Be nice to your baristas

When we ordered our food, he didn't ask us if we wanted an appetizer or drinks. We ate our food with water

every server/waitress I worked with in the restaurants I worked with always had a predisposition about people (particularly teenagers or college students) who order water with their meals only.

Oh, we wanted drinks. In my head I couldn't decide between pineapple juice or apple juice, personally.

i think you missed the "didn't ask for our drink orders" part... unless i'm wrong i think the implication was that the waiter didn't get them drinks :/

That's why.

Can't speak for Stine, but every server/waitress I worked with in the restaurants I worked with always had a predisposition about people (particularly teenagers or college students) who order water with their meals only. The predisposition is that they will not tip well regardless of service given.

I didn't judge people by if they just ordered water with their meal. I didn't like the people who would come in groups of 5, order just water, ask, "These chips are free right?" and then proceed to only order an appetizer if anything. I pretty much treated every table equally unless they started to be a dick to me. I will go out on a limb and say that people who sat in the smoking section and/or ordered alcohol generally tipped better.

EDIT Blue it does sound like you had a crappy waiter. They are supposed to at least offer you drinks by name anything but water.

Well, fuck it then. Some servers are real assholes and have that predisposition about anyone between the ages of 16-38.

Burn 'em all, I says.

i always tip 20%... even more if they were spectacular, less only if they really deserved less. but i'm one to order water with dinner simply because if i'm thirsty i need water to hydrate lol. it's silly to think that way but i'm sure there really is a correlation. it'd be interesting if somebody studied the tipping habits based on age, gender, race, etc. as well as tips correlating with what they ordered etc.

Yes yes, pardon me for being young and full of life! :drinks:

and see, this goes back to what i really wanted to say in the begining. is it impossible for ppl to treat every individual as such, and not make predetermined judgements before they know anything about them? if somebody leaves a bad tip, the next time you can know that they've done so and keep that in mind. but if somebody orders water, you don't know what kind of tip they'll leave!

Personally, my favorite tipping practice includes laying down a large stack of singles on the table just upon being seated, and prior to being greeted by the waitress.

The dialogue will go like this:
Waitress - "Thanks for visiting Bennigan's, my name is Ashley, and I'll be taking care of you today."
Me -- "Hi there Ashley, I'm Tristam. I see you noticed my stack of singles on the table there. That represents your 'tip in a state of flux'. Right now, it represents the tip I'd give you based upon 25% of what I will order. As your service degrades, I will remove one or more bills from the stack, and if it improves I will subsequently add bills to it. The size of the stack you get at the end of the night depends entirely on you. Now, I'll have a Coca-cola to start."

the above was written entirely out of sarcasm and should not be remotely attributed to my restaurant tipping practices. While I believe in tipping based on performance, and have not tipped because of BLATANTLY bad service before, I normally tip well. Stine tips damn good no matter what generally.

In my own experience here is what I found but there are always exceptions:

Teenagers who don't work and are by themselves - tip poorly mainly because they don't have a job and don't know how it is.

College students - really varies from what I saw. Again if they don't work, they tip poorly. Some might try to be less of a hassle if they can't tip you more but most will try to tip you decently.

Families - Depends on who is tipping. Generally the women tipped less especially if their husband seemed to think you were cute. Also, where I lived the women seem to think that everyone owns them something and that they are to be worshiped.

Couples - Generally I had good experiences with couples unless they were teenagers. The guys would usually pay and wouldn't want to seem cheap to their date. Although if they were fighting, you're probably not going to get a great tip unless they make up. You probably don't want to be at the table much if they are fighting anyway. They may try to pull you into the arguement.

Free-loaders - Usually you can tell them by their attitude before they sit down. They order just water and will order something whether it is expensive or not can complain about it until they get it for free. Don't look for tips from these people.

Smokers/Drinkers - Usually pretty laid back and love to chat. Usually great tippers.

Regulars - Usually tip well and they should! If your server knows you by name and can guess what you're going to order, tip them!!!!!!!!!! If not you might soon find that the server's section "is full" when they greet you at the door.

I tip pretty generously because I can afford to and I know how it is.

I haven't commented in here yet, but my barista is like ... my Jesus lol I order the same coffee every morning, basically same exact time every day. Even though their thousands of customers a day, they remember my drink and I love them for that lol See, coffee is my crack, so I don't mind spending extra on it. Even though I am only spending $5 on my actual purchase, I always throw them $10 just for being them.

Both of these are me lol I have even tipped horrible service 20% because I know their job isn't easy, so something must have ticked them off.

yup... 84 = epic fail. and most CT drivers do indeed suck. there are a few (myself included i hope) who know how to drive. and i constantly yell at my mother if she's driving like she's from CT. it's horrible. in my town in particular we have the "Simsbury Rolling Stop" which is where people sortof maybe kinda think about slowing down at stop signs? but not really, and then go blazing through a busy residential area at 50 mph anywho!

yup. fail.

The few random times I get a very attractive waitress/ server (pc fuck you w/e) I'd leave them a tip but don't think it would be acceptable in a family restaurant....
