Allakhazam sold to IGE owners (was: Gilseller history (interesting))

Makes me wonder when somepage.com will go - if it hasn't already

Internet "truths" should be taken with a grain of salt at least.
The IGE Brook Pierce is not the same as the actor, those who say he is are misinformed.

IGE had offered to buy QCDN twice since QCDN started, once early on, and once in Dec 2005 after I took back over, while they do have a lot of cash to throw around, I doubt that Yantis is making 1M/month at IGE, he had sold PA to IGE for a lump sum, and I am sure that the contract did include subsequent employment, but I have a hard time to imagine 1M.

If he gets that, good for him, he certainly was at the right place at the right time.

i like the myspace ige and there history found that funny.

I hope y'never succumb to that stuff, Sculli. You're better than that... =/
Your avatar scares the sh-!t out of me, though.

out of curiousity, how much did they offer you sculli?

$800 the first time, $3000 the second time.

Zam.com seems to indeed be an IGE venture.
I guess fiscal reality finally caught up with Alla, I remember how he opposed Yantis buying out all the EQ community sites and vowed that Alla will never sell out to RMT. At some point people start changing their minds, really makes me wonder how much IGE paid the Alla team, not that we will ever find out.

In practical terms though, IGE owns a lot of sites, and not all feature massive RMT advertising. In one way IGE keeps those sites running so that the players do have a resource to use. Of course they do it to make money, but they are also providing a useful service to the game communities that might otherwise not be there.

I think this post by Alla pretty much sums it up beyond further arguing:

I realize some people are not going to be happy with this, but the fact is that we are now able to do things we just were never able to do before. This gives us the financial backing and stability to really do a great deal for everyone. Before the financial backing for the site was just me. Now it is a well financed corporation. I want our network to always be the first to have new game information. I want to be the destination of choice for anything having to do with any game we cover. There have been many cool things we have discussed doing over the years that we have just not had the ability to do without stretching ourselves too thin. Now we can do all that and more. I have loads of exciting new plans for making your experience even better than before. By adding these new sites to our network, we are gaining resources and flexibility that we have never had before.

I totally sympathize, with more cash to operate QCDN could be much more awesome, which in turn would be better for its users.

So when are you cashing in, Sculli? ^^

Unless 2/3rds of them leave... then its crap of a ite.

I particularly enjoyed reading the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth by players who have vowed to move their posts elsewhere now that Alla has sold out. It saddens me, but I like the info at that site too much to boycott.

Side note: Praise be unto the person who renamed this thread, which I had completely ignored before.

3K is just not enough to make me budge. ;)

To Alla the Alla sites were his full-time employment, paying his bills, health insurance, caring for the family, retirement, etc etc, same with Illa afaik, plus they were paying part time coders such as Danalog to do some of the coding. Add bandwidth and server resource requirements, and you are looking at a whole lot of money that needs to be brought in every single month.

The monetaty cost to run QCDN is currently $1,285/year.
Between the premium subscription, the previously lower hosting cost ($60/month), and adsense I was able to pay for that and hand some of the cash back out in form of contest. Now that we are at $100/month for hosting things do not look as good anymore, but there is enough cash to pay for hosting, so it's all good.

If I had more money, I would hire a programmer that would customize the heck out of vBulletin to make this site really shine. There is a lot that can be done to make the site more userfriendly, more useful in terms of added features, and of course looks (though we should be getting that $250 FFXI themed skin any day now).

I would love to run contest where the rewards are such that they attract more than half a dozen entires and less than 50 votes.

I would love to pay someone to effectivly promote QCDN among other FFXI sites, as well as market it to advertisers.

I would love to put out that Quetzalcoatl Tribune thing monthly, there is any number of things that would either be possible, or would simply work better/more efficiently, if I had cash to throw at it.

Any of those things require major time committments from the people that would be involved. Most everyone is simply not willing to give up that much of their time for essentially nothing, and I don't blame them at all.

Anyway, the point is that a larger operating budget makes things easier on the owner/admin, and often better for the end-user.

Leave to go where?
Sure, some hardcore folks will leave, so what, at 6 million page views a day it doesn't matter much if you lose a couple hundred people. Content wins! 99.99999999% of those who bitch about RMT on QCDN have no problem using somepage, same with alla really, the ideologists will leave, everyone else will enjoy the new and speedy site that provides players with an exceptional collection of resources.

I like QCDN the way it is. Nice and quaint, easy to come to. More of a community than anything. I could never stand the Alla forums because it was full of large amounts of people rambling on about nothing. You're doing a good job Sculli. ^^

I have had a premium account on All for almost 2 years now. I wanted to support the site and be able to use the item lookup and other features. My premium account doesn't expire until november so I guess I'll just wait and see what comes of it. I just hope the don't make it a pay site.

I think the only people that have any sort of right to complain are those with premium accounts and don't want their money going to IGE in any way. But there really isn't anything they can do except cancel their subscriptions and not come back. No need to whine. They might end up liking the site even more in the end.

You should sell qcdn.org and just remake it somewhere new so it in turn screws ige >_>;

everyone always look at ige to be this gil selling power house tht is trying to take over the gaming comunity. Which in all truth they are someone what but there is a silver lining to this. White a company as big as ige they can afford to make the need updates and in all reallity maybe even make the allk site better. Thw rmt add where always there so I dought there will be much change there, Hell maybe they will actually weed some the post and see how much people are hating gilsellers, then agian they can read post to find are secrets.

Try it then.
