Shiloh, a rottie who has been in our family for 16 years is dying. He can't stand up, he won't eat or drink, he's shivering uncontrollably and he's using all of the muscles in his body just to breathe. We are keeping him comfortable and are taking shifts sitting with him. My dad's a cop so we are having an animal control officer come out tomorrow and help us put him down at home, where he belongs.

Shiloh grew up with me. My nephews learned to walk hanging on to him. He was always so gentle with the babies and so protective. The kids used to go on "rides" with Shiloh, hanging onto him and sliding across the floor on their diapers. Once, I walked into the kitchen and my youngest nephew had ahold of poor Shiloh's tongue with both hands, pulling on it, and Shiloh had this look of "will you get me out of this?" on his face. Even being crawled on he never snapped or growled at anyone. He is as long-suffering as a saint.

He was so rambunctious when he was a puppy <think HUGE puppy> when he was about a year old, trying to get to the window because someone was mowing (he has this thing for lawnmowers, he thinks they are evil and must be destroyed) he took out the Christmas tree, OMG my mom was pissed lol.

Even though he weighed about 190 lbs, he never got tired of sitting in my lap. I would sit on the floor and he would carefully back up and plop his big ol behind down in my lap and I'd let him sit there until my feet went numb from lack of circulation lol.

Truly Shiloh has always been a big baby. Even the slightest bit of discomfort was too much for him, you should have see the wrestling matches him and my dad had trying get his toenails clipped.

Shiloh's favorite food in the whole world is vanilla ice cream. He loves the water and each summer we provided him with his own wading pool to wallow in. Usually it ended up Shiloh and a couple of kids sharing the wading pool, but Shiloh never seemed to mind.

If you have read this far, thank you. You may find it silly to post a tribute to a dog but I don't care. I love Shiloh and I'm going to miss him so much, life is going to be very strange without him.

I'm sorry Kink. I have a Doberman/Rottweiler and I don't even want to think about when it's time for him to go. I recently lost my German Shepherd "Rocky" to old age, it's not easy seeing something you've loved for over 15 years go that way.

So sorry to hear that. I remember when my parents had to tell me that my jackrussel, Bambi, had been mowed down by some cunt that drove off. I was only 9 or so but jesus, did it suck. And since I just moved to vegas I had to give away my puppy cockerspaniel named Refridgerator (Yes, I suck with names) to my niece. It's tough losing a pet, because it's honestly not "losing a pet", it's like losing a member of your family.

Yeah it sucks, my dog (Jackson) is getting there too sadly. He has trouble getting up and sitting down sometimes and he can barley get down the three stairs when i let him outside now. Also whats up with the shivering? My dog does that too sometimes, not very often but every once in awhile.

This past spring, I lost a dear friend, my cat of 16 years, Melody (who I affectionately called just Mel for short). Reading your tribute to Shiloh got me all misty-eyed remembering her. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure he greatly appreciates you all making his final days the best he's ever lived. And while he may not understand everything thats happening, he understands the love you've all shown him. You'll always have the memories of him, and while it will be tough, you'll understand that he's hurting now, and when his pain is gone, he'll be in a whole other world, filled with light, and peace, and treats, and all the lawn-mowers he could ever hope to destroy.

Peace be with you, Shiloh. Your work on this world is nearly done.

Sounds like an awesome dog Kink, at least he's left you with so many memories.

It is sad to have pets go, they are a massive impact on an owners life, and great companions too.

It's nice to see you have so many good memorys of Shiloh, and atleast in his passing you'll be able to celebrate what a lovely life he led.

It's strange with some pets, they seem to be in extremes, they're either one of the devil's own, or truely a blessing, and you'll always remember them (whether for the right reasons or not is another matter though :p ).

Have you thought of perhaps a little Shiloh Jr on the way to commemorate him? As heartless as it sounds, new life helps to deal with the grief of lost life.

Sorry to hear about Shiloh, but he'll be in a better place. I've recently had to put down my cat of 12+ years, and it was hard, but life goes on, I'll never forget her though.

Update on Shiloh

The vigil is over, Shiloh went into convulsions about 8 pm and died shortly thereafter. It was a pretty peaceful death and I never saw any sign that he was in pain. We had a nice little funeral service for him where all the members of my family talked about him a little bit and we all cried together. Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts, they mean alot to me.

Be strong.

He'd likely expect no less.

I'm so sorry kink, it's obvious that you all loved him dearly and it's good of you to express that the way you did.

Like veovis said, be strong.
