Atheism

Quick question, do you believe in ghost? Seriously here, a Halloween horror tale type ghost.

That's the answer I needed, not "yes" to make a Bible crack at you like you assumed. Your religion doesn't make you a canidate for beliving in "strange" things and the paranormal... that's just being a fuckin' out there person. Anyway, off junk aside, lotta ghostly things in the Bible, eh?

The Bible and other religious texts is responsible for the spread of literacy in the middle ages. It was also the reason that the earliest forms of mass printing were created. While I'm not a strong follower of religion, its presence did lead to necessary innovation.

Really, everyone has their own religious beliefs. Many base theirs on the major religions, but their beliefs are never -exactly- the same as someone else's. One example is many think Jesus was black (because, considering where he's from, wouldn't he be?), while many do not. Reasonably, it doesn't matter what color/height/weight/voicetone (Jesus voiced by Barry White?! Mmmhmm) someone is, but I do think it's truely terrible that some make such a big deal over someone else's beliefs being even slightly different. These people wind up throwing away their own lives just to try to get others to stray from theirs. =/

There's not really such a thing as no religion either, since by saying you believe there's no god and such you're simply saying your religious beliefs are a godless one. Just my opinion though. I personally celebrate Christmas, so I suppose one could say I'm Christian, but I also believe in reincarnation as well as other things from multiple religions.

I was born and raised a Christian, as was my fiance. However, after we both started to grow and mature a bit more, we suddenly realized "Why should we let some invisible, possibly non-existant entity govern our entire lives?" We basically just stopped believing in a God and/or following a religion. We just don't see the point in it. I do, however, have respect for those who do follow a religion, thats fine with me. Just don't go around shoving it down peoples throats.

Ghosts can be defined a number of ways, be they malevolent spectres or peaceful spirits. Hell, they could be a fuckin' sheet. I think Ex's just asking for what you consider a ghost to be.

My great uncle is a christian, and he once showed me pictures of his spirit guides, told me about a couple of his past lives, and believes that aliens exist and come not from outer space, but from the earth's core (and that the earth is hollow, all space missions were and are faked, and several other such things)

I consider myself to be an ex-christian, though not an atheist. Too many major points in sermons rubbed me the wrong way.

1 - Revelations was a bunch of stories by the early christians about how the evil roman empire that persecuted them would get their come-uppings.

2 - There was no hell before Jesus came along, then Jesus says anyone that follows him won't perish, but have everlasting life. All of a sudden if you don't follow him you're going to hell.

3 - Along the lines of hell, combine it with god being all knowing. If both are true, then he created all those people that are/have gone to hell knowing they would before they were brought into existance. Do I really want to worship a god that creates people to spend a blink of time with free will then be tortured for etertinity?

This one made me giggle a little. Atheism is an absence of religion; it's not an alternative. There's no systematized method of non-worship (except maybe for the Unitarian Universalists).

Well as i said i dont really have a problem with religions as much as i have a problem with what gets done in the name of religion... Suicide bombings, the inquizition, crusades, genocide etc..

However there are certian things within pretty much every religion that bother me..

Lets start with the easy ones and move on to the harder ones...

Scientology ~ a religion started by a guy who was a Science fiction writer before he was a religious figure ... seems like a winner.

Mormonism ~ a guy was spoken to by god and given gold tablets to translate into english for the world but then the tablets were lost before anyone else saw them and ... oh yea they said that he could have multiple wives and live in utah after being kicked out of a bunch of other states for being a cult.

Judaism ~ No comment... i feel bad for the guys... WW2 and all

Islam ~ Go kill yourself in the name of allah and you will get 72 virgin wives and get to live in paradise. Also you need to pray like clockwork and in a certian direction.. it doesnt work if your pointing the wrong direction

Hinduism ~ there are lots of gods (none of which u can see) worship them all. Oh and no matter how tasty cows are dont eat them... They be sacred

Buddhism ~ havent really studied it enough to make a real judgement but in my experience it seems like more of a philosophy and less of an im right your wrong kinda thing

And last but not least my former religion ... Christianity

The world is flat god is above you the devil is below you... but the world is round ... i meant metaphorically

Or the whole thing with there being a limbo for unbaptised kids for idk 2000 years and then the pope decides other wise and now there is no limbo.

Also what is the fate of all the people who were born before jesus came about they just screwed.. or the animals.. do they go to heaven .. and if so can they go to hell for being bad. How do you determine if an animal is supposed to go to heaven or hell. Better yet do trees go to heaven they are living? What makes me any different than a monkey... is it because i can talk.. no parrots can be taught how to talk.. is it because i have sex for pleasure rather than procreation.. nope dolphins do that.

The reason i believe in nothing is because all religions have holes and i would rather believe in nothing rather than believe in something blindly. Which is more likely that some ... spirit i guess called god created everything and then decided not to touch it and let everyone who believes in him come up and watch after they die or perhaps earth just got lucky and the right compounds mixed together and over time via enough trial and error we became what we are.

And finally if god was real why do some people get royally boned by life.. i mean i have it great i was born in a good home with very little concern for money... does god have it out for poor african kids who were born into countries where there are more guns than groceries.

Once again just my opinion ... take it with a grain of salt like you should take life.

Heh. I finally started surfing through that EvilBible site. Their Top Tens Signs You're A Fundamentalist Christian made me smile, especially #10: "You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours."

One thing that never fails to make me laugh out loud is when I hear Christians complain about being persecuted for their beliefs in the United States. Christians (or at least, people who profess to be Christians; actual milage may vary) are an overwhelming majority in this country.

WorldNetDaily usually has at least one breathless, pearl-clutching article a day about some Christian being persecuted, although when I read the story it's not so much that they were persecuted as much as they weren't treated like they have all the answers.

People getting arrested and jailed for trying to sneak Bibles into Communist countries are being persecuted. The Christian having a fit because the checkout girl says "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" is not.

I must have misunderstood the meaning of the word then. I always thought that Atheism meant disbelieving in any god-like figure, but that one could still follow some of the ceremonies taken by a religion despite that? But I guess that's contradictory, so yeh, sorry.

I, for one, celebrate Christmas...though only out of my own nerdish knowledge that Saint Nicholas was a real person, and the holiday does for the most part bring out cheer in people. I don't celebrate, nor believe in most any of the rest of the Christian religion, so I'm unsure if you'd consider me to be Christian or not, since I believe in just that one thing, and actually believe bits of other religions...but do I believe in gods? Not too sure. So I dunno if I'd be considered Christian, Atheist or Polytheist, really.

I may be wrong about the Nicholas thing, granted I read a fabrication on where he was born around 300A.D. and such. If I'm wrong, oh well, y'know? We all celebrate our own things. I mean I personally like to celebrate the Blood Moon even though virtually no one even knows what that is.

I celebrate Christmas, but mostly in a secular "spirit of good will" sense and because I like getting gifts as much as the next guy. I have an angel on my tree instead of a star; it's a holdover from my youth, a family tradition I keep up without placing any religious significance on it.

That's the mainstream misinterpretation of Islam. Muslim extremists aren't following the word of the Holy Qur'an. Also, the 72 virgins bit is usually interpreted in the way that if you live your life properly then you'll be rewarded in the afterlife. I've yet to meet a Muslim who follows that word from word, just like I have yet to find a Christian who thinks people should be put to death in the name of God if they don't rest on Sunday.

That's a pure whitewash statement. They're following their interpretation of their holy writings; just because they're the minority of Muslims doesn't mean they're not doing what they think their book says. That's like saying Fred Phelps and his yokels from the Westboro Baptist Church aren't "following the Bible" with their rabid hatred of gay people.

Ok I am Athiest and I don't consider myself an utter prick like that. I vieiw religion with a good deal of suspicion/contempt/and a splash of pitty. Kinda like one of the kid who sees his friends still believe in Santa come middle school. Except that the most advent believers have been the decision makers for way to long of a period of time.

That being said you can cherry pick all sorts of wonderful quotes from any holy book and they say all sorts of delightful things.
