Best Job to Start?

chicks usually like whm a lot. maybe because they like to help people.

I'd say Warrior or White Mage, simply because she doesn't know what her main job will be, and these two jobs are universal subs of their respective job sets. Whether she likes them in the end won't matter. She'll be levelling one at least no matter what job she chooses and might as well get started while she picks a main.

I think anyone just starting out really ought to start out as Monk.

It's by far the easiest of the starting six to take to 10+ solo, has the simplest function in parties through the dunes, and barely loses anything at all from not having a subjob yet.

It's also fairly easy on gil starting out.

If you start on Warrior, you have to learn to tank and keep a good hate flow once you start partying - which is made a lot more efficient by a monk subjob later down the road.

If you start on Thief. . . Don't start on thief. The only way to be effective solo is to supplement your melee damage with arrows/bolts, which are back breakingly expensive for a starting player. Not only that, but the solo to 15 is an extremely difficult road for THF.

If you start on Red Mage, with a little care, the solo part is fairly easy. With its array of magic, Red Mage can solo to 10 just fine. Once the partying begins, though, it's hard to swallow backing off and just casting/backup healing... putting away the sword for the first time really sucks. Many Red Mages never even learn this important aspect of the job. Then, once subjobs are unlocked, going back and leveling Black and White Mage to sub for Red seems hellish by comparison.

If you start on White Mage, the solo to ~10 will be very brutal. Very little damage output and squishy defense means sticking to much weaker mobs than a Monk or Warrior or Red Mage could take. Not only that, but learning the hate line with curing can be a daunting task for a new player, and will likely result in many deaths.

If you start on Black Mage... see White Mage.

Basically, the absolute best way IMO for a new player to start out and learn how the game works on a fundamental level is to start as a Monk, having the easiest party role through the Dunes, and switch to Warrior subbing Monk once subjobs have been unlocked, allowing the second run through Valkurm to teach hate control through tanking.

I'd suggest mnk for the job to learn the game on, it's the simplest job to play in early levels and for her first party experiences.

QFT

As far as melee jobs go monk is a nice job to use to learn the mechanics of the game early on, it lends itself to being able to pay attention to what everyone else is doing while you're sitting there beating the hell out of whatever.

I think shaunessy has something with taking each one up some and finding your niche, so-to-speak, also.

As far as mages go on learning the game, since this would be her first MMO, your best bet with that would be either blm or rdm as they are not solely responsible for the upkeep of the party's health at all times.

It's one thing to be in the middle of learning how to play Whm, it's another to get blackballed for not being good at it because you're learning .. whms take alot of crap from people in the game over anything from a slight screw-up to next to nothing they had control over.

On a duoing basis i'll tell ya right now a War or monk and a Rdm can own their way to the mid-20s in the right zones.

Just my 2 cents on the learning curve. Hope you guys have a blast :)

Biggest factor. Will you be there to duo with her? (level 1 job with level 1 job) ? If I brought my room mate to XI (I wish) I'd duo with her, and I'd level my pld and she could be whm.
I mean, what's better than doing something you love, with someone you love?
First job? I took war to 13, then the other 5 to 10. I hated blm, I hated thf. I do NOT suggest starting as BLM or THF.
MNK is very easy, you just punch stuff and move on.
WAR is the same as Mnk, just with a Sword (until you can afford an Axe, gogoSE)
WHM wasn't too bad, I didn't die a single time on my time to level 10, but in the dunes my road to 18.. I died and deleveled at LEAST 40 times and I'm not kidding.. I hated whm for this and quit it until just last week. I duo'd with a drg to 19, then turned down Dunes invites till a Qufim and BAM! Less than 6 days I kicked out to level 50...
Rdm was my passion. I solo'd 1-15 in two days, pt'd 15-18 (for sub) then solo'd to 21. You will not put your sword down until Qufim, I don't care how many people think they know what you should do.. in the Dunes a rdm melee's better than it supports unless you have a smn and no whm, then you main heal and smn backup heals.
That's about it :3 I suggest Monk or White Mage first.. both of these have to reach 18 for sub, and as a sub if you wish to use a better job after.
IE: You end up wanting pld? Mnk to 18, war to 37, pld to 75.. You wanna be a smn? Whm to 18, blm to 18, whm to 37, smn to 75!

Fun stuff... I miss not having a sub :/

Advanced job is a VERY big factor, even though you have to reach 30 to get them.
Why?
Say she wanted to play NIN it would be smart to take War to 30 no?
So if she wants to play an advanced job, level that jobs sub job as first job.

Other than that...
War is a good sub job for many jobs, thf is nice for a few, monk isn't really a sj.
Blm, Rdm and Whm are all used for sj.
Think about it in sj terms, that way you dont waste time leveling a job you will never use.

And a war would be better to sub... whm?
*cough*

As far as i am aware warriors only use MNK sub until 30 then go THF + Gaxe and then around 50 or so go NIN + Dual AXE.

Assuming you are playing for the 3rd or 4th time (possibley 10-15th for some people) you will probably hit 30 in about a week.

Also He said its not really used as a subjob...which is true. 12 levels on one job does not really make it a massively used sj, when you consider there are about 3-4 jobs that will use /war pretty much 18-75.

Anyway... Yeah i would go warrior if you want to melee (or hell even if you don't...i tried warrior before i decided on a mage job) and any of the 3 mage jobs really. Whm would make a good sub for other mage jobs, but rdm might be best since you can get a feel of both whm and blm as well as rdm.

I think leveling all 6 jobs to 15 would feel a bit time consuming to someone still new. Having leveled all the jobs out of the dunes or higher except rdm(mnk isn't in my sig but I have it to 24 on a galka mule), I would say monk would be the easiest. Easy to solo, straight forward to xp with at lower levels, can view others. If she does go for mnk, I recommand buying her a hand-to-hand piece with a high DMG rating, and don't worry too much about delay at lower levels. It helps keep the numbers higher than 0-5 per punch which is something I see bad starting monks commit a lot. And also I recommand buying her meat jerky stacks, which are cheap. They're great for melee damage jobs early on.

War is impacted a lot by not having a subjob in my opinion. One would miss out on a bit of vit/defense/hp. And such dunes parties are known to be really ugly sometimes, everybit really helps. The lack of a subjob won't impact whm, blm, and mnk as much in my opinion at lower levels so I'd choose amoug those 3.

Thf is just a pain in general. But if she wants to be a thief, I'd recommand coming back to it after getting a SJ to ease the pain of leveling it. It sucks a ton until 15. And I also recommand using a sword for thief until 30ish(33 mainly) and then switching to dagger.

Some people that tend to like all or most of the jobs, such as me, are going to have a really difficult time picking a main before even experiencing the game. However, after leveling a job to 18ish and being in a few parties, a person will experience for his or herself how the game generally works on a basic level. Once a person sees how the game works, they'll likely have a better idea of what job or jobs he or she wants to do.

I'm just thinking about trying to explain FFXI to a RL friend that has never played the game before. Someone in my LS said his friends call it" FFXI, the forest stimulater". My brothers friends call it "magic bean farmer". Now, we know FFXI is pretty good game or we wouldn't be playing it. But explaining FFXI in all its detail to someone new can be tough.

So in a nutshell, I think getting blm, whm, mnk to 18 would be for a smoother ride, especially blm and mnk as they're not very high pressure jobs starting out. But as far as a main job goes, she's probably best finding out for herself from watching how parties work 10-40. That way you and her won't make a bad choice or pressure her, and she can discover the game and community for herself.

I think it's awsome though you're getting her involved. If you're there making/joining parties with her, that'll probably help her out a lot since she can ask you basic questions. There is a lot to take in from this game at first. My LS has 4 married/soon to be married couples in it, and they seem happy sharing the game together, so good luck.

Thats a good idea. My idea was that I help her with her armor and stuff since I'm a higher Lv.

But thats a good idea. My PLD is 11.. and I can help her with the WHM.

If your going to Duo with her, have her as rdm. A Pld's best friend is a rdm. Then again a whm is always nice to have in any pt :3

Quote for truth.

Just throw her on warrior. Whats the worst that could happen?

I figured whm, since you have a main heal, and a tank... the two rarest jobs till 41.. You can PT without refresh, you can't PT without a tank or good healer. :D

I would teach her about aggro. My friend played FFXI for a week. Got to 16 de levled to 10 trying to get from one side of dunes to the other...hasn't played since.

I have pointed out to him how much he sucks because of that, but i would advise you don't scare her off the same way :P.

I would break it down like this.

Mage or Melee.

Mages will inevitably want to start out with whm. It is the default Sub job for all mage classes. That is very important to think about.

Take Whm to 18, then Unlock Sub Job. Switch to Rdm or Blm, take it to 30, then unlock an advanced job. After that, you have a choice of what to do. Lvl whm more using the job you took to 30 as a sub, or unlocking Bard or Smn(Smn not recomended for new players). From there on out, you are a magey Mage.

Melee. Start by taking monk to 18. Then war to 37 using Monk as a Sub. From there, you can do whatever you want as War is a Generic Sub for all melee jobs and accepted by most people in most situations.

There are few jobs that hold exceptions to these rules, and I have no idea where the 3 new jobs fit in because I'm too poor to buy the expansion. But in any case, tell yer woman I said "Lotsa luck, have fun".
