Btw, I second the whole laughing at my friends when they screw up bit. And they laugh at me when I do (IT Gorger!). Because the idea is that we should be able to laugh at *ourselves* for our own faults (which, once you get over being annoyed at yourself, are typically at least as funny as someone else's faults), and to not be so insecure that we can't even do that. And as an extension of that, if I'm allowed to laugh at me then my friends are allowed to laugh at me too.
Real friendship is not being 100% saccharinely sweet to you all the time and never telling you anything you don't want to hear. Real friendship is based on trust and honesty (yes, including emotional support, obviously a friend shouldn't phrase their criticism in an extra *hurtful* way), and also about telling you what you *need* to hear.
You're only setting up a friend for disappointment if you go around cheerleading them and telling them they're wonderful in every way, if you know they're not and you could instead be telling them how to improve so they actually *would* be wonderful in every way. If, of course, you and your friend share the same blissful ignorance about your friend's shortcomings, then that's an entirely different story.
