Bad Red Mages?

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that lvling rdm first teaches you more about the game then just about any other job. you know what just about every job needs cause you can give it to them.

you learn why nin's and melee's need haste because they rely on you for it.

you know just how often you would need refresh playing any other mage job because you've been the one they bugged the hell out of for it. :P

and if you get into it rdm can teach you about soloing too.

only thing rdm cant teach you about melee jobs is the equipment they wear.

Rdm was a recent job I just spent alot of time on, it was very versatile and taught me the importance of mp management in partys since many times I would be sole healer. Its all a matter of fitting the needs of your current party as best you can.

I've been in some crazy party set-ups too, sometimes there isnt a dedicated tank job out there and the team works with what they can, its the adaptability of the job that makes it so much fun, you could be doing any number of tasks in many different set ups really. :)

I try, but I definitely prefer not to be main heal. Like when I first started on Colibris, I pretty much didn't bother with enfeebles, they died so fast and nothing would stick anyway. After a level and a few more points in enfeeble skill, I could land stuff better.

If you're main healing, it usually means there are no other healers in the party. If that's the case, feel free to ask melee to all sub NIN if they have not already. A ninja subjob will allow melee to cast utsusemi to negate a fair chunk of attacks meaning less MP consumed and less of a burden on you. The overall objective of an experience party is to maximize experience or merits per hour making it more fruitful for everyone and subbing other jobs such as WAR or SAM can provide for higher amounts of damage meaning quicker kills, but it can also cause you to expend a fair amount of MP healing them. That's why it's been my preference to have players that already have NIN main or sub or are willing to sub it for the benefit of the group. This applies to more than just experience as well.

I leveled RDM to see if it was actually hard, because I've always had RDMs whine that they can't do everything. I learned for myself that it's very easy and while meriting as RDM at Greater Colibri I could read a book.

- Most common exp party subs are WHM and BLM, if you plan to use RDM endgame, you need NIN and DRK no question about it.
- Dia II exp monsters as soon as they come in range, not Bio. If anyone is casting Bio, tell them to stop.
- Landing Slow and Paralyze with high potency (MND) for non-colibri is important
- You are expected to haste melee constantly and consistently. But if you are the only healer w/o BRD or COR, you will not be hasting melee.
- Don't bother nuking. I have full elemental merits, Novio Earing, etc and it's just is not worth the MP.
- The best way to manage refresh and haste order is to start from the top of the party list and work your way down. You do not need haste on yourself if you spread out the casts far enough. Also, what's the point of hasting a turtle PLD/WAR? Their damage output is going to be horrible regardless and they aren't using shadows, the only thing they would benefit from is Flash recast timer. But what's the point if battles should not last longer than one minute (two Flash casts)? And If you aren't a ban windower plugins fembot, try Yarnball.dll, it gives you the time remaining on haste/refresh on each person.

If you want to go "a step further," I've seen many RDMs pull hate in a lot of cases. To counter this, I macro in a lot of enmity- gear for heavy cures and dispel. I usually carry the Raven head and body pieces and work around that for a curing set.

Adding to this:

Dia II will not be overwritten by Bio. Bio II will, though. Dia < Bio < Dia II < Bio II is the order of overwrite, so having Dia II + Bio I is perfectly acceptable.

Also, what's the point of hasting a turtle PLD/WAR? Their damage output is going to be horrible regardless and they aren't using shadows, the only thing they would benefit from is Flash recast timer.
Cure recast. If a Paladin is only using Flash to generate hate, that's a bad, bad Paladin.

Protip: Mithra RDMs are all the "rage."

OH! Oh, is this the point where we stop being helpful to the OP and argue over which job deserves which spell more?

Haste will remove roughly 1 sec on Cure recast, so Cure recast isn't really a good reason. Flash recast is a much better reason, as it allows PLD's to get a volatile hate boost more often. Either way, its a matter of preference. It won't really help PLD's as much as it helps NIN's, as a PLD generally do not deal a lot of damage. If the PLD is subbing WAR, a rule of thumb I follow is to put him last on the haste cycle, simply because he's not as important as the other melees, as Haste won't help him as much as it helps the others.

I'd still recommend giving it to him if you have the MP to support it, though. Hence why I said it is usually better to let the WHM haste the tank rather then the RDM.

Hopefully not. Although given normal trends, Page 3 is generally when it happens in GT.

I really don't have anything else to add for Red Mage seeing as mine is on the low end.

Whimsey, I'm sure you're doing fine.

Flash recast is not a good reason. Mobs should not be lasting longer than a minute, letalone 45 seconds.

What exp party are you getting the MP to cast Cure IV (88 MP) faster than the base recast timer of eight seconds?

Flash is 45s, with haste it's 39s~. If battles are lasting longer than twice the casting time (39s x 2 = 78s), then you need better DDs or stop hasting the PLD/WAR and haste real DDs.

I was gonna add that as well, but then I realized a lot of parties pre-75 just plain out suck. And flash is hellova better reason then cutting off like 1 sec of Cure :P

really it's not hard as an elf to keep haste on everyone but myself(don't really need it...), the question is unfortunately and not in an offensive way...

why invite a pld? If you invite them expect to haste them to help make up for the lowend of the damage scale since it does help a little bit, if you invite a dd job you should haste them as well to increase the damage scale and exp/hr.

it's easy to keep haste on 4-5 people and keep a party going if you do it right...

fixed for accuracy.

IMO
Good RDM: one that keep all mages refreshed and melees hasted
Bad RDM: one that refuse to refresh my PLD after i asked multiple times and he is the only other person with MP in party, and rejoice when he found out leader got a NIN to replace me.
