AoC Or WAR?

No experience with AoC, but I've played WAR for a month or so and then quit. WAR had quite a bit of potential but the push to release it early before Wrath came out left a lot of bugs in it. The game was fun but honestly not the best investment and if you like PvE content then it's not the game for you at all. The PvP would be better if there were multiple scenarios available instead of one at a time on the server.

Save your money or go with WoW since it's far more stable and if you got crackhead friends playing (lolTidy) then it makes the game even better.

Also this actually does happen.

Most of WAR's servers have decent population balance. The game is far from dead, since people are out crashing the servers every week by putting too many people in too small a space. Public quests did, however, wind up being something that you have to organize to do. So what? Coming from this game, that should be a trivial matter for just about anyone who leveled jobs other than WHM, RDM, BRD, or COR.

The game's problems? PVE content is a little lacking, obviously, since it wasn't really an area that the developers wanted to focus on overmuch. RVR content is sufficient, for the most part, but can become tedious if you're grinding the same zones over and over again trying to reach the enemies' city. Class balance isn't that bad, all things considered, though some jobs are substantially better at their intended purpose than others (Witch Elf vs Witch Hunter, for example, and from what I've seen lately, Squig Herder vs Shadow Warrior).

The issue with large-scale combat remains somewhat troubling for a lot of people. Since the Pick Lock ability is apparently disabled (allows select classes to pass through the postern gates of keeps/fortresses without having to break down the outer door), a lot of melee DPS classes have nothing to do when attacking a keep other than beat on the door, which is fairly dull and often an invitation to die.

People who want small-scale combat will typically be disappointed, since outside of scenarios, whoever has the biggest zerg is usually carrying the field. I expect Mythic will take steps to address that at some point, with further instanced RVR content, but they may not. The game was designed around open RVR, after all, and it wasn't overly surprising when people started concentrating on certain servers that combat would devolve to zerg vs zerg. Tactics and strategy still play a part, of course, but most people are too lazy to bother.

For us on Monolith, the most horribly imbalanced high-pop core rules server in the entire game, there's a certain irony to all the Destro players who are utterly desperate for individual recognition, but roll with the zerg almost exclusively.

Server stability is improving all the time, content is getting added, and on the whole the game keeps improving to live up to its potential. Now if they'll just address the population imbalance, we'll all be a lot happier.

You might want to look into Everquest 2. It's actually a really good game.. the PVP is awesome, too, but you sometimes have to watch out for the level 14 twinks that can roll you when you're like level 30 if you aren't geared properly. They've got a demo you can download, as well. I'd recommend that if you aren't going to go with WoW.

EQ2 plays similarly to WoW, now.

I wouldn't go with any of the two.

I've heard nothing but bad things about AoC, but have not played it personally.

I have been playing WAR since the release but lately have had little to no interest to play it. I've gone over a week now without logging in and am most likely going to be canceling my account soon. I play on the same server as Raesvelg and aggree with everything he said 100%. WAR has the potential to be a great game but instead of going for what DaoC had, and being unique, just tried to be a crappy Warcraft knock off (in terms of trying to be everything instead of focusing on something) with horrible PvE and one sided PvP. As an Order player I can give you this advise if you want to pick up WAR. Play Destruction. It's like the I win easy button of this game, because there is no point in playing Order if you want to do end game.

Or just carefully choose a server with a good population balance (Like Ungrim, iirc) and experience some fairly balanced PVP that is probably quite nice, albeit largely zerg on zerg action.

Reya get a little fired up sometimes. On most servers, it's not an instant death sentence to play Order, just a few, and they can be avoided. The danger, of course, is that Mythic won't fix the problems, but instead allow paid transfers off, at which point some poor servers are going to get swamped with our Destro uber-alliances, while most of our Order players will have quit already.

I played AOC and like everyone else I didn't like it very much. My friend is playing WAR right now and he likes it, but I don't think he has done that much inside of the game to really make a good judgment call.

DARKFALL looks promising though. Should release by the end of the month

AoC's still the only one with awesome boobs right out of the box.

They should let destruction players swap for a same ranked/geared Order mirror. There's a surprisingly large amount of destruction people that would do it.

I'm playing an Engi atm in T2. Destruction have every keep, but every night without fail we get a warband or two together and take one back, the destruction zerg comes but we hold them off till about midnight when everyone goes to bed. It's so much more fun than being part of the Destruction zerg and only getting to hit an Order player once (if you're lucky) before they die.

IMO, they should've made it impossible to outlevel a tier by getting PVP EXP for your last experience point.

Pretty much, yeah. That and I found Tier 2 the most enjoyable.

Yeah Tier 2 is ace. Taking it slow with this Engi, got my gold bag for T2 the other night which was nice, shame my Shaman and Chosen in T4 can't get a gold bag to save their lives. Keeping RR capped at my Rank is so much easier when spending half my time doing oRvR.
