A statistical note: Ventrilo/TeamSpeak

Nothing beats having someone softly hum the first part of the Indiana Jones theme, only to have the whole channel erupt into a choir seconds later.

Or when someone says something emo, and you switch your mic over to "what you hear" and start playing Crawling extremely loud :D

The server is multiligual. This would suck for many linkshells.
You can't possibly be that stupid. 99% of linkshells are speak predominantly one language; that's what they'd use in vent. PS2 players not being able to use vent as easily is a bigger problem than language.

There are barely any, if they even exist at all, linkshells without a common language.

We never used TS or some other chat system, although it was brought up. The main reason against it was that there would be too much random chat on it and hard to get a message accross, especially if more than one person is speaking at a time. With the text, you can see multiple things at the same time and scroll back up if you missed it, and theres no chance of not understanding what somone said.

Another big reason was that in all honesty, it just seemed to cross a line for events. I know Im not alone in feeling a little too nerdy using a headset while playing a video games. Im the first to admit we're pretty much all nerds at least on some level, but it just kinda crossed that line for me.

It seems alot more appealing for just chatting with friends, not for events. Thats my 2c anyways.

I think you are the one stupid. Just because you are american in US linkshell doesnt mean everyone does the same. I'm EU, in EU linkshells. Do you have a clue how many languages there are in EU ?

I've been in linkshells with people from all over the world, everyone was still speaking English. Even for EU, they're going to congregate in groups with similar languages; hell English is pretty much the global language anyways so I wouldn't be surprised if they use that.

There's no way that you're in a linkshell where no one speaks a common language.

Edit: there are also not a great deal of predominantly EU endgame linkshells, and endgame is where you're more likely to use vent; so it's not really an issue for a social linkshell where people can't communicate with each other. In endgame linkshells, you HAVE to be able to communicate quickly and correctly or you're going to fail; so your entire point of people who speak different languages is completely irrelevant.

I'm in a pretty small end game LS and did all of CoP until 8-3 when I went on vacation and we went 1/1 on every mission except Ryuo (sp?) we went 1/3 because we had to change jobs around. But we always use Vent for everything Limbus, SKY, Assualt or anything we do and it works wonders if ever 1 person messes something up it has always been the person not in vent.

It's amazing how much Ventrilo improves the game and mess ups. We almost never wipe or lose to anything and we don't even have a huge shell or people with the best gear on the server.

P.S.
We have Europeans in our LS too and they know how to speak English. :)

OuterHeaven/Antares used vent extensively. I guess that's why everyone thought that everyone in the ls was a cheater. :o

i speak arabic on vent ... want to hear me sing ? ;p

want to hear me sing ? ;p

In Arabic too? /grin

If you do, I'm recording your voice and making some remixes of songs here that could use a touch. ;x

Dude its ffxi, i think using a headset should be the least of your worries...

using a headset(and mic) on FF11 is meh... but theyre really helpful if you play FPS's

The problem can come with laggy situations or when you have a job you shouldn't be typing for. For example in a bad situation on a tank, the last thing the tank should do is stop to type out what their problem is, or if a stunner notices something, the move they're supposed to stun may go up as they type, etc...

Not so much a problem for quick typers, but some people don't have that luxury =P . And it's not necessary at all, but I find it easier to communicate on vent than in game.

It might just be a personal opinion, or what people are used to using. I didn't actually use vent much at all until recently, and did everything ingame just fine, even with the rest of my group on vent.

That's where you're partialy wrong in assuming.

While yes, most everyone can communicate in written english, quite a lot of countries in EU have rather low standards when it comes to understand and communicate in verbal English. Other then Brittain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland are at the top when it comes to communicating in English. Most other countries have little to no education in verbal English, and thus have a hard time undesrtanding and speaking English. That's why it wouldn't work as well in European shells and on a multilingual level.

Just because they can write and read English doesn't mean they have extended knowledge in actually speaking and understand it. Hell, there's quite a lot of English dialects I have a very hard time understanding, such as Spanish english, French english, scottish English, hell, even a few American and Brittish accents are hard to understand at times.

Considering the huge ammount of different accents the English language have, linkshells with people from several nations can missunderstand eachother at times, or simply not hear what the other is saying properly, which can cause people having to repeat what they said.

While yes, Vent allows people to fast and efficiently communicate with eachother, the downside is that it can cause missunderstandings, several people talking at once, thus not hearing eachother, or people simply not understanding said accent etc.

Adn that is where text communication have its benefits. It is hard to write in accents, most everyone can read/understand it, and you can scroll up and reread it if need be. The downside is, naturally, that you can't play and type at the same time, and it takes slightly longer to get your message across.

Never thought about that issue with vent before, but I do recall now when I was in an exchange program, some of their english had thick accents, even though the grammar was correct, the pronunciation was really wrong, more than accent wrong since everyone did it differently.

They also stuttered alot and were often at a lost for words, or wouldn't understand an expression that we considered everyday language. Alot doesn't come through on text. I also remember all of them wrote English just as well if not better than most Americans =P

Actually I say quite the contrary. It is much easier to communicate using vent if for anything just to make quick decisions. Yes there some time alot of chatter sometimes, but that why there are mute buttons and multi channels. Personally think it make event more enjoyable and it make it so that you understand things clearly instead of leaving things out when you type. While yes there is a problem sometime with understanding because people are from different parts of the world most them still enjoy coming on to talk.

As for the nerdy part it not like people are calculating the % of survival. If anything it be like talking on the phone and well I would consider people that come on a ls vent to be friends. If not you wont have much fun.

Never really had a chance to use the systems. I play on 360, but also have my PC setup to play. I sit and chat to other friends on 360 so I don't suppose it would be much different to talk to a group of people. I would just need to actually load it on my PC and get a mic lol.

As far as getting things done I'm sure it would help a great deal. Being able to regroup after something happens, getting people into the right positions and things like that.

I use a controller primarily and when I'm tanking I don't have time to reach over to my keyboard and type a message all the time. Maybe I concentrate to hard on the task at hand, but I don't want people dying on my watch.

Either way I think it would be a good thing if it's used properly. As far as the "multiple people talking at the same time" goes, the group just has to be on the same page to begin with, and when the leader speaks, peeps need to just STFU and listen. A simple typed word for people to see so they know the leader is going to start speaking would probably do the trick.

Peace,
Shmed

*edit* woot post #500 LOL

Yet EU WoW guilds nearly all use TS or Vent and don't have problems. You also forgot the Dutch and Germans who speak/understand very very good English on the whole.

Only reason I haven't gotten Vent yet is because I'm lazy and don't know how to use it. I even have a headset and mic sitting right here....

Probably a good thing though. I'd be the annoying person that won't shut up and serenades the busy tanks with Spice Girls.

And your playtime is what? And you've been playing MMO's for how long? (Rhetorical questions.)

Look, we're all using our free time not only to sit here and dump hours into an online game but to come on to forums and discuss said online game and its mechanics with other nerds. There is no going back. You, and everyone here, are fucking nerds. Good thing it's fun, eh?

On second thought, perhaps all hope is not lost....

Wait, what was this thread about again?

I main play on 360 and secondary char play on my laptop. I turn the sound off on the laptop because I hate double sound feedback and the surround sound is much better than my laptop speakers. Also it would require more work to push a button on a diff keyboard I only do set routens(sp) on.

I also don't use it because my wife and kids already think I'm nerdy enough playing, if I started talking to myself they'd really think there was something wrong with me.

I used vent when I played mohaa in a clan/group. I don't see using it for ffxi, I've never had a issue communicating through text in ffxi. I sometimes find myself short of words in speech when dual boxing but I can type just fine.
