Best Defense Food for PLD

I see...

I didn't do the airship fight that way either...and I also walked 2 miles uphill to and from school in the snow.

Because it's just aggro, as long as the tank does no action towards them (i.e. Job Ability/Spell/engage), no amount of healing towards the "tank" will generate hate. So the tank can happily sit there while getting shit slapped on his face and get cure bombed by multiple mages without worrying about hate.

Wait, what? I swear we tried this on one of the CoP fights and I ended up dead for curing the "tank". The one with the three mammets.

this method works well for mammets on airship very easy to do,i was designated meatshield many times for this lol

Holy shit Skreb. You feeling ok? You used a comma!

If any action is generated towards them that is directed on them, it will generate hate.

Sometimes I use Sentinel on PLD/BST if I aggro BEFORE pulling (with pet). The moment my pet hits the mob, all hate is on the pet. I come off "free".

Just to note, before I made that "claim" I went and tested it. I purposely went and aggroed a goblin outside Batallia. My method to aggro was to /rest in front of them. I'm not sure how the game mechanics work, but I got up, used Sentinel and then put my pet on the goblin (a bird). 2 other goblins in the camp fire also linked and attacked me. It took a few hits for the bird to get hate, I'm unsure why, but as I didn't aggro them naturally and via resting only, I might have racked up some indirect hate there?

As the goblin died, I used all my job abilities, barring Invincible and then put my bird on one of the linked goblins, which stole hate right away.

I'll need verification from others as to why I got hate like that initially, maybe it was from resting? I'm quite sure that when I naturally aggroed it I have 0 hate.

I thought it was already proven that resting generates hate, that's why when you are doing long fights mages can pull aggro by just resting. I have a feeling that is why your bird took more hits to pull the initial goblin off of you, but was fine with the rest of them. It would be a good test to go somewhere there are EP's and just agro them and do the same thing.

I do like the new term that was defined for me today. Super Tank, lol.

I just did all those BC's with kiting and never had any trouble, but i guess that was just lucky. We didn't know about these confangled ways back then.

Ah, I was aware that resting generates hate while in battle, but I never considered/thought that it would generate hate to "rest aggro". Guess I learnt something new. I'm sure that I take no hate if I aggro naturally, i.e. in Sky on them dolls* in the wall, aggro, Sentinel, dash off to find bird, charm bird, put bird on doll. Rest/wait/join in with no hate.

*Note: I don't aggro them but sometimes I autorun into them by accident if I suddenly need to AFK somewhere.

so after i sight aggro them, as long i dont use direct moves such as flash, provoke, shield bash and stuff, i can use sentinel, rampart, and other self buff moves without messing up the enmity?

Right as long as you don't do anything to "claim" the mob... then mages can cure you hate free.

spaghetti pescatora gives you the best of both worlds, HP and DEF, its not as much HP as carb, but you do get 150 HP and 65 DEF. Carbonara's HP boost caps at 175 HP, and Tavnazian tacos give capped 150 def, and 20hp/mp. Personally I would say go with the pescatora since as a PLD if I don't want to die often or at all (ie. BC fights) I go with that food since HP>DEF (in most cases). Now... if you plan on dying alot and getting RR'd I just eat Fish Mithkabobs. But yeah for DM I would say go with HP+, they're gonna hurt you no matter what you get your def too. By the way do NOT eat Turtle soup, I just looked at it lol, 4 DEX 6 VIT and 10% HP is pretty much worthless, sorry Jya.

Turtle soup isn't worthless... If it was it wouldn't cost 20k a pop.

It is used for HP builds, which you can get alot more HP off of a soup than off of pasta... Pending your HP. If your HP is above 1500 then soup gives you more HP than the pesca. If you are eatting carbs instead of defense food you would be foolish. And if you are using Mithkabobs above level 50... that is kinda not a good idea either. I used Turtle soup when I had to tank Bahamut V1 as an example when the Gigaflare can one shot you if you don't have enough HP. So i beg to differ when saying that Turtle or Stamina soup are worthless. Galkas especially get alot of use off of turtle soup, if HP is a deciding factor. 2000+ easily, with 10% boost= sexy. I believe stamina soup gives 12% if im not mistaken.

Personally in a fight where Def and Vit do not matter really... I'd go with straight HP, especially if the person is super tanking 4 AA's. There are only 2 things that can give HP boost of over 175. That is a Carb, or soup.

I wonder how long til SE fixes this SuperTank method

Yep, you just sit there and take the beating. You can use your job abilities to help you survive. The mages can cure bomb you without any hate issues. Not even a Benediction will pull any of the AA's off of you.

yeah I was thinking they put a cap % on the soup but it seems they did not, yeah its good food since no HP cap. you are correct sir.

Also: In before lolAlla. That article (though rare) was actually incredibly useful.

Alla isn't that lolsy, you can get a lot of good information from the job specific forums because most of the regulars are resourceful. But I agree there's a lot of parts I avoid like the plague(general forum, endgame forum, etc), since timewarps to PLD/WAR hurt my head. But the mead hall is definitely my favourite place though

Bah, what's the fun of exploiting poorly constructed game mechanics?

Anyway.

Soup for pure HP, Carb/Pesc for something that anticipates the possibility that you'll die but you still want HP, Tacos for any normal straight tanking situation if you feel you have enough HP and you're /WAR for Defender, and Dorados for those /NIN situations where you don't think you'll be able to hold hate.

Like everything, it's situational. The best DEFENSE food, of course, is Tacos.

Ignore this. I super tank DM in 5 minutes with Taco and going /blu. Def is 999. Decent gear and good mages is all you need.

EDIT: My tanking party is always 3x WHM, 1x BRD 1x RDM. The last 12 can be anything and you can win in the 30 min limit. Just make sure you get into a niche in the stairs so that knockback from the Hume doesn't put you out of mage range. Also make sure your mages DO NOT rest within sight of you if they need to. I never drop below 700 hp with this tank party setup. It's at 1400 and change. GL.

Jyak, I used Taco in that fight as well. And I remember you taking more damage than me...

I just wanted to reiterate and post again how much your mage support matters in supertanking DM. If your mages can't deliver the cures steadily and consistently, no food will save you. If you want a walkthrough of how my group did it, I'd be more than happy to share. I can also send you a list of the gear I used.

Avilas, Mikata, Bourdainer, Dani, Brydan, Zaanba, Kaete, Duckman, Kaley, Artielange... can all probably tell you how much they thought it would fail and then how surprised they were at the ease of doing it by supertanking it.

Anyways, either way... good luck. Its a fun solo tank.

If you used a taco and jyak used the soup, wouldn't he obviously take more damage than you? I also thought it was pretty much a given that defense doesn't do anywhere near as much good as more HP would. While you doing as well as you did is good and all, more hp would be a lot more helpful to a group just beginning to do the BC before everyone knows what they have to do.
