Age of Conan: you may enjoy it, but approach with caution.

I play with Ranpha regularly and we're having a blast with it =]

Been grouping a lot since 30.

I recommend Mirage custom UI. More hotbars and they are smaller. Had several crashes tonight but I updated the drivers on my video card and sound card and in the last hour played I didn't have a crash. Here's hoping that solves that.

They're patching the game twice a week for now until all the bugs are worked out. Monday and Thursdays in the ass hours of the morning, like 4am PDT or something.

Groups now get bonus exp over solo players, on normal and/or elite mobs. Just added that yesterday.

Guild cities are not fully functional yet - you can build em but you won't get the bonuses and can't raid/siege other cities yet. When this is fixed then supposedly belonging to a guild with a city and buildings will give you some uber buffs. I get the impression we're talking permanent aura-style buffs anywhere you go in the world but I cannot confirm.

I dunno what the whinge is about gear. If I fight naked I get my ass handed to me as a conqueror. Stats do effect you, I haven't seen much bonus to stacking STR yet but I have definitely noticed a difference in slash/pierce/blunt invulnerabilities as well as DEF ratings. There is some badass gear out there just not as well known. I just picked up a body piece that gives +110hp... for an offtank at 40 with 2500 base that aint too shabby. Apparently some HNM dropped a body piece with ~500hp and +10 to a bunch of stats.

The big seller for me is the pick-up and drop-off. I know I'mma sound like a WoWfag here but the ability to accomplish something in 30min with constant AFKs really fits my playstyle. When I log into FFXI I am pretty much tied to my chair aside from bathroom breaks etc because it's so dependant on parties. In Conan I can go rape a pillow in the middle of a quest and pick up exactly where I left off because it's mostly soloable. Not to mention the quests are worth doing aside from the story - questing is a very viable alternative to exping on mobs. But camp-style levelling is still an option if you prefer. As a group we can rake in 800-1000xp per kill or do a quest for 4000-15000xp plus money and possibly items. They work out to have a similar time:exp ratio in most cases.

Quests slow down at 30. They say they're adding more 30-50 solo content in an upcoming patch but I think 30 is right around the level you want to start learning how groups work. There are a lot of mechanics to adjust to and re-spec'ing your feats for a group event is a strong component to the randomization and varying play styles.

But fuck all that. You can dance up a storm with your boobies hanging out. I love this game.

If anyone's PvE on Omm, look me up: CmdrFly. PhoenixPimps is planning on building a city there.

When I get my new computer, I will probably be joining you Fly

Sweet, I can give you your wyvern earring back. Fucking reeks of drg though.

I gave you a wyvern earring? lol

I so want this game, but I'd prolly go with Cythe and such :P he's on Deathwhisper, PVP ftw!

Yeah dude, for like 300k off your asking price. I didn't understand why back then but now I know it was because you wanted a special spot on the pillow of love in our AoC cannon tower.

https://staging.qcdn.org/index.php?threads/30975/

lol You are probably right, I wanted a spot just for me :D lol Still a few days off on my rig, so hopefully I will be on soon. Where is a good place to read up on classes and races and stuff? I want to figure out what I want to be ahead of time.

I think theres some job-specific discussion at http://forums.ageofconan.com. I would steer clear of the General Discussion board. I've only been to this site once but apparently GD is littered with the WoWfags complaining how AoC isn't the same as WoW. Durrrrrrrr

I just kinda jumped right in. I haven't seen something as bad as DRG in AoC yet though, so no worries - you can't make that mistake twice.

There are general "categories" (they call em archetypes I think) like soldier, mage, rogue. Within each archetype you have 2-3 specific class/job choices that have specialties like healing mages vs nuke mages etc, but at the same time all mage classes have some common feats/skills.

You can compare to FFXI jobs with some classes. Barbarian is like a THF that can use 2-handed weapons but still seems to shine in spike dmg (massive crits etc), Conqueror is like WAR with some PLD abilities and some DRK abilities but no MP, and so on. Note that the Tempest and Herald jobs are kinda broken right now and will likely be fixed down so if you're planning on either of those, watch closely for class changes in the patches.

The whole reason I love FFXI is because of its extreme complexity, it's difficulty, the questing system (no walls of text for quests), and the endless amount of stuff to do. I never get bored. The only thing WoW impressed me with was the crafting system. I liked it better but I didn't like how easy it was to advance in it. The PVP was okay but I've seen better in other MMOs (and ballista is good enough for me).

I'll try out AoC sometime after it's out of unofficial beta. FFXI was out a year in Japan before it came out in the states, so I knew it would be solid enough for me. Maybe AoC will have a 14 day free trial or a $2 month trial like others do.

I think I am going to be a Priest, th Mitra kind. I stopped at GameStop and took a gander at the strategy guide to see talent trees and such.

I'd like to join next year when the game comes to the 360. I can send lots of dirty PM's if it would help me get a spot. Otherwise i'll just be all alone.

PoMs are pretty badass and can AoE exp their way to 80 practically. Also in high demand for big time guilds.

Funcom announced today that they are encouraging guilds to reach 100 members for some seriously epic sounding pvp content. They are talking about allianced battles of 300 people assaulting legendary battle keeps and shit...the scale sounds crazy. Not sure how I feel about having 100 people in our guild for any reason, but I have no doubts we'll be fielding a team that can compete with the masses.

Should be interesting to see at least. I've got some mixed emotions about where the game is headed atm.

That kind of scale makes it seem team based to the point of a person just being another face in the crowd. I don't really like that. My favorite part of FF was that every thing was a team effort, but every single person could make the difference.

As much as I like being noticed for my deeds, 100 player epic battles sounds amazing. Chances are not everyone will have the same objectives, so while one group assaults the main fortress, one group could be forming a back or side attack and can come at the place from another direction. And imagine if as one of those hundred, you do something that turns the tide of the battle. How would you feel then? lol

Exactly. Think extreme micromanagement, with a council of generals at the helm...or a bunch of noobs running around without any kind of effective strategy. It could go either way, but if Funcom pulls it off, it could be real fun.

I see plenty of rookie guilds plowing through levels with their AoE groups who will absolutely get their shit wrecked once this content is released though.

I didnt mean for it to come off the way it did I'm sorry. I posted that real late and clearly used a poor choice of words.

What I'm trying to say is that unlike typical PvE content where you work hard for x-amount of time, learning an encounter-- and once you do it's pretty much the same thing every time you do it-- this epic scale pvp content will offer an ever-changing environment to which we're going to have to adapt every single time we take the field.

It's a breath of fresh air for guilds who have constantly been grinding content at the bleeding edge for several years is all I'm saying. It's a chance to have to come up with new strategy on the fly, as opposed to learning one and sticking to it. This way the content stays fresh for us and we don't get bored as easily. I didn't mean to sound like I'm better than anyone or our guild is above anyone else, as I know that is not the case.

Edit: I forgot how sensitive people here are to the word "elite". This is a debate I had a long time ago on these boards, but people still seem to take offense to it as if I'm trying to say I'm better than them. Elite, to me, is a playstyle, not a way to distinguish talent or hierarchy. I play often. I play coordinated. I play to win big battles. That, to me, is what I have always called an "elite" style of play. Not really sure where I picked that up from, but in all the games I've played that's what people seem to call the hardcore raider type groups.

I guess for me its just the same as saying that I roleplay as my style of play. /shrug
