Strid: hey sorry to bug you, but i need some info fairly quick
Strid: what socket is your mobo
MetalWayner: holy crap. lemme look
Strid: needa know if it's lga 1155 or lga 2011
MetalWayner: LGA1155
Strid: sweet
Strid: Thanks man, sorry~
MetalWayner: pretty sure, i have the 22nm intel 3rd gen
Strid: alright
MetalWayner: ok, the only i7's that use LGA2011 are the i7 extreme's and the 3820 and 3930's. all other 3rd gen i7's and 2nd i7's run on LGA1155
Strid: ok cool
Strid: someone is building a pc and I couldn't tell if the 3770 needed the 1155 or the 2011
Strid: the intel site calls for it as a 2011 only
Strid: newegg says 1155 is fine
Strid: it even has 1155 in the cpu title
MetalWayner: if they use an LGA1155, make sure it has ivy bridge support or if it's sandy bridge that it's chipset is compatible with ivy bridge
MetalWayner: oh, and tell them unless they are going balls to the wall nuts with water cooling, to save money and get the non-K version of the 3770. i only put my 3770K to 4.0 turbo cuz of OCD, but i haven't done anything yet that even uses more than 40% cpu
Strid: so don't get the K?
MetalWayner: not unless you have water cooling to support it running at 5.0ghz
Strid: ok
MetalWayner: the 3770/3770K do not get beneficial performance gains from OC'ing until the 5.0ghz mark
MetalWayner: and if they really wanna save money, the i5 is basically an i7 w/o hyper-threading. just get one of the fast ones
Strid: he has no budget constraints at all it seems
Strid: i'm wondering about this too, he wants this mobo
Strid:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157329
Strid: generally micro atx mobos are restrictive because they are small, but this one seems to have all the trimmings
Strid: even dual gpu slots
MetalWayner: personally, i wouldn't cuz it's a B79 chipset
MetalWayner: atm, i'm running Z77. i'd prefer Z79
Strid: why?
MetalWayner: Z77/Z79 chipsets were built with Ivy Bridge in mind. they are super fast and have very high data transfer rates.
MetalWayner: and most of Z77/Z79 chipsets come with Ivy Bridge Bios onboard already
Strid: ok
MetalWayner: if i remember right, the B77/B79 chipsets were the enthusiast boards for 2nd gen icores. i did this with mine and asa's pcs. we're both running Z77
Strid: ah
MetalWayner: but if he doesn't have cost restrictions. i'd go X79 chipset with an i7-3930k
Strid: thanks a lot man
MetalWayner: np
MetalWayner: everyone's builing 3rd gen icore rigs lately. lol. twistid is building an i7 system also with his tax refund. i'm waiting for you to jump on the wagon now. lol
Strid: i'm thinking about taking this change I'm looking at and buying an i7 and mobo
Strid: because i'm almost certain, 100% certain
Strid: my cpu is causing a bottleneck between my ram and gpu
MetalWayner: make sure your psu supports icores and u should be g2g. i don't think any of ur parts won't work on either system though
Strid: think my psu is fairly universal
Strid: it's name brand and all
Strid: didn't skimp
MetalWayner: check for icore!
MetalWayner: lol
MetalWayner: trust me, icores watts jump literally, 20-40watts, ever cpu clock
MetalWayner: and when they turbo mode, 1 core locks at max watts while the others keep fluctiating.
