Best starting nation?

The mobs are worth more, causing your early leveling experiance to also be profitable. Silks/Fire Crystals/Wild Onions/bee chips are all available <3
Bastok is decent money too. The main problem, though, is that most of it is unstackable. Windy definitely has us (bastok) beat with the silk threads though.. I'd much rather get stackable silk than unstackable quadav backplates and zinc ore any day of the week. We do have fire crystals and beehive chips though.

I like leveling outside of bastok though. Lots of wimpy worms, easy birds, and easy sheep. On my next job, I'll probably level outside of windy though. Just for the silk.

As someone before me said, I hate sandy. The music is just downright annoying (I know, I know. I can turn it off...). I actually held off on leathercrafting for two years simply because I absolutely despise going to sandy. Bastok's music gets old too, but it's not as bad as those damned bagpipes. Windy has probably the most tolerable music, but you definitely need to do that backdoor quest. I still get confused running around windurst.

bastok:
Pros
- best city layout
- easiest level'ing (almost any job can get chain 3 solo between lvl 1-4. worms and bee's juicy exp) also quickest to solo past 10 in k.highlands
- more of the useful blu spells in bastok's 'area' pollen, sandspin, sheep song, head butt

Cons
- Lame scenry
- least profit/useful quests
- always last in conquest :(

sandy:
Pros
- quickest to dunes
- most profitable quests (including tele's)
- best starting ring

Cons
- terrible npc's
- bad level'ing outside town
- xbox breeding zone

Windy
Pros
- Profitable solo leveling
- Most useful gear-wise quests
- easy guilds for crafting

Cons
- Worst City layout
- Most distant from other towns
- Worst starting ring

imho....

Don't forget though that each ring depends on the job you start as. If you want to be a mage then i'd say pick Windurst. If you want to be a melee pick sandy or bastok.

Everyone has his/her own opinion on how each city is better then the others. It's up to you.

Windurst has a great layout if you like the forest type towns.
Sandy has that knights of the round table feel to it's city.
Bastok has that.....i hump my own sister feel to it. JK :P I'm not really sure what bastok was made to look like.

As for easy lvling. Bastok is the best for some fast exp. Windurst has the biggest profit from low lvl lvling. When i first started i made a few 100k off Silk threads. Sandy would have to be the hard mode of lvling.

I don't know much about the story lines for each but if your lazy and hate walking around a huge town then don't pick windurst. God i hate going up those damn stairs every time >.<

But none of us can tell you what to pick. In the end it's up to you, cause you'll be living with the choice that you make.

Oh... another reason i think windurst > all (i'm very proud of my ingame nation, how sad is that).

Bastok > racists

Sandy > Xenophobics

Windy > Diplomatic and equalitarian... to a fault maybe.

Yeah I'll give you this one. Try growing up as a tarutaru in bastok. :P

pick the best that suit you and dont worry about the ring. It not worth it.
Thing to consider

loc.. sandy is really easy to get to and has plenty area around it. windurst is far away and not very accessible, but there is is a gold mine of farming areas.

fame.. sandy is by far easiest place to get fame and has many quest that you can do.

craft- having your craft that you planing do in your home nation help alot because all you have to do is outpost waro and you are at your guild.

conquest- being rdm you may want to start in windurst the conquest item there are very suited to a rdm. also rank 7 magic caster bracelet are very nice hands.

Ive done all 3 nation bastok being my last. With everyone being in the new expansion area bastok does come in secound and even first more then they use to. I myself like sandy the best it easy get to the AH, the warp guy is in a easy loc. Many area around to lvl in, armor storage guy very easy fine as well. Also seem to be more populated then the other 2 citys.

"Windurst > All" in every aspect.

If you aren't with windurst, then you aren't in first place :-)

Elvaan NPCs are rude. Bastok is grey. Windurst is perfect in every way.

i hate windy .. too much green , also i hate all green areas ...

they need to add more desert areas :D

Windurst + silk threads = win! win!

Honestly though, pick whichever city you like best. I personally picked Windy for the storyline missions. The whole summon magic aspect kicks ass!

You might also want to consider which guild you would like to join. It's not so much an issue when you get an airship pass, but if you're big on crafting you might like being able to OP right to the front door of your respective guild :) (well close to it <. <)

Well it sucks to get around to places in, but if I were to restart, I'd pick Windy.

Two reasons...
1. Nice Conquest items for mages (I'm going to switch from San D to Windy to get MC bracelets after bird grows up.)
2. Crawlers to farm while leveling starting jobs and closer to worms in the Maze. I still solo low level jobs in Windy zones for the silk and easier xp mobs.

I consider that a pro, I hate not having access to my "outside area of control" gear. Plus, Longer signet and more CP while I'm there.

Windy = cowards and cheaters(City Mission spoiler).

I agree with what most have said in as much as you should pick a starting nation that most suits your fancy in the game. I've leveled starting jobs in all three nation areas and can honestly say that Bastok has been my favorite for lots of reasons:

Primarily, the city layout is simple. Everything is easy to find, and you don't have to walk ten miles to get somewhere (unlike in Windurst where I spent a couple of dedicated weeks questing for fame and still got lost/confused trying to find npcs and places). Secondly, the exp from 1-10 is bar none the fastest of all nation areas imo, and you have a good range of mobs and areas you can utilize in a relatively small distance. Between South Gustaberg, Dangruf Wadi, and North Gustaberg, each within short walking distance, there is great exp to be had all the way up through level 10 and beyond. I found leveling there to be much less dangerous/argo prone than the Ronfaure/ La Theine areas (if you will be a mage, especially since wind and water elementals like to spawn frequently in La Theine). You also have Zeruhn Mines which I found to be great dc-em exp at very low levels right in Bastok Mines.

Speaking of the mines, Bastok is something to consider in a major way if you intend to craft in Smithing or Goldsmithing. It is the nation most conveniently located among three mines (Zeruhn-Beginner, Palborough-intermediate, Gusgen-advanced) that can carry you well up through job level 50+ and both guilds are located in Bastok Markets.

I enjoyed leveling in the other nation areas as well, but found Windurst areas far too spread out and the mob levels a bit more random (and a lot more irritating with Crawlers' Poison Breath, Cocoon, & Sticky Thread attacks for example). I liked San D'Oria second best in the respect that West/East Ronfaure provided good exp and a good variety of mobs but found that the later end of leveling to 10 was frustrating. I'm not much for leveling on EP after EP for soloing and it seemed to me the mobs toward level ten became either too challenging to solo or required too much resting time afterward for my taste. King Ranperre's Tomb provided a pretty decent way to cover the gap but rather dangerous. About everything that level links.

Both areas were more aesthetically pleasing with waterfalls and greenery compared to Bastok's dry dustiness. But if the ease of leveling is more important than the visual environment, it won't be an issue for you. As for the other nations themselves, I found Windurst to be complicated to navigate and not convenient or efficient in layout and the whole rhyming "feetsie-weetsie" stuff from the NPCs gets old... rather quickly. San D'Oria's NPCs are just flat out rude, and though their layout is better than Windurst's, it still can't compare to the simplicity of Bastok's in my opinion.

One thing I will admit is that if you choose Bastok, you need to be rather dilligent in making supply runs to Outposts when they become available. Some of them, like Sarutabruta, you won't have the opportunity to grab but once in a blue moon. If you're into heavy OP warp usage, San D'Oria may be the better choice. I'd say Windurst also, but Rank 8 mission is a pain in the ass.

Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to give you some specific things to consider. Hope this helps some.

Well, I love Bastok.. I like the industrial look and the city is the easiest to get around, imho.

Plus we're called Lastok for a reason, so your signet lasts extra-specially long on most weeks~ :P

(Also I refused to be San d'orian because I hate bloody bagpipes)

See now that why I am from San D'oria, I love bagpipes, the sweet sweet music of the highlands.... ah almost makes me wish I was elevaan...OH wait I am.... oh wait I do get to hear the music of the highlands.... so to answer your question... Sandy HANDS DOWN.

Huh? Windurst has Ajido and Shantoto, two of the biggest and best in the game hands down. And if I remember correctly from all 3 CS in mission 2-3, Windy was the only CS where the NPC involved didn't run with their tail between their legs. Really don't want to say anymore than that without spoiling anything, but the only person who seemed like a coward was the Star Sybil and that's because she's just a Seer and nothing else.

Dunno about cheaters, but cowards is accurate (although that changes at the end of the mission line) - think about Windurst's relationship to the Yagudo.

The NPCs run away for the Giddeus and Ghelsba dragons. The NPC - that is, Ayame - stays to fight for the Palborough dragon. You'll always see an NPC from some country *other* than your own country for the dragons of course. But it's Bastok who has the NPC who stays.

(Granted, in Sandy's case, the NPCs there are Rochefogne and his friend whose name I can't spell, and they're not really official country representatives the way Semih Lafihna and Ayame are.)

trust me. been there, done that, windy has the best story line hands down. The most opportunities for collecting OP warps you want. unless you want kolshushu >.>; if you start in windurst you can level in giddeu effectively and get a head start on tenshodo fame. necklaces are far more plausible than zinc(which you can get from the worms there as well anyhow) and tenshodo fame is a leg up for gil or playing nin ^^

If you want the easiest nation for rank go bastok. their 9-1 is solo/duo-able and that's the hardest mission they have. bastok is a hole. the area around bastok is a nuclear waste dump.

Sandy has an in depth story line but you're surrounded by snobby elves. Sandy seemed to be a sequence of BC fights. enjoyable but not windurst by any stretch.

Windy ftw. Best looking town, easy leveling, and its biggest selling point: its not san 'doria.

I have a mule in Bastok and its ok, but it gets kinda boring walking around there, and although Windurst is huge and spread-out, I dont mind it, its a nice atmosphere, with a Dhamel Farm/Zoo/area thing.

A list of places I would rather be, from favorite to least favorite:
Windy>Bastok>Stuck between two violent NMs, thirsty for taru blood>the log-out screen>Sandy.

Lol after all this debate, im afraid I must conform with society and accept all arguements. Soon after I use up my CP im gonna change allegience. I have no OP warps so I technically have nothing to lose. I enjoyed the windurst missions thoroughly when I was windurstian at a previous time; they have a more interesting story line. "The deadliest magic ever to exist on earth will be weilded by some tarutaru who plans on destroying the rest of civilization." Just kind of sounded like a true FF story-line. viva-la-revolution!
