I'll be restarting on QC soon, and i was just wondering where I should start off? I've only ever really played from San d'Oria before, as an Elvaan, purely for the ring. Is it really worth it? As exp seemed to be really slow in the Ronfaure region. I've heard that Windhurst is the best for the initial 'hump' of 10 levels before venturing into Valkurm or wherever. I'll be playing Hume, and i'm wondering if it's really worth starting in Bastok?

Bastok was the place I started in and I was Elvaan, absolotly loved bastok starting area. Easy peasy leveling there, always plenty of mobs. Or there used to be when I played

I've been wandering around Bastok today on Sylph and Alexander. It's less boring than Sandy, just wondering if the ring's worth it? If i started in Sandy, I know what I'd be doing. but it's just so drab.

I know this shouldn't be turned into a debate, but the title insists it be. I personally joined the ranks of San'd Oria as a Hume, mainly because of the CP items and such that included much of what hume's can use efficiently. They have CP items that give ATK, and some with good stats, like the royal footman's trousers at lv 20. I've always been known to go for sandy just because the people I have met from there never seemed arrogant about the nation. Even now that I'm in an all Sandy LS, I never bash other nations unless the bashing has reached me malevolently. Bastok, however, has one of the biggest Nation-only LSes on the server, The Bastokan Elite, and perhaps is well known for bashing other nations, somewhat of a *** of FFXI (not that extreme, but are ethnocentric in a sense). Windurst is also a nice place to start, but personally for me its just way too big to travel around. San d'Oria Is well centered, and getting from point A to point B would be simpler than making a wrong turn in windy and ending up going in a circle. If this is enough grounds to be bashed, I'm sorry I'm stating my opinion.

Levelling outside Bastok gets really depressing unless you like to hang out in quarries...

I'm just looking for honest and open opinions on where i should start =D got a while before Kotsu comes back on with the WP, so i'm trying to plan it carefully and not end up as a constantly missing Elvaan THF/MNK again. I think i'm gonna try RDM this time, but start off on BLM. Or something. I dunno. So i'm looking for MP gear in terms of CP items. Do those Orc mobs spawn outside all the towns as well? They can cause some trouble at lower levels. Well, they did for me. But last time I did it, I was running through 3da. 11 fps a second ftw!

I disagree, I dont believe San d'Oria is well centered, as you stated. It takes a very long time to get to Point A -> B unlike Bastok where it is extremely easy to get around, especially if you turn in an amyrillis (sp?). I always start in bastok, i hate leveling there personally, but it's easiest to get around and I think it's stupid to say one nation is less arogant than another nation, that's hogwash. I'd chose bastok myself as long as you don't mind leveling in boring places, other than that i'd choose Windurst.

IMO: Bastok > Windurst > San d'Oria

Perhaps your search for honest opinions has come to a close. You should not do what others say for you to do, but do what you think is best suitable to your liking. Just because you miss elvaan doesnt mean you exactly have to start in Sandy. Just beyond lv 10 you can get rings that rival, if not excede, the strength (not stat str) of the starting rings.

You might want to do some research on races and jobs to see which adheres to your liking the most. for example, you said you like thf and mnk; personally thf and monk go hand in hand with mithra on most parts solely because of their dex, but if you aren't looking to be a mithra you might want to look towards hume. Elvaans are notorious for lack of accuracy for some jobs, yet if you have an excessive amount of gil at later lvs, you may be able to pull it off again. Your best bet, because they are so well rounded, would be with humes. Im not saying they're the best, but they are best at being able to pull of most jobs successfully. Humes have a dex that can compare to that of mithra, and their MP gauge is second to a taru. They also are able to pull off many different subs for jobs that other races are unable to grasp properly. With such balanced stats, the customizability of pairing jobs is used to its potential. Humes are like the Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to jobs, and I have fun with it because I know that at any second I can switch my job/sub and still be considered a good <insert job name here>. I personally am a Blue mage and I love it. Because Blus are so well rounded, Humes naturally can become the best choice for Blue mages. So I might have turned this into a race arguement, but its an understandable means. Just choose whatever you feel is your niche. Whatever nation grabs you the most, whatever race and job you feel comfortable with, go for it. ^_^ fun is the key word

Uh no? Hands down best race for Monk is Elvaan, then Galka.

The racial accuracy arguement is the one thing I cannot tolerate in the game at all. The difference between races is so small at the low levels, and at 75, the difference is still very, very small.

I see you cut out the rest of my sentence to make my statement invalid. WTG. HP isnt everything, in case you're wondering.

Well, I love Bastok.. I like the industrial look and the city is the easiest to get around, imho.

Plus we're called Lastok for a reason, so your signet lasts extra-specially long on most weeks~ :P

(Also I refused to be San d'orian because I hate bloody bagpipes)

You're proving yourself to be extremely idiot. It's not about the HP. It's about the STR, VIT, and MND. All three, Elvaan excels at over the other races in this regard. But hey, what do I know. I only have Monk at 75 and merited out the ass.

I think hume sounds like the best choice tbh. When I was an Elvaan (under the name Xanegun on QC, you may have seen me running around Dunes a lot.) I had severe accuracy problems, and simply couldn't keep up with the rest of the party's DoT, which was kinda embarrassing because I kept missing. I've only ever played as Melee classes before, and DRG kinda appealed to me, but I was told that I'd have about the same accuracy as Stevie Wonder with a blindfold on. So the Jack of all trades thing'd probably be good for me =]
my only experiences with MMORPGs before FFXI were GW and PSO, and in those games it was a little too build intensive, like paint by numbers sort of thing. I've only ever played on QC before, I love the server, my friend who got me into it's on there sometimes, but I bought myself a WP before i started a new character the other day, and kinda closed the window i'd written it down into. Because I'm the sharpest knife in the rack.

I did quite like the layout of San d'Oria, just soloing around there seemed extremely slow, in my opinion. but then again, i have nothing to compare it against. I did think Northern San d'Oria was a little to empty though, everyone seemed clumped around the auction house, and my x360 disagrees with auction houses quite profusely.

When I get back onto QC, I think i'm gonna try everything out, haha.

Been trying to get on there under my own steam since i got in from work, only ended up on Alexander, Ifrit, Bahamut, Sylph, and... *shudder* Lakshmi.

EDIT: Short version: I'll probably end up in bastok.

Racial accuracy discussions are not too invalid. A Hume DRK will hit more often than a Elvaan DRK no doubt. Its the gear that determines if there is a bigger gap than normal or smaller than normal. Perhaps the arguement is not well suited for your appeal, but it still exists and does persist to have some evidence that without any gear, race does affect accuracy and damage. Maybe job plays a bigger part in accuracy than race, but there is still a margin of differences between races' statistics.

The effect DEX plays on accuracy is extremely minor, to the point it shouldn't be considered a factor. The biggest source of accuracy is skill level. The second, equipment. Third, food. Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiistanct 4th, DEX. The difference in DEX between a 75 Elvaan MNK and a 75 Mithra MNK is about 10, if that. Probably less. That amounts to a whopping 5 accuracy, and when your total accuracy is pushing 400 at most times. Drop in the fucking bucket.

Instead of bashing someone for not being clear the first time, yourself, why not try to show evidence of intelligence from the start rather then having to bring it out in the end? Unless you're willing to dish out the acc for elv, I aggree that it is a substantial race for monk. Galka is a powerhouse for monk, yes, but the entire statement was based on balance and ability to adhere to ALL aspects of his wants and desires in a race/job. Id rather have a hume who can become any job and not have a massive problem with it, than have an elv with high accuracy issues with DRK, or a massive mp lag with galka. Id rather be average than excel in one job and be crappy in another. Just my personal opinion.

A mithra might get to enjoy 1-2% more accuacy than an elvaan because of their dex, but that's not a big deal even at lower levels. The only real difference race plays in the game besides looks(elvaans = stupid looking) and hp/mp is the different stats on RSE gear, which could effect what gear you buy. From a purely stats perspective, Elvaan and Galka are the best options for monk; however that doesn't matter all that much. I've outparsed both elvaan and galkas wearing the same gear as a mithra.

Perhaps I should not be saying this, but a basic race's stats may determine the race's accuracy in the long run. Elv have a low dex, and in turn have low accuracy. It is to my understanding that the BASE of the race's stats determine its overall function, and the additional modifiers added by food/gear to basic stats have a smaller effect. The only way gear adds to the main ability is if its a core ACC modifier or a main Attack modifier. Dex ensures a higher Sneak attack, seeing as he likes thief, so it would only be logical to choose a race who naturally has higher dex.
