Shiloh, a rottie who has been in our family for 16 years is dying. He can't stand up, he won't eat or drink, he's shivering uncontrollably and he's using all of the muscles in his body just to breathe. We are keeping him comfortable and are taking shifts sitting with him. My dad's a cop so we are having an animal control officer come out tomorrow and help us put him down at home, where he belongs.
Shiloh grew up with me. My nephews learned to walk hanging on to him. He was always so gentle with the babies and so protective. The kids used to go on "rides" with Shiloh, hanging onto him and sliding across the floor on their diapers. Once, I walked into the kitchen and my youngest nephew had ahold of poor Shiloh's tongue with both hands, pulling on it, and Shiloh had this look of "will you get me out of this?" on his face. Even being crawled on he never snapped or growled at anyone. He is as long-suffering as a saint.
He was so rambunctious when he was a puppy <think HUGE puppy> when he was about a year old, trying to get to the window because someone was mowing (he has this thing for lawnmowers, he thinks they are evil and must be destroyed) he took out the Christmas tree, OMG my mom was pissed lol.
Even though he weighed about 190 lbs, he never got tired of sitting in my lap. I would sit on the floor and he would carefully back up and plop his big ol behind down in my lap and I'd let him sit there until my feet went numb from lack of circulation lol.
Truly Shiloh has always been a big baby. Even the slightest bit of discomfort was too much for him, you should have see the wrestling matches him and my dad had trying get his toenails clipped.
Shiloh's favorite food in the whole world is vanilla ice cream. He loves the water and each summer we provided him with his own wading pool to wallow in. Usually it ended up Shiloh and a couple of kids sharing the wading pool, but Shiloh never seemed to mind.
If you have read this far, thank you. You may find it silly to post a tribute to a dog but I don't care. I love Shiloh and I'm going to miss him so much, life is going to be very strange without him.
