I was doing my normal daily routine of looking at the newly posted digg articles and it seemed like today was bash Islam day. Many people the comments were posting cherry-picked quotes out of context from the Holy Qur'an. It seemed as though anyone who disagreed with the hate toward the religion was dugg down. Now, I know you can easily do that with the Bible as well, so I decided to do a quick search for cherry-picked quotes taken out of context from the Bible and within a few seconds, I found a whole damn website dedicated to it.

http://www.evilbible.com

You might not have guessed but this whole site is full of atheists. I jumped over to the forum to make a quick thank you for a good reference site and then I get bashed by atheists for not hating the Bible.

http://www.evilbible.com/wforum/viewtopic.php?p=48148 (I tried to be nice. I suppose I could have tried harder. =/ )

It seems to me that some of the people that have replied to me are exactly what they claim to hate (ignorant and intolerant).

How many atheists are on QCDN? Do you all feel the same way as these people? I'm curious about atheism. I thought it was simply unbelieving in religion. I didn't think so many of them had such a hatred for religion. What does everything else think about this?

Atheism is merely not believing in, nothing more and nothing less. Hating all religions is just grossly ignorant bigotry. Not believing in the sayings of stories of a religion is one thing, going out of the way to scream at how it's wrong and "evil" is badly crossing a line. That site seems like the kindof people that'd publicly set up a cross and burn it down just to make an effort to prove their point.

people will always cling to their beliefs, no matter how incoherent or ignorant. How can people say a book is flawed? Thats got to be one of the most hilarious things ive ever heard.

Why not just say the Harry Potter books are flawed, (or if its because the bible is written after true happenings and such) why dont they say any history novels/text's are flawed?

Theyre just totally ignorant. (not because of what they believe, but because of their logic behind what they believe.) They only call it flawed because it does not say what they WANT it to say. Basically it.

But really, religion can be argued in circles... I see this thread becoming VERY large in the near future, and moved to the flameboard

Wow i was just reading the thread, those guys are intense, and insane. If you dont want to believe in anything, thats fine, but dont go and attack someone who has different views. You werent enforcing your views on them, they should not have done so to you. Your right, they are what they preach against, they are ignorant and hypocritical (sp). Good job standing your ground.

So let me get this straight... you went to a site called EVILBIBLE and are surprised the atheists treated you like a rabid squirrel for saying there are some nice aspects? Hehe. What did you think would happen on a site where atheists blow off steam about religion?

Most atheists I know are very polite about it and have a very live-and-let-live attitude toward people of faith; however, when you get us alone in a room together where we don't have to play nice about trying to respect someone's belief in an invisible man says he loves everyone but condemns huge swathes of them to eternal damnation for not spending all their time trying to please him... it's a whole different story.

I didn't figure they'd attack me for not hating something. I can understand if they hate it but all I did was state my opinion on the book and bam. Unless the name of the site is fuckyou.com or wehateeveryone.com, I expect to be treated like a human being. The first person that replied did just that.

I don't think it matters what you believe in, there will always be those people that will become offensive of anyone that doesn't believe in the same things they do.
Even when you take a "higher power" out of the equation people will still act the same.

I don't really wanna get into a whole debate on religion, as I do that with my RL friends enough. What I will say, is that it is very valid to argue points against the Bible due to the numerous contradicting statements within it. If it really was dictated by god, why would there be errors?

That being said, all religions are useful to people, it all depends on the needs of the community in which they occur. Attacking religion itself is pointless, when what needs to be attacked is the fact that almost all religions have a penalty for not being a member. The Christian church, for example, condemns all those who have had the chance to accept Jesus Christ as their lord and savior, and deny him, to hell. Now, suppose you grew up in a community that was Muslim, you probably wouldn't believe in that statement, but should Christianity be the correct religion, you're going to hell just because of where you were brought up. I find that to be against the purpose of religion.

I personally am agnostic. This basically means that I do believe in a higher power, but I am not following a doctrine of faith. My reasoning for this is, if you live a good life, you shouldn't be punished for your upbringing, place of birth, or choice of god. I live my life by a moral code which I find acceptable, not by one that was written over two thousand years ago. Condemn me for it? No sweat off my back. At least I can rest assured I'm making the most out of life while I live it.

Agreed, there will always be radicals for any kind of believe, whether it be religion, race, war, anything where there are more than 1 side, there will always be those few that are radical. The people who believe so strongly in something and want to enforce it on other people, are ignorant and thats what u got yourself into.

Lol... "Eternal damnation"...lol.....

Edit: Ive thought about this subject from time to time, i dont really know what i believe in, if anything at all, maybe because im young at this point in my life i dont really care about religion or anything of the sort. (Might be sounding harsher then intended). I just live my life the way i want to live it, i think im a good person and i have and will have a fulfilling life, and idk if at this point of my life i need religion to help me live a good life. I guess im catholic but i dont agree with everything, i dont practice it, so i dont really know.

....I don't think what you said and the word "tolerant" match up....

lol what i mean is.. not all the stuff that i read i would agree with, more like, some of the stuff in regards to atheist or religion wise. But normally, i'll just tolerate other peoples views even if they are extreme in my context.
PS: The thread on "Any ex-christians here?" is pretty interesting :D

Well... i am an atheist .. i guess i dont believe in anything except that when i die i am gonna be worm food.

As far as how i feel about other religions i dont really care either way what they do.

Religion exists for one purpose to take up to 10% of your income and convine people who believe things blindly that they are going to go to a better place when they die and that they should be good here because of that.

i guess thats just my opinion tho

favorite quote btw...

Organized religion is a crutch and a sham for the weak minded.

This is true in some cases... But youve also got to consider the many different branches that there are...

Basically, what is in the Bible has never been proven true, but it has also never been proven false. But, one of the key things is, the book is here and has been here for (reportedly) thousands of years, and several of the events in the Bible have been proven as fact by writings from those time periods.

It just chalks it down to what you choose. I am religious and I believe what I will, and Ill tell people what I believe, but I wont force anything onto anyone. One thing that pisses me off about this, (just saying I believe in God and a life after death) is that Im automatically a target to atheist's, and get their shit thrown at me lol. Just for saying "I believe." I know I shouldnt let it get to me, but you know, some things you cant help. Almost nothing pisses me off more than being called an idiot for believing in God. And now Im bracing myself for some comments :p

I'm a monotheist personally, and if you wanna know what I believe flat out, I believe that all other religions other than mine are wrong*. Sounds harsh I know, but it's what I believe. Don't take this wrong though, I have great respect for everyone's religion, and I treat with the respect they deserve. I also don't go around screaming at people and invading other's lives telling them that if they don't believe what I believe they're doomed for all eternity. If you wanna believe somethin other than me, that's cool, go right ahead, I'm not gonna judge ya for it, just cause we don't agree doesn't mean we can't get along. As long as you're not hurting anyone else, do w/e you want with your life. My philosophy is: you can't teach people if they don't wanna learn, and most people nowadays just don't wanna hear it. If you ask I'll be happy to tell you, otherwise I'll keep my comments to myself and respect your beliefs.

*By the way...what I mean by that, is the basis of Christianity. There are so many different takes and denominations, and I don't give a shit about all that. I think that as long as you believe a few basic fundamental principles, you'll be good, the details don't really matter.
Frankly most "Christians" nowadays are totally warped. They're either: ignorant, hypocritical, judgemental, and most times all of the above, all things that the Bible preaches against. I can see why the world today doesn't want anything to do with Christianity, it's because most are stuck-up assholes. Not saying all, just most.

I think too that alot of the time they take the Bible out of context, or interpret it wrong, saying it means this when it really means this. I don't think God is some twisted stuck-up sitting on His high horse looking down at us and passing judgement, dreaming about fire and brimstone. I think he's a pretty laid back guy, more like a hippy. If you look at the Bible he only ever got real pissed off once in his entire life, and it was justified, that's a pretty good record last time I checked. Every other time he encounters someone doing something bad He doesn't take a whip to em, he talks to them with respect and understanding. He doesn't go around rebuking everyone who doesn't follow Him, like so many "Christians" these days do.
I can talk alot more about this, I love talking about religion and exchaning viewpoints, but I'll end it now before I get too long-winded >.>;

Quick question, do you believe in ghost? Seriously here, a Halloween horror tale type ghost.

I agree with Excalibr, but a little differently. I do believe my religion is the correct religion because I am expected to read and study the Bible myself and interperet it myself. I am not told what to believe, or how to believe it. I am encouraged to look over the text myself, make my own conclusions, and correct myself later on after I find my own mistakes.

I dont mean to start war here, but Catholicism has a habit of changing the bible, and putting what they want in it, so it isnt as it was meant to be viewed. Since a very large percentage of americans (and people across the world) are catholic, I can kind of see why atheists have this hatred toward religious people.
