Auction House Cutting

It's pretty hard to overbid unless you rush and/or don't notice the big window popping up saying ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO BID 9,325,125 gil on the rabbit hide!?

I lower my prices because if I don't I'll just get undercut.

Whatever the reason is: You undercut because you want to or have to...It just is, because that is the nature of the system.

I think if the adjustment you mentioned is made, it will solve one problem, but will create a pretty boring auction system.

I guess that's just opinion, but the system is what it is. IF it ever changes we'll still all be in the same boat.

The only thing I see wrong (and should be fixed) is when someone over-bids, the seller gets all the gil.

It's an auction. There is no such thing as overbidding--I may be willing to pay a good deal more than the going rate just to get an item quicker, and how is an automated system to differentiate between that or me just making a typo, or whatever?

The same goes for Bazaar items as well.

You can only pay what seller is asking for in Bazaars. Or did you mean that AH sales should be more like Bazaars?

That brings up another thing--if you think the system of bids is unfair or whatever, you do have the option of putting things up for sale in a bazaar or selling to NPCs. There are tradeoffs there too, of course--a bazaar might take a while, might not have enough exposure, etc., and of course NPCs tend to buy for much lower than people at the AH are willing to pay. One thing I do wish SE had implemented was a "bazaar" option in the search function--so that you could get a list of the people who have a bazaar up in the area you're in.

I don't really care how entertaining the AH is. It's not like it's too easy at any other point of the money making adventure, I don't really need a system that promoted screwing each other over at the very end to make all previous efforts in vain.

It's a buyers market. c'est la vie. I always have plenty of crap to sell and not enough slots. I undercut a bit to keep them moving. :D

I made a mistake about the bazaar thing.

What I mean is, say the "normal rate" of something is 10k. I list mine for 5k. Now, someone comes along and bids 10k. My item will sell first and, I will get the full 10k, yet I only wanted 5k for it. This is what gets exploited. In fairness to everyone, the seller should get what he lists and the buyer should only have to pay that rate.

Exactly.

Oh...Screw them before they screw you.

I always move product. But if the price falls too low, I farm and sell something else. Others will too, reducing supply. The price will stabalize, and you can go back to farming the old stuff again.

Meh, I don't see what the deal is really. No one is really screwing anyone at last second. There's no timer on the sales, just how many are currently for sale. I would agree with you if there was a way to see that there was 5 minutes left on an auction and THEN people switched their prices to undercut. But that's not how it works.

I think it's fair, and gosh darnit, I like it.

If something is listed for 5k and someone pays 10k, that's just their fault. God knows why they'd do it.

If they meant to pay 5k, but they accidentally paid 50k. You could see that would be a mistake. They just toggled over more than they should have and they were careless to the point that they even blew past the "are you sure" part.

The only thing of debate there is a moral issue. Do you give them 45k in change? I would if it were a clear mistake...God knows I make a good enough killing off manipulating the AH.
MUWAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!!!

Why?
I don't even know. Look, I was just trying to sound smart and it backfired on me! DAMN IT!

Screw everyone! I am moving to China to sell gil.

Your not making a market really for the buyers because the price isn't actually lowering. You simply frusterate potential sellers. Hence... less compeition and prices raise.

Edit: To clarify...
it's like, you run a shop that sell tires for 50.00. Someone else acxross the street sells for 49.99. A customer goes into your shop to buy your item for $50, but automatically that >50.00< goes to the shop across the street.

How is that a buyer's market? If it was a buyer's market, they'd get the lower price by being forced to buy whoever put it up as lower. Anyway you spin it, it doesn't help the buyer. It just pisses off sellers.

Free trade.
It's working out just fine for me.

But it's not free trade. It's similar in many ways but in truth it's just a queue system where people throw items in, an amount offered and THE SYSTEM determines whose sale is rightfully whose sale.

Calling a questioning of the system a question of free trade is confusing the issue. In free trade there'd be nothing but bazaars and no 25% tax to use them, and then a complex system to find the items you want.

What you accept when you use the auction house is more convieniance for less freedom. I am just addressing what I see in it as an exploit. Plain and simple.

I guess my point is that saying a sale is rightfully yours or anyone elses is just BS. It's like calling someone a kill stealer.

The system is the system. It works properly. The choices are leave it the way it is, or change it ultimately making it more bland.

Fairness is there. I don't see that it's not.
Everyone has the same rights, and freedom to bid what they want and price how they see fit.

Adjust...Adapt. And don't put all your eggs in one basket.
I'm really not seeing ANY problem with the system.
You make your points well, but I don't see what you want out of it.
Everything is fair. If it isn't, please tell me how it isn't fair.

Regardless of oh I don't like this, or oh I don't like that about it, what is actually not fair?

What's not fair is a person puts a price up, the price is bid, yet the sale is interupted by someone with a lower price, who gets the same amount regardless.

The system is what it is, and playing the way we play now is adapting, which I have done. Is the system flawed and therefore fundalmentally wrong, yes I think so.
An argument of "This is the way it is, so that makes it fair." Doesn't really have any relevance to me. The entire point of my argument is that said system is inferior therefore that statement doesn't really argue against any of my points it merely promotes... um..complancency.
Hell, there >could< be a system where you and the other sellers play rock papers scissors for the sale, but it is the way it is. It's not the end of the world that the system is this way, but I think it could be better. Because if everyone having the ability to undercut each other is fairness, to hell with it.

Meh, well it's still actually fair, because no one can "steal" your sale at last minute. And everyone has the same ability to price how they want and bid what they choose. It's complete freedom, and it is fairly realistic.

You make a lot of good points, but I still don't see that it's flawed. Other systems seem to be even worse. Balls even, as could be said.

Everything seems hunky dory. Why doesn't it work for you, Fire?
If you consistently see that people steal your sales at last minute, why don't you price lower to begin with and ensure that you don't have this problem?

I am not unsuccessful with the Auction House as it is. And I do price my items to undercut other bidders, and it seems to work out ok for me getting the sale. As for me getting a good price out of the item.. it's so so. I simply got frusterated for several months and then surrendered and joined the hoardes of undercutters. The assumption that just because I am unhappy with the system means I haven't adapted to it is incorrect. What could make the system more fair?

1) Alter the queue system as described.
2) Modify bid to lowest needed when sale goes to someone who has put it up less than the bid.
3) Display the cheapest product for bidders to reference before bidding.

Because now that I think about it, if you follow my tire shop example. What's really going on is, you're selling for 50.00, the guy across the street is selling for 49.94, but... his price is a secret. They go in to buy from you and he grabs the 50 bucks, never telling anyone how much would have been a low enough bid.
That is the truth of what our AH is. If you consider that fair... eh, you got a strange sense of fair.
