Activision shit storm inbound! Pay to play CoD Online!?

God forbid developers make money.

Fucking Pachter. He's found his media niche at least; making bold pronunciations on the basis of limited information.

Hence why Everyone hates this prick. Is it just me or is he trying to sabotage the industry?

Well, no more CoD online for me if that goes ahead. :)

this, breaks my heart =( I was a pretty hardcore cod fanboy back in call of duty 1 days. but i wont be picking up any cod with pay2play online, unless they REALLY redefine the online fps and make some mmo style getup that is actaully worth paying a monthly fee for. but I'm doubtful of that.

So I'm guessing this isn't from a reputable source, I'd wait it out. Wonder how long it will take before the CoD tards (everyone with an xbox on my facebook friends list) start posting status on how they'll sell their xbox etc.

Developers won't be getting shit really, just the fag ass head of Activision and shit. I hope he dies a most horrible death

Patcher is a fucking cock sucker. He needs to go focus on his stupid cloud gaming shit and stfu. I also doubt this would bring the developers any more money, if anything it would lose them a shit ton of money. I mean honestly, how many people who play CoD right now would PAY TO PLAY it? Not fucking me, and I'm huge into CoD more so than a lot of people who play (Have it on Xbox and PC). I dont buy games that don't have multiplayer because once I beat it I usually wont go back and play it later. The casual people aren't gonna pay to play, and a lot of the hardcore gamers would be pissed off and refuse to play.

That's fine if they wanna charge for it, but if they do they're going to need to bring more to the table than they have been. I'm sure a million other FPS's will keep free online play. COD isn't that special, least not to me.

This has been said before, more than once and has yet to happen.

I think this will hurt developers. Once the game is complete and released, the company is making their money and don't really need these guys, therefore can let most (if not all) of them go, maybe keeping 2 guys to make a map or something. If you are paying $60 for a game, then $10-$15 for the priviledge to play online, you'll be less likely to buy another game at $60 and then $10-$15 for online, therefore less new development.

Fewer new games will be released. FFXIV is finally coming out now, after FFXI has been on the market for years. Activision releases Modern Warfare 3, then doesn't really need to release another game until PS4/Xbox3 comes out. Every 5-6 subscribers paying $10-$15 covers the cost of 1 unit sold, and after server/maintenance costs, the rest is company profit.

And while this will be a success from the profit side for big companies like Activision, EA, even Sony & Microsoft it they choose to as well, smaller companies that wish to adopt the monthly fee model will be S.O.L., having to compete for those dollars vs. the bigger companies who have their players locked in. I'm mean how many people do you know that pay for FFXI, WoW, LoTR, and Everquest at the same time? That's only 4 games. Most console owners have at least 3 or 4 games they like to play online. Are they going to pay almost $45-$60 a month to play their 3-4 games and then buy your game to play with the other 5 people that decided to pay in?, hell no.

I think the big companies will end up cannibalizing their own business eventually, and this is one of the steps towards that.

Call of Duty Multiplayer Always Free
Activision has "no plans" to charge gamers to play multiplayer.
July 19, 2010
by Jim Reilly

Whether or not Activision ultimately decides to introduce a subscription-based service for its Call of Duty titles, fans will be pleased to know they won't have to pay to play multiplayer matches, at least for now.

A purported YouTube video surfaced last night that showed a possible membership program was in the works for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Addressing the video, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling said the 'Modern Warfare 2 Membership' menu shown was an error and that there will never be 'pay-to-play' Call of Duty multiplayer.

"To be clear: There is not, and will never be, additional fees required to subscribe and play Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer," he said on his blog.

"The video above seems to show a user on what appears to be the Xbox Live Gold Membership renewal page via the Marketplace in the guide, but while in-game in Modern Warfare 2 (which is in error)," he added. "It does not however, prove a pay-to-play subscription model is in the works for Modern Warfare 2, because no such plan exists for this or any other Call of Duty (including the upcoming Black Ops)."

"That said, feel free to cease freaking out."

Treyarch community manager Josh Olin addressed the rumors saying Call of Duty: Black Ops will also be free to play online. "No, you will not have to 'Pay to Play' multiplayer either," he said. "Rumor -> Squashed."

Activision issued a statement to IGN further reinforcing what Bowling and Olin had stated, saying the company has no plans to charge for online multiplayer.

"Reports of a subscription membership in Modern Warfare 2 are not true," a spokesperson said. " Activision has no plans to charge gamers to play Call of Duty multiplayer."

This news comes just days after industry analyst Michael Pachter preached that publishers such as Activision need to begin to monetize multiplayer by including subscription fees, starting with Call of Duty: Black Ops this November.

He works with the stockholders in mind. I may not agree with his way of operating the business, but I don't think it's wrong.

Except Activision already made hand over foot when Call of Duty MW2 came out. They made money. They probably see a cut of map-pack download money. No one will go for this which will cause Activision to lose money. Not to mention that PSN/Xbox Live have no dedicated servers. Will the PC version have dedicated servers? Probably not. So how can they charge for an online game with out dedicated servers?
