Nope, still don't see it, still doesn't look like a horror movie from that commercial. Maybe it's because I'm biased because I've already seen the movie, but it looks more like a suspense/thriller to me. Horror movies are always terribly cliche and poorly acted, neither of which are elements in The Village. Horror flicks always seem to be more pronounced in their advertising as well, I can always tell the different between a commercial for a horror movie and anything else. The fact that the theme of the movie isn't as clear from their advertising, and the fact that it's directed by M. Knight should tell you that this movie could fall into a number of different genre's, and the only way you're gonna find out which one is by going to see it. I remember them doing this same thing with Lady in the Water. I remember watching the commercials for that and one commercial would make me think it's a horror while another 10 minutes later would make me think it's something completely different. Take a look at these two.

The first one gives you the impression it's a suspense/thriller/horror, while the second gives the feeling of....well, I'm not sure, but it's definately not anything like the first one. My point is, I remember thinking when this came out, "I have no idea wtf this movie is about", and M. Knight seems to like it better this way.

You're comparing two completely different movies and marketing campaigns that happened 2-3 years apart. The second of which came AFTER the miserable failure of the first campaign, so of course it's going to be more ambigious. Also, look at the promo that Ravic posted, it's completely playing on ALL of the cliches of horror films. The simple fact is that The Village was marketed as a horror/pyschological thriller to play off the success of The Sixth Sense and Signs, neither of which are true horror films by definition but still scared the hell out of a lot of people.

What the fawk happened to this thread? XD LMao

Something good? :nyam:
loljk

Exc would you mind explaining to me what the fuck Lady in the Water is actually about? The first commercial you showed made it look decent but I don't really have the ambition to actually go out and rent it. All I know is that M. Knight Shamalamadingdong used to tell his kids that story before bed.

Two different movies, but the same director.

Yeah I agree that it was marketed kinda poorly, the ambiance of the advertising was a little off, but I still don't think it looked like a full-blown horror movie. And I don't think people should have been disapointed when it wasn't what they wanted, because you really shouldn't have had much of an opinion going in.

Also, the one Ravic posted didn't look nearly as much like a horror as this one did: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VZBxfntDq3M

Yes, you have to watch it and find out for yourself. And if you don't have the ambition to see it then what do you care what it's about? Just go watch it, it's good.
I will say though that neither trailers are good representatives of what the movie is like.

The problem is that the masses are easily influenced by advertising, which is why it's a multi-billion dollar industry. Also, most of the people who saw the film, and see films in general, either don't want to or are incapable of comprehending movies on more than a superficial level. When they're shown 2-5 second clips of "scary" scenes they have a preconceived idea of what the whole movie is going to be about based on those few seconds of film. Then, when the movie turns out to be much more than that or something radically different than their preconceived ideas, they leave the theatre disappointed and claiming that the movie sucked. Pyschologists all over the world will tell you that first impressions are huge when it comes to how we think about things during and after the fact.

As for The Lady in the Water. It's okay, but definitely the worst of his five major films but that doesn't mean it's a horrible film in my opinion. It's just not on the same level as the previous four. It's actually supposed to be something of a children's story, but definitely not a children's movie and Shyamalan attempts to create his own mythological setting just like Tolkien and Lewis but obviously in a much more compressed way. Paul Giamatti definitely improves the overall quality of the film significantly.

*clears throat* spanish sucks

Shyamalan is the alien in the video, it all makes sense! =O

This is what I have heard from my brother and many of my friends which is why I didn't have any ambition to see the movie. But after you spoke so highly of it Exc it does sound like an alright movie which is why I was asking. All I know is that theres some lady from some "blue world" who is stuck in our world because some wolf thingers are keeping here there or something.

Yeah, but Pan's Labyrinth was a fucking amazing movie :P

That's really all there is to it.

Yeah, but Pan's Labyrinth was a fucking amazing movie :P

I tried watching that, got 20 minutes in and said Fuck this, I'm not reading a movie.

I personally don't mind reading movies if they're worth watching. Pan's Lab was fucking awesome and so was Fearless.
