/bg wiki.
