Best Defense Food for PLD

thanks for the infomations, can you send me the gears that you recommend for the PLD?

I dunno make, in all honesty it is whatever the tank is comfortable with. And his/her gear to back it.

If you have any/all end game gear I'd wear that. I cant really tell you what to do with the AA as well as someone who has supertanked it, because I have never done it before. I've only BLM/RDM/ and SMN AA.

Personal experience anything that can boost your survivability over hate would be a plus. You wont need MP you wont need hate... Just things that will overall boost your chance at surviving 2 more seconds.

HP+ > MDB (until BLM dead) > DMG reduction gear > Def = VIT

As a fellow PLD, I'd recommend not doing this strategy...it's one of the most fun fights in the game, and using an exploit saddens me. Good luck nonetheless.

well, we short on tank/kiter i believe, so thats why we will try this way.

Yeh. Supertanking, from what I understand and read from others, is "aggroing" all the mobs and make them all beat on you.

Because it's just aggro, as long as the tank does no action towards them (i.e. Job Ability/Spell/engage), no amount of healing towards the "tank" will generate hate. So the tank can happily sit there while getting shit slapped on his face and get cure bombed by multiple mages without worrying about hate.

Apparently a useful strategy for the CoP airship fight, against the initial 5 mammets. But I haven't had the opportunity to do it yet so I am unsure how well it will work in that situation, but I think it'll work considerably worst vs the AAs because well.... I assume they hit hard and fast and multiple times/skillchain/weaponskills/2 hours and what not.
That method of tanking worked well in the three paths fight with the Bugbear and four Moblins (5-3L3: A Century of Hardship ) I ran in gained inital agro from the entire lot of them and sucked up damage best I could while my teamates picked off each Moblin and finally the Bugbear.

As far as food I've pretty much used Tav Taco's my entire time as Pld, I did experiment with Menemen which gives HP+30 MP+30 AGI+1 INT-1 ,HP recovered while healing+1, MP recovered while healing+1 just for a boost to Hp/Mp etc.

Just a question, how many rdm/nins does your group have?
The AA's are extremely susseptible to Gravity and Bind and can very easily be "kited" by a red mage.

yeah hp def and - dmg since u wont need enmity whatsoever.

Just 2 RDM's so that throws that out the window.

If you used a taco and jyak used the soup, wouldn't he obviously take more damage than you? I also thought it was pretty much a given that defense doesn't do anywhere near as much good as more HP would. While you doing as well as you did is good and all, more hp would be a lot more helpful to a group just beginning to do the BC before everyone knows what they have to do.

Gigaflare is a magical attack not a physical attack. I was actually using Barfira gear and Jyak knows that. It was more of a inside joke.

Hmm.. indeed, then I'd say go with HP gear and as HP food Like Carbonara as others have suggested.
Def won't do you much good if you don't have enough HP to cover the amount of damage you take.

Taking into account you'll be getting hit by 3 AA's and 2 pets (assuming they won't be slept) HP goes down fast, even if you're being curebombed by several mages.

<3 lol. That fight was definitely fun, most easy as well ^^

Avilas, Mikata, Bourdainer, Dani, Brydan, Zaanba, Kaete, Duckman, Kaley, Artielange... can all probably tell you how much they thought it would fail and then how surprised they were at the ease of doing it by supertanking it.

I never thought it would fail! D:

I agree people been exploiting this fight with manaburns and now this way too much, the fight was awsome back a few years ago, when gear was crappy and we had fewer merits but we had like a real strat, with a mixed group, a healer and tank on each AA, rdms on the pets and DDs going from one to the next, it was hard but probably the most fun I ever had in a single fight.

I really miss coming up with crazy strats where everything must be done perfect and each person has their own job that they have to do right but I understand most people fail when not micromanaged, and now everyone pretty much has at least 2-3 jobs at 75 so you can just make the easy strats work.

I had a lot of fun that way Jakey (with a tank/mage on each AA and DD's moving from Taru > Mithra etc). I remember Mistra filmed our run that way. It's probably still on youtube.

If not I have a copy on my old harddrive.

I personally haven't done Divine Might using this strategy, but why are people against using it? It's not a glitch or exploit, there has been no fundamental change to hate in the game since before NA PC release, meaning hate works as intended to. As far as I'm concerned it's a legit strategy. It's progression; just as PLD/WAR is extinct endgame and PLD/NIN shines.

As for minor DEF vs HP improvements in food comparisons; in all likeliness you're near cap on DEF (assuming you use some kind of DEF food with Defender/Cocoon) and that extra DEF will not matter much.

This is an exploit. Where else in any fighting situation will a mage cure-bombing not pull hate? The reason it doesn't work is an oversight by SE, and requires 0 skill to perform. The reason people are recommending against this has already been discussed:

This is not a progression. PLD/NIN is a situational endgame tank class, whereas PLD/WAR in almost all other party situations is still decidedly better.

Did you miss this while looking at yourself in the mirror?

Maybe I should elaborate more for you. Killing AV using the Justice wall is an exploit. Why? Because SE fixed it shortly after. Using the properties of hate to your advantage is not, especially when SE hasn't changed hate for ages. People are recommending against it because people think the older way is better for some unbeknown reason or they did Divine Might the "harder way" a long time ago and feel others need to do it that way as well. My grandfather used horses, everyone should use horses too because that's how things were. Get with the times.

PLD/NIN is everything and more than PLD/WAR ever was. I would never dare to use /WAR over /NIN for sky gods, sea jailers (except for jol; /RDM), HNM, Assaults, Nyzul, Salvage, Limbus or meriting, there's no reason at all to sub WAR for any those. Awesome, you have Provoke every 30s, but it's a shame you shed hate fast taking hits. Unless of course, /NIN is an exploit and people should do it the old ways just because.

I would never dare to use in most of the situations you listed at all...

Sky gods: Kirin tanked fine /war or /nin, but with zerging the need for pld's is gone
Byakko: I tanked PLD/WAR a couple of weeks ago, it's fine
Suzy: NIN excels
Seiryu: PLD/NIN
Genbu: /WAR or /NIN work, just different strats for each

Sky gods is a wash

HNM:
Vrtra: If not zerging, /war is a sufficient tank. /NIN works as well, but requires more support

Tiamat/Jorm: NIN's are more superior tanks, PLD can do it but I wouldn't choose it if other jobs available. But, you're right, if I did, /nin.

Toau HNM: /nin

Kings: /War for KB, /anything for NQ. /WAR or /NIN for aspid, /anything for nq
Faf/Nid: My favorite HNM to tank...and it's much more efficient with a WAR and NIN dual tank then pld/nins. Were I to use PLD tanks, then sure, /nin.

Other minor zilart HNM's - /war more than sufficient, /nin works, but why?

HNM again, a wash.

Assault:
I haven't seen ONE assault where PLD/NIN would be useful. Not one. In all my assault experience, I've gone PLD TWICE...and it was /war once to hold hate on multiple mobs, /whm on the other so I could erase myself while kiting.

Nyzul: No experience here, you may have me, you may not.

Salvage: We have 4 people with PLD 75 in our Salvage shell, have a very high success rate. Times we've had anyone come PLD: 0 Can't help you here.

Limbus: Ultima / Omega /nin, farming sessions /war (preferably other job)
I'll give you a wash even though a vast majority of the time would be /war.

Meriting: Are you serious? PLD is a leech in merits no matter what the sj. Ultimately geared, a PLD can hold his own with a decently geared Dmg class job, but come on. The majority of invites the majority of the playerbase will get are going to be traditional style parties...and /war.

EXP 1-75: /war

The reason SE can't 'fix' this exploit is because they haven't found a way yet to do it. They want to keep the integrity of proper uses (allowing pets to get hate) but haven't found a way to do that without changing hate altogether. It's an acceptable fact, but still an exploit of game mechanics.
