I somewhat recently got windows media center and now I'm using the xbox360 as an extender to play videos off of my computer. .wmv files work great but I have .avi files that I'm trying to convert to .wmv files so that the media center will regonize it but im having trouble figuring out how to do that. Right now I'm using windows media encoder x64 bit edition with the k-lite codec installed but I keep getting errors about missing codecs and therefore I can't convert the file. I also tried using transcode 360 but I get an "unable to queue files for transcoding" error or something like that. I've spent hours reading guides on both issues but I've come to no conclusion. I even tried using windows movie maker but it only plays sound and the video screen is blank. Its reading as an audio file only. I'm not really familar with all this codec stuff but if anyone who has gotten this to work and can help me out it would really be appricated.

hmm i only used transcode 360 for media center, You should check and see if the location for your file buffering has adequate space if not change the folder you want it to buffer in, And or change the amount of data you want it to allow to buffer at once.

Also, do you know that the 360 itself reads AVI/DIVX/XVID now since the recent update?
This does not count for media center though, media center still needs to transcode sadly.

but if you wanna do it the other way download TVversity for free, Install it on your PC and throw all the videos you wanna watch into it, Run the server for tversity and then go to the same blade on your dashboard that shows the media center logo and click Video, Press X to choose your video source and you should see something that relates your your PC and says Tversity, Click that, go to my videos, should work just fine.
if you do not have the optional update yet it will say you need to update to play this file and then it lets you download it.
I had to do this recently when my media center would no longer connect for some reason, just say contacting forever lol.
And media center has been nothing but a headache that i had to figure out what was wrong with it at least once a month or more.
So far...Tversity, Faster buffer...better picture...no problems!

I used TVtonic but not TVversity. TVtonic is pretty touchy though. Sometimes it locks up or just takes awhile to load. It only streams live TV shows though. I don't think it lets me use my own videos. I'll explore that and see what happens. Transcode 360 I don't know that much about so I never played with any of the buffering. Maybe I'll try that as a last resort. Thanks for the help.

Well I couldn't get TVersity to show up on my xbox. I have the server running but nothing appears on the system blade except for my PC. I click on that and it only shows the folders I have setup on my hardrive. Has nothing to do with TVersity. I thought I added the port but maybe I did something wrong. I opened TVersity and went to media playback device in the settings tab and set it to detect Xbox360 and still had no luck.

Buuut anyways I downloaded that optional update you mentioned and everything is playing fine now after setting it to share with my PC. I may not need TVersity after all though I may keep it for transcoding files. After months of playing with this its finally working :).

awesome! glad that worked for you! i bashed my head in and lost sleep for about 4 days over that issue not long ago before i got that update! lol
