A Problem :/

This year i actually plan to go to Japan and buy a 91 skyline and turn it into a 1000whp monster. Dsports only got 850 out of theres but ill get there :3 Then ill take you up on that challenge :)

You are going to buy a $30,000 car, and spend another $50,000 on the american conversion? (to make it street legal, ie, not have it impounded). Either way, some things aint really adding up here. Unless your name appears on some rookie list on an SCCA racing roster, or some other Laguna Seca affiliate (which I dont' currently see any female names on said list) then I'm gonna call BS here. If you've got that much money to blow at the age you say you are, then I fail to see where you have any problems having friends or getting your life in perspective. (Or living at with parents, for that matter!) You must have had one hell of a summer job!

And I know for damn sure, Skip Barber aint handing out this kind of cash to a rookie!

Ive been saving up money for a whileeee now and i havent really looked into it all that much but There are acouple sites that actually prepare the car for you and ship it over. But I would like to go over there I said I PLAN on it didnt I?
Thats a ways off though.

50k is being generous too.

You said "This year" and you are talking about an excursion that would cost upwards of $90k+ (not just for the car, but the trip expenses and everything else.)

And if you don't have a passport, well, that'll dash those dreams of going until late, late 2008 or even possibly 2009.

OMG lol i meant this year as in 2008 hun :)

In all seriousness Kiskie, if you really want a 91 Skyline and you actually had that kind of money, you would be better off buying one already street legal and going from there. Your money would go much further and you would come out with a better car in the end IMO.

Even if my 67 Mustang will still rip it a new one :D

I have 70k for the project (ive saved every dime I make and my 18th b-day i got a rly big gift from my grandpa) The problem is the skylines already here will either a) be stupid in price or b) not attainable at all cause no one will sell one. I HIGHLY doubt that a few engine tweaks and a left hand drive convert will cost me 50k

They don't sell often, but they aren't exactly rare. In the past year, I have seen Twin Turbo 91 Skylines sell for around 35K at auto auctions/impound sales at least 6 or 7times, and they weren't even big shows. Don't go for individual sellers because yes, you will get ripped off.

And you would be surprised to see what "tweaks" will cost you unless you can do it yourself or know someone who can. Most places won't work on them and if they do, will charge you a lot more. That is why my family fully restores cars from crap. Go to any auction show in a 200 mile radius from NYC and you will probably see someone from my family there lol

O.O really? I did see one on the freeway the other day and almost gave my grandpa a heart attack ><

This will be my most likely ticket yo getting one

You are also forgetting the engine modifications it would take to pass emissions testing, especially in California. People seem to forget that adding a catalytic converter to an exhaust system that wasn't built for it does two things... 1) murders the performance of the engine and 2) can costs upwards of 10k on modifications alone. Also... oh god ALSO you can't forget that any imported cars are now required to include an EGR system (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) to burn off rich fumes left by those tuner cars. That's easily another 5k system. It stupid crap like this that will trip you up. And do you have any idea the labour cost it would be to convert a curb side steer car to a road side steer? Think of all the wiring, the dashboard molding, the rerouting of sensors and, well, everything! It's no weekend job, Kiskie.

Don't forget about customs adding a 2.5% import tax on autos. It all adds up Kiskie.

Heh, catalytic converters and on-board computers have pissed me off so much recently. I was fixing a friends Honda Accord a few months back, and when I was done, everything on it was perfect (timing belt snapped, luckily it didn't bend or break any of the pistons, but I had to replace the head and some other junk) He realizes his inspection is almost up, and goes to get it checked out, and it fails the new NYS emissions test. He brings it back to me a bit pissed, and I stood there and was like "I have no fucking clue" I start going over every inch of the car to see what is wrong, but since I didn't really touch any part of emissions, it was starting to freak me out. I ended up replacing his entire exhaust system out of pocket which wasn't much since I always have parts and labor is free lol

I have never really dealt with the on-board computer before. Turns out all I had to do was hit reset on it. When you detach the battery, it basically uncalibrates everything and you have to reset it lol

Anyways, simple things do add up.

Down at the bottom there are 4 boxes hit Conversion/pricing information

Which model you looking at? I'll keep an eye out at shows to see whats up in my area if you give me the specs you are looking for. I know you want something close to stock, which might be hard, but doable.

They seem pretty legit. They are definately all asian though. If you read the fine print in thier FAQ, it states that they include aftermarket and shipping costs separate from the conversion cost, so I'd be wary of that. (Aftermarket is a broad term, it could be made into anything)

Lanien, we should talk. I co-run restoration/chop shop down here, and we are always looking for more help! That, and I <3 NY.

Specialized shop? Or restore anything anyone brings you? If it's the latter, that sounds hot... My family mostly does American made stuff, we have done Hot Rods, Vets, Mustangs, Chargers, and Camaros mostly, but have dabbled a bit in foreign stuff. Parts aren't as cheap and this is really just a huge hobby of ours.

Let me know what you have going on down there.
