My friend showed me this movie today and we've been talking about it ever since. It's a very thought provoking movie and a very graphic movie but a good one I think. I really don't know what I can say without spoiling but I guess I'll just say it starts off with a woman and man's child dying and kinda goes on later in the movie dealing with that and many many other things. It seems misogynistic at first but thinking deeply on it I don't think it's that simple... I could go on but I don't want to spoil it (and I'm still trying to deduce more about it myself)

though both have spoilers I think

Never heard of it... but im willing to watch any willem dafoe movie. ^^

You see his penis! :P haw. There's a bit of sex and nudity in it. Not so much that some critics were bitching about I think. Cause they weren't long scenes or much. And only two or three very graphic scenes but also short.

Is this currently out? Or is it pending cinema release?

It's been out since July far as I know. It's on some sites somewhere but dunno if it's ok for me to post those links (well at least the 1 link my friend sent me). Not sure if it's a legal online movie or not XD

Watched it. Couldn't say I was impressed that much though :/

I think they were just really trying to shock people that it kind of got annoying.

I did however like the way they edited them talking back and fourth to each other, the way it snipped in and out gave it a sharp feeling. Which was good seeing as it didn't make it feel like it dragged on.

don't look at it so shallowly, there's so much symbolism and meaning behind each scene it's impressive :P look at it artistically.

Symbolism is subjective.

subjective you mean? :P Cause I'd say yes and no... cause there are clear symbols to various religions and stories of human history (mostly Christianity). There's also a lot of psychological aspects to it. Very interesting stuff.. I'll spoiler tag it.

Spoiler:

So the movie starts off with a married couple having sex and their child getting out of their play pen to wander around and such. He sees his parents doing it and the mother sees him briefly while she's climaxing it seems. He plays and falls out of the window cause of poor balance due to something revealed later, the shoes he's been wearing for a year or so have been put on wrong causing some deformation.

So from the scene alone there's a lot in the movie harking back to it. The woman's constant desire for sex with her husband is a way for her to get over her grief of losing her son far as I can see. Since it was the last time she saw him, she wants to get as close to that moment subconscious and consciously as she can.

There's other things, the animals/acorns falling a lot in the movie. Reminds her further of her poor child falling to his death.

It goes on though, to something even more. The movie might seem, at first, to be a couple getting over the death of their child and it is but more so. And then others look at it like it's a misogynistic movie. Possible, but I think there's far more. The movie seems to have a lot about how women have been subjugated by the male society and mind for so many years. The wife is proof coming to believe that women are evil, when she comes to agree with the research she was trying to prove was wrong. A subtle and deep guilt and a feeling of shame for so much men have put on women. Claiming to be the reason humans are no longer in paradise (Adam and Eve, remember this forest is called Eden).

Ironically though, nature in this movie isn't the peaceful majestic scene people usually paint nature. True its got green but there's falling dying trees, acorns falling and crying (in her mind), animals are eating their own young (which is something they do in real life at times and even deities in ancient religions did), etc. Ironically, nature isn't their paradise. Funny cause the bridge they cross, kinda takes them from their paradise, the life they had, into the woods where it's "satan's church" and things go horribly wrong.

And even more, as her husband, a psychologist, is trying to control her more and more with psychological techniques generally created by men and their logical ways, she becomes more and more out of control.

I think the director/creator kinda has some cynicism towards modern psychological techniques with a wish that people would give Freud more attention. Since Freud often looked a lot at dreams and them being deeper and this movie has a LOT of going from dream to reality between the two.

There's a LOT of symbolism in this movie, my friend and I were talking about it and she pointed out to me how the umm milstone thing that the wife eventually attaches to the husband's leg, that's an old biblical (or maybe not biblical but something in our past) punishment. Well let me quote what she said "A millstone around one's neck is a Biblical metaphor meaning a burden or large inconvenience one has to endure. The millstone in the story would have had Biblical connotations for the readers of the Grimms' days, especially as the verse Luke 17:2 says that anyone who causes a child to sin would be better off being thrown into the sea with a millstone about his neck; both refer to a millstone as a punishment for those who harm the young and innocent." Interesting how I think the wife eventually blames the man for the death of her child cause men are the sexual ones or something.

Also, the title is interesting.. what does it mean by Antichrist? I've read other say "anti-savior" so the husband ends up being an anti-savior to his wife. I've heard others claim it's women in general cause the female symbol is in the title. Others still, and something I kinda agree with say that the antichrist is God-man himself which is personified by the husband/psychiatrist whose culture in history has sacrificed generations of women and implanting women a rooted sense of guilt and self-loathing. This kinda makes the end more sense and a lot of the movie more sense.

But I don't think that's it cause it kinda implies that it's a misandry themed thing. I think it's kinda a misanthropy movie. Both sides have fucked up and caused suffering to each. And I think the end is kinda a warning to both in a way. More to men, maybe, but the women at the end who are coming at him in that eerie kinda way, are they vengeful or redeemed? The movie never says or even shows any intentions from them. I kinda think that the movie is giving a warning of things need to improve for both sides cause there's still a chance for it to be redemption or be vengeful.

I don't think I organized my thoughts or transitions well, I'm too tired to care now but that's the jist of it :P there's a lot of interesting things to analyze in this movie. It's a good artistic movie, but definitely shocking.

I don't like browsing internet on my PS3, because it exposes my heavy reliance on Firefox's spellchecker. But I must for the week.
Thanks for the correction, though.

I study media and am almost an art student. I saw these messages, almost like metaphors. I just wasn't all that impressed by it, it just got kind of annoying on how much they felt they had to show. I wasn't shocked by it, hell the internet made it hard for me to be shocked by almost anything and I feel it's a good film it just didn't appeal to me. I really thought it would, it's a shame it didn't. I'll watch it again because my friend wants to see it with me, hopefully a second viewing might change my opinion.
