During the 3? years I played FFXI, I went through quite a few end game linkshells, and noticed the same thing about all of them: Most of the members seemed to be against using a VoIP process. The same could be said about Dynamis.

This baffles me, mostly because I've played a lot of other MMORPGs and in every other one, it's almost required to get anywhere.

It's not like we have a crazy advanced chat system. It's really not even as good as other games.

There are a lot of encounters in FFXI that require precise strategy and mechanics from every member of the group, yet, people still manage to progress with just the chat system.

Not having VoIP for a night in say, WoW, is devastating for most groups.Maybe because they're so used to having instructions given out through it, but it completely cripples people.

It's actually quite profound.

What are your opinions?

It definitely makes stuff easier. During statics I can't count how many times our puller would say on Vent that he may get a link so the sleepers know to stand up early - tough to type something like that out while you're dodging and weaving between mobs trying to avoid more links or aggro.

With the advent of Einherjar where every second counts, it would be beautiful to see in-game support for voice chat. It only takes me a few seconds to type something out in LS chat during a run but that's still a few seconds I could be using to target other people for ailments or cures.

It probably has something to do with the userbase of Final Fantasy games in general, since it's most a console game, and until (relatively) recently, you generally didn't use much in the way of voice communication in console games. After all, there's no integral VoIP to FF, and in the PS2 version it could be a pain to arrange for some folks.

For myself, I'm just a gamer who has been around long enough that there really weren't any sort of voice chat tools lying around when I started, so I'm used to using the keyboard to communicate. In some ways it's easier for me to use text, since my short-term memory isn't the best really, and it helps me if I can scroll up and see what I'm supposed to be doing in a few seconds.

I've used it a few times, it's amazingly easier to coordinate a group with a VoiP program. You'd no longer have people unable to do anything for a few seconds while they type something out, or people missing their timing because you couldn't type out the order fast enough. It's also fun as hell to mess with the frequency of people's voices, get them really low so they sound like Buffalo Bill(Silence of the Lambs) or high enough so they sound like they just inhaled some helium.

I'd never heard of anyone actually opposed to using it though, the only downside is you'd have to pay for a server to get good quality out of it. What would be their reason for not wanting it, they're retarded and think it's cheating or something?

The ability to effectively communicate to your team mates without having to type out during intense situations (where you might need the full use of your character, for example tanking) is my favourite part about Ventrilo. It also makes answering questions easier, as well as relaying information that needs to be said quickly (such as "HOLY SHIT STUN THE AOE!")

I just wish more people would buy headsets.

Definitely a plus, though I've not taken part in much aside XBLive chat p2p.

Might hop on Vent after I snag a headset.

Anyone in here remember RogerWilco? lol XD

Heck I miss back when TeamSpeak was TeamStream ;p

Made me think of Ghostbusters and drunk nights trying to cross the streams while whizzing on cop cars lmao.

Kind of like that poor cab Fly and I separately cut loose on after that last night at the bar with his new O-Hat.

I'd probably be more inclined to use a VoIP system if I could get Windower to run without completely screwing up my lighting. Although in theory SE might be putting in a windowed mode this winter...

No teamspeak = no raid for a lot of WoW guilds, as has been said it makes life 1000000 times easier. I really hope the voice chat Blizzard are putting into WoW works properly.

I am not opposed to it, I just can't make use of it. When I first bought my comp 3+ years ago, I could not get it to work then. I had a friend who is relatively good with computers check it out and he couldn't get it to work. I bought several different mics and nothing. I just cannot bring myself to pay for another mic that I know won't work. I have used vent a few times with FF, but I was only able to listen and it really helps although in reality, we only used it for chatting.

I think the main reason is like Raes said. FFXI = PC and Console where as WoW = only PC. If half the group you are with is on PS2 then even if you are in vent, you will still have to type stuff out to everyone else, so you might as well just type it all.

Personally i love Vent/TS. Not only does it make things easier, its just a hell of alot more fun. Talking > Typing anyday.

I can safely say that some of my best moments in both FFXI and WoW were made 10x better because of hearing other people's reactions. Nothing beats having someone softly hum the first part of the Indiana Jones theme, only to have the whole channel erupt into a choir seconds later. Like Raes and a few others have said: It's because this game is also played on two consoles. Were it PC only, I'm sure there would be so many more things we could have access to.

Unless your PC and PS2(or 360) aren't in the same room, you could still use TS/Vent.

If you have the internet, yet no PC or Laptop, what the fuck is wrong with you?

I find it more necessary in WoW than I ever did in FF to use Vent. Battles in FF are just so much more straight forward than anything you will find in WoW, so it just seems a little more necessary for WoW than in FF. With that said though, having it in FF could only make events go that much more smoothly and would probably enhance gameplay and relieve the monotonous camping in endgame.

hmm-hmmhmm-hmm-hm-hmmm

lol  thats brilliant. i wish i could have heard that.

The server is multiligual. This would suck for many linkshells.

Actually both United and DynamisHeretics use a Vent server with access for anyone in the linkshell (only) and we have multilingual people that come on there with us.

I think Vent is a very, very useful tool when leading Dynamis runs or even large events that you participate in. Its much faster, like some have said in posts before, to push one button and explain a link/train or something that came up than type, dodge and run at the same time. Sometimes the spam gets too fast even if you have filters on to type, or you need to call out directions.

With Vent I can type, move my character and talk at the same time.

...I sound like a commercial...
