Even if there is a fraction of the Japanese players who hate Americans I'm sure the majority of the Japanese just find the auto-translate funtion cumbersome and incapable of relaying what you would really like to say. I know I hate the auto-translate feature but I am still willing to party with JP players.

now that i see the JP end of the auto-translate function, i know how bad it is. example: someone spams "[limit] [break] [help me out!]". seems innocently enough in english, but the [break] is translated as "yasumi" = a rest break. so in effect, it's asking "limit rest help me out".

ppl on our end need to learn that autotrans isnt exact. if you have mroe than 4 words of auto'd in your text the message has been destroyed adn is now random gibberish.

since this is the rant board, im gonna say i dont like JP ONLY. In fact i /fume every time i see it. why? ok example: me, forming pt, got 5 ppl together need one more. A refresher. I see no less than 4 rdm's seeking in lvl range. o wow i can have a killer pt :D no. noooooono. all 4, are JP only. Even though the pt i have has 2 other JP members they wont join. this is a true example of just last week. I mean.. come on. I join full JP pts all the time. I cannot understand even the simplest japanese letters, although i recognize many words just from frequent use (like yorosiku) but hey, im here for exp not chit chat. still some of the best pts ever were the ones where jp and na were making jokes and enjoying each others company via autotrans. like once in labby of onzozo, we were making jokes about orange [cat] becasue the toramas stayed orange after fire3, our jpn blm was laughing with us, when we called 'orange orange!' and he'd nuke it. we called [last] and he said [last] [samurai]! (coincidentally he was the third jp person to mention that i had met that day i think the movie just got released there lol.) and we had a good laugh over that too. Its so great when we DO come together, like full jpn pt whose thf was teaching me words, like 'save' and 'go' so it would be easier to communicate, that i just get sad and angry when i see ppl so unwillign to even try. ppl are ppl and some are asshats, i just wish it wasnt like that. I hate seeing na being asshats cuz i know it reflects badly on us as a whole and im sure a lot of jp's feel the same way about their own asshats.

Oh and Asshat stats are as follows:
(Ra/Ex) Enmity + 99 Def -99 Chr -99 Mnd -99 Int - 99 Str -99
Cannot Equip Brain
Recieved upon completing quest 'Everyone hates me'

I do not grudge Japanese at all for their attitude towards us. Frankly I am beginning to get the same attitude. I realize I'm probably an "elitist" but I dont party with only "standard" groups. Some of the best I've been in have looked like crap on paper. Anyways, it does frustrate me to no end though. People can say what they will, but I still think that the main reason that we are avoided by most Japanese is cause we suck. Well maybe not suck but if you have seen one in action, their parties are just disgusting. Effieciency to the max...example...

Most NA when they are looking for a tank look for a paladin. Its pretty standard that Paladin can hold hate better and will take less damage thereby reducing damage. Then you party with Japanese and you have two ninjas or a war/ninja, 2 black mages, bard, and something else. The WORST party I have been in with Japanese is about 5-6k per hour. No white mage which the majority of NA consider prerequisite to a party.

What frustrates me is that because many NA are underequiped/underleveld/suck, that all do. It is very few and far between that I will get an invite from a Japanese party, even during Japanese peak hours as a bard. I understand that communication can be bad, but really...as a bard I have to do a few things: Madrigal and another song of their choice on melee, ballad and etude on mages, threnody for skillchain, backup heal, DOT spells such as Requiem and Dia if you can squeeze them in,rinse, repeat endlessly...never getting a chance to be offensive. ; ; I realize that skilled jobs are out of the question. A ninja tank or black mage isnt gonna get invited. Too much depends on how they play. But it just irks me a tad...

I am very fond of the Japanese in honesty. Sometimes I am disgusted by ourselves and our air of superiority. Go ahead and tell me "if you dont like it then leave" which is really cool. I love America but damn we are stupid sometimes. Look how half the Japanese playing can speak decent enough English to communicate reasonably well. Compare that to how many Americans know another language or even part of. Bad ratio as most of us have the idea that "English is the only language I need to know and everyone should learn it". I am ashamed by my peers frequently and do my best to make up for it. I am studying Japanese as I intend to work with video games in my life and knowing Japanese can only help I believe.

I have strayed way off topic though. Yeah that was pretty messed up and most Japanese do think badly of us, or at least less of us than other Japanese people, the only thing we can do about it is be the best we can and try and make up for those people bringing the good souls out there down.

I got an invite a few days ago into a "skill" position in an all-JP party..

Asuran, Pineapple, and 3 others whose names I can't seem to grasp were in the PT...

Anywho, 4 out of the 5 people in the party had the "JP ONLY" comment in their search... I told them I didn't speak Japanese, but they didn't seem to mind. I couldn't understand them at all, lol, and they wouldn't use auto-translate except for when I started making jokes to them with it ^^

NA (Black Mage) = (Too Weak)?

Asuran, rank 10 BLM, replied.

(Very Tough)
<-- (Easy Prey)

We all had a good laugh.. they were really nice people, despite the language barrier. Who knows, maybe they were ripping on me. Maybe they were praising me? I don't care, because I had a great time.

The craziest thing that shocked me, is I think they were shocked when I asked what enfeebles we should do, and what the skillchain was right after joining... and a lot of /bowing and /cheering helped keep attitudes fresh all night. I found my play style for BLM is on par with the JP "style"... being more of a support caster until the higher EXP chains. JP are generally very nice people, in my experience. However, I doubt I'll get invited to a JP party on my THF, because the general belief is that NA suck balls at pulling and are wonderful at linking things. ; ; too bad

I feel ya Rune & Faed.

When I was leveling my WAR I got an invite to an all JP party to tank (lvl 13). I learned some interesting things about the way they party. I held hate well, and they complemented me often- /clap, /cheer/ VT WAR and such.

As my THF I have only been in two JP parties, and neither time would they let me pull. At first I was offended, as they would not let me even try.
We did set up some skill chains, which ended with me SA + Fastblade. This was the first time I had ever had distortion over 100+. I have had good NA and JP parties, but I have to agree with Faed; they are far more organized. Most NA parties that I end up in don't exp chain, and don't use skillchains. I can imagine that these pt's are the ones that don't like SATA.

/sigh

Uh, ecxuse me... have to prepare rant...

/rant on

All systems go? ok...

NO FREAKING EXP CHAINS!?!? What the HELL is your party thinking!?? Okay, lets say you pull an IT+... 200 exp. Fine and dandy, probably have to rest for a while.

Pull a T>VT>VT.... that should end up around 50, 120, 150 exp for the 3 pulls respectively... THEN you -might- have to rest for a while... and you're keeping yourself busy by actually pulling things instead of waiting at your keyboard. EXPing is never mind-numbing for me! EVER! Anyone who says it is needs to learn party dynamics, as it's one of the most exciting things in the game when done properly! Nothing beats finding a secluded camp, chain pulling in 4 or 5 every time, and having little downtime at all.

Eze, I think the distortion chain was more of a product of your party taking care to put together a skillchain rather than the players just being JP... I make -SURE- there is a skillchain every time, and if there isn't, there's a high chance I'll be LFGing VERY soon, because what effort does it take to hold TP for 10 more seconds to let your SC partner catch up? You generally gain more dmg from your WSes with higher TP anyway (not ALL the time... Read: Viper Bite), so it's not like you're losing damage by PUTTING TOGETHER a SC... hell, last night, I even made our WHM burst in Fusion with Banishga. We rocked once we found our niche.

Eze, please /slap your PTs if they don't want a SC... one of THF's biggest strengths is the ability to close massive skillchains. If they don't want to utilize you to your strengths, screw 'em, find another party that will ^^

yes.. asuran is a nice guy. a lot of jp in my old ls actually do use JP ONLY. i have no qualms about it though.

Rune, we should've pt'd together that night in Qifum. Yes, 75% of the pt's I've been in only want IT mobs, no matter how much explaining I do. And Skillchains.... I have a chart, and my 2nd question after joining is allways in what order......, but most parties think it is too dificult or a wast of time.

Believe me, I have left many a group.... but after the 3rd, I usually give up. Plus it's not like people are lining up to invite THF's.

So if you want to play this little stupid game, I will gladly give you an history book and search for someone called Lafayette.

Never tried quotes, not sure if that worked.
In any case, you're right. People have a shortsighted view of the French. They nearly conquered europe under Napolean, and when they got their asses kicked back to france, the european community was so afraid of them, the french got to KEEP some of the territories they had gained in conquest.
In fact, and to the subject, Hitler's attempted conquest failed in large part from ignoring the lessons taught by Napolean: don't invade Russia in winter.
This is of course fortunate. What is unfortunate is that the Japanese nation willingly allied themselves with the Nazis. Does that make the current Japanese players in any way culpable? Definitely NOT!. I was making my world war II comments mostly in jest. I didn't think anyone would take them seriously.
And also, France's capture during WWII was the result of the Nazi's revolutionary blitzkreig technique and France's over reliance on the Magineaux line. They didn't surrendor because they were wussses, they were outtghought and outmaneuvered. During the war, they had a substantial underground that aided the Allied forces and they fought like hell. People familiar with Star Trek, DS9 and Voyager know the name "Maquis". The name orignated in WWII as the name of the afore mentioned French resistance.
So, when you make fun of the French, don't do it because of their wars. Do it because since WWII they have been COMPLETE asses who have no thankfulness for our help. They are rude and smelly, and inhabit a country far to pretty for them! and THEY started Viet-Nam!

Nice post Dale, you make me re-learn my whole 18-20th century history lessons ...
But, if I can give you an advice, just skip the three last lines ... I don't really know if you're jocking or not ... and to tell the truth I don't care. But throwing stereotypes like that just make me believe on our own stereotypes about american people ... And it's a pity because I really dont want to believe them.
Think about the image of your country your showing, please.

P.S : I was right when I thought that nothing good can come from a thread about racism ... only more racism ...

Thanks Cocyte to clear it up.
Some ppl just never learn or don't want to.

Since I've been playing the game, I've been asked a dozen times (after telling I was french) from players "is that right that french women do not shave and do not wear bras?".

And that is without counting the lil stories of friends of mine going to the US of A in families who have showed them micro-wave ovens, dryers, etc... like some kind of magic devices as if we haven't got electricity yet!

You know what? I take a shower every morning, for real!!! With water, soap and all the stuff...
Voke the soap of me!!! VOKE IT OFF FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!

So please, get real.
And stop teasing me with your "they started this or that, they don't do this or that" coz for every single thing you could find, your past presidents (Reagan, Bush Sr&Jr, etc...) have given the world countless things to brag about.

So I'll tell you once more. If you want to make this world and the virtual world of Vanadiel better places to live, quite the insults, the historical facts and stick to the individuals.
I hate it when my compatriots insult the US citizens and it works both ways. So please grow up a little bit.

Yeah I mean really. Sure the Magineux line was supposed to be badass and all....but I think any person with common sense would have said "Hmmm Belgium it is then!"

In all actuality, up until now the French have been one of the most formidable military powers in history. All through the Dark Ages, they were on par with Britain (100 years war anyone?) up until Napleon who just utterly dominated. Now of course they don't even really need a military as we luckily decided to participate in every minor scrap the world has these days ( :? )

As for French arrogance, it is there no doubt, but do you honestly think we are any better? Half of us run around insulting every other nation just because we are the most dominant country in the world. How long do you think that will honestly last though? At the rate we are running, might even be in my lifetime that America has its big fall. It WILL happen, history prooves that. So until then we can continue to say things like "What?! Learn another language? Whyever for as every single place I go to they will know it cause we are so badass?" Sure we lose the respect of the rest of the world....but who needs it?!

Franly, Australia looks better everytime I think about it :) Hot women, peaceful place, and fun accents WHHEEEEEE......

I used to thin that America's empire would fall, much as the Roman empire fell and empires befrore and after it, but I'm not so sure anymore. Global interaction has become so great, profound, and prevalent that the interdependence of nations is so strong, the world couldn't survive the fall of America. Our trade deficit is so enormous, other nations' economies would collape without us. Similarly, we have become so dependant on other places for import that we are no longer self-reliant enough to live in a world gone to shit. Remember not so long ago when Asia's economy fell? We bolstered it because we could afford to do nothing less. It draws ire and anger from nations ultimately jealous of our power.
Consider this: be it right or wrong, recently we entered two soverign nations, Afghanistan and Iraq, and changed their governments because we didn't like them. THAT is power. I don't believe we belong in Iraq, really anymore that Sadam Hussein belonged there.

And if you think I've gotten off topic, let me swing it back

Ever seen Shogun, or The Last Samurai? Read anything about Japan before WWII? It's like different places. This is because after we defeated the Japanese in WWII, it is the United States that wrote the JAPANESE constitution. Not them. Us. It is WE that protect them because they aren't allowed, by us and the world powers, to have an army. Germany wouldn't have been allowed an army after wwII except that the same idea was tried after WWI and it resulted in one thing: WWII.
Should every Japanese man and woman and every French man and woman be more greatful to us? No. They have rights. Their rights are guaranteed by constitutions patterned after ours (the great French Revolution occurred right after ours and inspired by ours... except for the beheadings). I honor the French that fought hard against the Nazi Occupational forces, and I admonish the many, many since that have no regard for the sacrifice of American, British, Canadian, Australian, and Russian (and more) soldiers who lost their lives so that France could be free.
It is the right of Japanese people and French people to be rude to Americans. I wouldn't have it any other way. I'd rather wish that they use their rights to learn more and think for themselves, and be a little mor respectful. Then again, I wish that the United States would act a little better. The U.S. has done some bad things. Some terrible things. Does that seriously outweigh the good we do? The money we give to the rest of the world? I know it's fashionable to hate the U.S., even if you're a citizen. I hate the players, not the game. We've got some baaaad players. Some elected legitiamtely, some... not. Could we be better world citizens? You bet! Could the western world stop giving us shit because we're so DAMNED COOL and that they want to be US so BAD it HURTS! Absolutely.

woaw ... thx again for the geopolitical summary ... but you know, in France, you should have had the minimal mark ... why ? Because you are not in the subject.
This forum is dedicated to a GAME. If I want a political debate, I go on political forums. The subject of this thread is relationship between players from different countries and frankly, I don't think politics should interfere. Learn to be tolerant and have fun in the game.

But you bring the subject I answer :

Thirst thing : I think that pityfull individuals like you and me should'nt speak about subject they don't really know. I don't know how old you are, and what studies you've done, but, reading you, I dont think you have a wide knowledge of what really happened and what is happening.

Second thing : Everybody should realize that politics is all about POWER. Everything else is propaganda. So don't speak about things like we saved your ass during WWII ... thats right, but you were doing it for economical and strategic reasons, not because america is the savior of the world (at the contrary, French helped americans against english for their independance unically for strategic and economical reasons ... same motivations).

My conclusion : dont let events which happened before you were born or political propaganda affect your relationship with individuals.

You say some things right and thoughtful ...

From the moment you understand your democracy and your way of life is not THE model on which every other nations must base their economics, politics and culture, you'll have make a long way.

Dude, what the hell ARE you talking about???
Pitiful? Speak for yourself, not me
The subject of this thread is relationship between players from different countries and frankly, I don't think politics should interfere. Learn to be tolerant and have fun in the game.
How the hell CAN'T politics interfere?!?! Politics surround everything that we do. If you're really in France, you should know this, what having a more socialist government that Americans do.
I DO have a fair knowledge of what "really" happened and what is "really" happening.
And while it could be said that war is the result not of a wealth of discontent, but of a discontent of wealth, may be true, it is far too basic to say that we fought WWII for "strategic" and "economic" reasons. You COULD say everything we do, we do to survive. Like eating for instance. WE buy food with money (economy). So we go to war for food. VERY simplistic way of looking at it. Like saying politics is NOTHING but power, and the rest is propoganda. That is far too simple an explanation of politics.
Regardless
He who forgets his history is doomed to repeat it. To ignore history, as you suggest, would be folly. All of our history, the U.S. and Japan's, is relevant today. It is relevant in our interactions. The idea that politics is irrelevant in this situation is naive. Politcs are played in EVERY social setting, except maybe fictional, anarchy driven ones. Politics are even used in FFXI parties!
And as far as the subject of this forum: 2 things--
1) Topics branch off into new ideas. That is part of intelligent discourse.
2) It isn't as if ALL posts on EVERY topic are dedicated to geo-political interaction. No one forces you to read ANY of this, certainly no one makes you respond.

You must be one of the most f*cked up mind I'd had to meet!!
As always, you're true about not forgetting history to avoid repeating the foolishness of the past but you encourage THOSE stupid things to happen again by claiming HONOR, RESPECT and FOOD (!) from people you do not even know and in fictional worlds!!!
What we try to make you understand for way too long is that we know what past governments have done, we know what YOUR government has allowed to be done in the name of "liberty", "legitimacy" (and "food" lmao) but we (Cocyte and I) are smart enough to put it aside for the duration of a game and play in harmoney!

For god's sake, is it too much to ask of you to use your wisdom to play with ppl without blaming their newbieness or errors on geopolitics???
What will be your next rant? Spit on female player because their ancestor ate an apple???

What do you think that I see when I encounter a group of american tourists?? Evil fat, gun wielders asking for respect from a freed country 50years before???? No, I see human beings asking their way in a foreign country.

Now it is time for you to grow up for, as long as you'll have ressent for ppl you do not even know, you'll just throw another log into the fires of xenophobia, terror and hatred and that is the fires that consume and make path for decades of wars and terrorism.

Dude, what the hell ARE you talking about???
Pitiful? Speak for yourself, not me

I DO have a fair knowledge of what "really" happened and what is "really" happening.
To make myself clear, I didn't want to insult you using word "pityful", but I really think you could learn some humility.

How the hell CAN'T politics interfere?!?! Politics surround everything that we do. If you're really in France, you should know this, what having a more socialist government that Americans do.
Do I let politics interfere in my gaming experience ... I dont think so ... do you ? It seems to ... It's a choice dude. Politics interfere in soo many things in your life, don't let it invade your gaming time.

And while it could be said that war is the result not of a wealth of discontent, but of a discontent of wealth, may be true, it is far too basic to say that we fought WWII for "strategic" and "economic" reasons. Simplistic ... but valid in my opinion ... I dont want to go deeper in philosophy here, but look carefully on human history and you will see that motivations are all about food and reproduction at a certains level ... (And there I agree, I'm FAR too simplistic ;) )

He who forgets his history is doomed to repeat it. To ignore history, as you suggest, would be folly.
For this one ... what can I say ... it's just plain stupid ... Saying that you just demonstrate that you didn't learned from history, just remembered it.

Politcs are played in EVERY social setting, except maybe fictional, anarchy driven ones. Politics are even used in FFXI parties!
Your saying it man. Did you forget you were playing in a fictional social setting ... ;)

2) It isn't as if ALL posts on EVERY topic are dedicated to geo-political interaction. No one forces you to read ANY of this, certainly no one makes you respond.
You're perfectly right on these two ... but you know, when I see some ideas spreading here I just can't stand them. I perfectly know you will not change your mind because I say something to you here, but it's a FlameBoard dude, so if I don't agree, expect me to say it.

Do I let politics interfere in my gaming experience ... I dont think so ... do you ? It seems to ... It's a choice dude. Politics interfere in soo many things in your life, don't let it invade your gaming time.
So there aren't any leaders in any parties you've participated in? No one suggests anything, and no suggestions are followed? I don't believe that for a second.
Defined, "Politics is the process by which people choose leaders and policies to be followed" and discussion thereof is politics, if even on a small scale, and is not limited to matters strictly involving government of nations.
but it's a FlameBoard dude, so if I don't agree, expect me to say it.
Sure, but you were complaining about the use of the forum, not simply disagreeing with my ideas. I WOULD expect you to, if you feel the need, disagree with me.
Did you forget you were playing in a fictional social setting ...
Fictional setting with real people interacting. If it were me and the computer, no politics.

How is that demonstrating that I haven't learned from history? that statement "demonstrates" excrutiatingly little.
The bottom line is that politics are an underlying dynamic in everything we do, and it is only magnified given the histories of our nations. All knowledge makes us part of who we are and has direct impact on what we do. If I were ignorant of the histories of nations, I would treat people differently than I do now. Which is not to say I treat people based entirely on where they were from. However, where you were raised has a huge impact on how you behave. It isn't something that is insignificant, like the color of your skin or the shade of your eyes. It is something that influences behavior. History influences the present. Regardless of if you think it SHOULD or not. And even if you are unaware of politics having a role in most interactions in FFXI, it does. That isn't an opinion, it is clear fact. Disregarding it doesn't make it untrue. Maybe you want to diminish the role of politics in this game, and maybe you want to remove as much of histories influence on its players as you can. That is a goal, and not without merit. It is your perogative and your right.
This thread started with Japanese prejudice against NA players. Is it all because of the gameplay of NA players? I highly doubt that it is. I'd be surprised if it weren't part of it. More accurately, it is probably the result of self-fulfilling prophecies. Because certain people hold beliefs about Americans (beliefs based in politics and history) they wait for us to fail. And, being human, sometime we make mistakes. Thus the JP can confrim "See? He fucked up! Told you he would!" and any positive interaction is diminished. Which isn't to say that some NA players cannot, and DO not, have the same expectations of other players. Whether that is a right way or a wrong way to conduct yourself, that is for anyone to decide. Either way you fall, it doesn't mean that its untrue.

With your definition, I agree, there is politics everywhere, but dont you think your a bit too general (I'm simplistic, you're general, same mistake ;) ). Your still not in the subject there, I was (and you were in your precedent posts) speaking about politics from outside the game ... geopolitics (and a bit of xenophobia). In my opinion, these have nothing to do in this game (or should have nothing to do, nothing is perfect).

Sure, but you were complaining about the use of the forum, not simply disagreeing with my ideas. I WOULD expect you to, if you feel the need, disagree with me.
That's right, I was complaining about your ideas AND the media you choose to express them. On allakhazam they have a word for what we are doing here : Hijacking the thread (at a certain level only, we are a bit far of the original subject, but still in the general idea).

Fictional setting with real people interacting. If it were me and the computer, no politics.
Yep, but it's a RPG ... you're not supposed to be what your are in real life. (I know, it can be difficult, but that's a part of why ppl play this type of games).

How is that demonstrating that I haven't learned from history? that statement "demonstrates" excrutiatingly little.
I thought it was clear. Let me develop a little. What I see in your precedent posts is :
- Some historical facts
- A lot of stereotypes and generalization.
You've already proven that you knew your modern history ... but the use of stereotypes and generalization make me believe that you don't "learned" (understand analyse here) from history. Racism, xenophobia and generalization took a great part in the worst evenements which happens in the last century (and a few others ;) ). So for me "learning" from history is to not repeat the same mistakes our ancestor did : using stereotypes and generalization.

You're right, but do you think making some "smart" WWII comments will help ? Or when someone complain about stereotypes, giving him more stereotypes ? Some ideas should not be used, even for making a joke.
Like Farys said, stick to individuals ... some are nice, others are not, some are racist, some are elitist ... great, that is why the blist command exist.
