After extreme difficultly with keeping a stupid NPC alive... I finally acheived one of my long term goals.

:P

PS: The reason this is a flame is because it took us so many tries to get 9-2 done... I was so fustrated...

Oh the zeid fight >_> Meh I wanted to go for fun!!

Congratz

Hehe that sounds almost like my Windy 9-2 except the damn Taru-taru tricked us and attacked the monster he wasn't running for :P and he almost lost his life from that . . .

Why did it take so many tries to beat Zeid? We smoked him first time.

*tip* Elemental Seal Thundaga/Blizzaga3 will knock down all 3 "Shadow Images" in one go. And just have a NIN tank him.

I'm trying to figure out what's hard about keeping Volker alive.

Ajido-Marujido, understandable, there are two enemies, each with significant health and strong attacks, and he spams Ancient Magic (and if he's spamming it at the one you're not currently killing or even perhaps the one you are, he gets hate).

Trion, understandable, there are three enemies. It's not too hard to keep hate off him if you're paying attention, but again the idea applies for if he goes and tries to fight something that the rest of your party isn't fighting (he's rather like your typical nub melee when you get a link). And he uses moderately strong WS too, makes it harder to get hate off him if you didn't notice he was fighting the wrong thing.

But Volker? There's *one* enemy (those shadows die in a snap of the fingers). He uses weak WS. About all you have to do is cure him from AOEs and make sure your mages don't get caught in the Shockwave AOE (less for the damage and more for the fact that it sleeps you).

Congratulations on rank 10, but I'm still seriously baffled about how keeping Volker alive is remotely difficult. Bastok 9-2 is *really* easy. It's 9-1 that's a pain.

Ken from the All By Myself quest could beat Volker. This is just another fight that has been chalked up to "get a black mage." Without a blm, it's a darn hard fight, and this IS bastok's rank 10 mission line, not windy's.

We tried 9-2 around 4 times with no black mage. Volker just kept going down at the drop of a pin. Came back with a blm. Poof. Depressingly uneventful fight after that.

Basically we had no BLM. Had to take out the shadows with WS's or plain melee, which took much of the damage off Zeid. Volker kept dying at the last the second.

Not to mention I DC'D the first time we won...

A regular -ga II will knock out the two Shadows of Rage.

Really, how did Solid Snake steal aggro from you guys? :/

There were a few times where Zeid + Shadows of Rage skillchained Light on me and killed me at least 3 times that way. For the night I died 8 times.

No BLM? Just save TP for the shadows and one-shot them with a WS, or have one melee on shadow duty (WS one, melee the other to death) while everyone else concentrates on Zeid. Even if you do dedicate all your WS to the shadows, killing Zeid purely with melee damage isn't too tough. Just have your backline mages take turns healing while the other rests - Zeid's damage output isn't *that* high, so you can basically keep it up until you run out of time (and you'll win by melee damage long before then).

Doing 9-1 without nukes, *that* would be more of an accomplishment. Between that lovely uberdamaging TP-based AOE (= don't melee it if you don't wanna see it) and the fact that slimes are melee-resistant to begin with ... yar, 9-1 without any BLMs would be much more noteworthy. 9-2 without any BLMs still isn't tough.

Whatever man, we followed those tactics and had plenty of trouble. I think Zeid does a little more damage than you realize.

We tried everything on the 2nd-4th time. We tried saving up tp and all using our AoE weaponskills on the shadows for crying out loud...the shadows hate who zeid hates, and if you kill them by meleeing they just pop right on back up. I don't know how volker died each time--he always finds a way. We'd be fighting one second, perfectly fine then down goes voker at the absolute most random times in the fight.

It was kinda funny and kinda frustrating.

To anyone who goes in w/o a BLM like we did, I think I MAY have something that could be quite helpful...

After you get Zeid down to 1/4 HP, you get a cutscene and Volker joins the fray. However, we always took the 60 seconds you have after the cutscene to rest up and regain as much MP as possible. If you just sit there and don't move towards Zeid, nothing will happen. After about 60 seconds though, Volker will move towards Zeid and you will have to re-engage. The first several times we did this (keep in mind we did have a win on our 3rd try, but Krono DCed and we had some other people who needed this so we had to go more than once anyway) I would use Provoke on Zeid and then Flash. However, I began to notice that Zeid would immediately start the second stage of the fight with Ground Strike and it at least half of the time it would hit Volker even after I provoked. I guess it's kind of like how Goblin Rush will hit whomever the goblin was attacking when he started the WS regardless of whether or not Flash or Provoke went off during the animation. So the last 2 times we went in and won instead of using provoke, I would throw up a flash as soon as Zeid started to move. In the end, this saved Volker about 600-850 HP and we were able to keep him alive much more smoothly.

And for those who ask how Volker could steal hate...Well I spent a good portion of the second stage of each fight kiting Zeid to avoid Blood Weapon and also to keep the AOE sleepga WS off of the mages. Thus, I wasn't gaining a lot of hate from Enmity + Attacks. Also, the fights only lasted long enough for 1 Sentinel timer and 1 Rampart timer. I almost always got to use 2 Defenders though and I would macro in Sword/Shield to use a Shield Bash when I could. I went in with Earth Staff primarily to negate the damage from Zeid's WS and to save the mage MP for Volker. As a 69 PLD, most of Zeid's WS would hit me for an average of about 200-300. Now take all of that and combine it with the fact that for some reason Volker loved use Spirits Within on our runs and you have the reason why I lost hate a few times to Volker. The really frustrating part about the whole thing is that just about every attempt where Volker died, we had Zeid down to just a sliver of HP left and Volker would manage to get himself killed.

All in all, it took us about 4.5 hours to get 8 people Rank 10. I give it up to the Japanese DRG, RDM, WHM, and to Genjuro (THF) for all staying for SO long AFTER our first win (which I was also a part of) to keep trying so that Krono, Flik, and Aldowin (who had to log off before he could get a win) Rank 10 as well.

congrats man...but i don't see why that was so hard, it's 1 person isnt it? and no way could he be harder than 15+ lv 70+ orcs at a time :D followed by 3 more lv 75-80 orcs (Sandy 9-2 BC Fight)

It only gets hard when Zeid pwns your tank with a lvl 3 SC with his shadows >_> Happened to us(and the 2nd pt with us) on first try, but we managed to stop it 2nd time(don't remember how) and kill him. Having lvl 75 smn in both pts helped ^^

I still maintain that the shadows die too fast (BLM or not, you can still melee them or WS them for quick kills, and unless your party is majorly overkill on support so your damage output is way low anyway - which is a problem in its own right - then you'll still have plenty of damage to spare, regardless, for continuing to beat on Zeid) for them to be a concern, unless you deliberately do the foolish thing and simply leave them alive. If they're dead, you're obviously not gonna be level 3 SC'd by them. :P

As for Blood Weapon, does he spam it? If not, then you either blink it, Invincible it, or just suck it up and let him heal himself. Either way it's over and done with, and it's not like it lasts very long to begin with. I don't recall him spamming it when I fought him, but admittedly that was a very long time ago.
