They'll only be considered bad until I play it and show everyone how good they are.
Seriously.
I remember when I first started leveling up Drk in XI and people were like "Wow, you're the first Drk I partied with that didn't suck and get yourself killed." etc. etc. Mind you this was as I was leveling Drk, and I guess a lot of people loved to just stack Soul Eater + Last Resort then do a WS just to pile on dmg and then promptly die like a beyotch because they immediately took aggro and well.. had nothing to defend against the ensuing rape. I saved using my uber buffs for when it was my turn to close a skill chain (like you should as a Drk) and generally wouldn't take too much damage because the ensuing magic burst generally would take out the target. And even then, once I learned exactly what Soul Eater did I generally always cancelled the effect as soon as my WS went off so I wouldn't continue losing HP each time I attacked. I think most starting Drks just left it on to do more dmg.. and get killed, like morons. I dunno, I guess just I played smarter than a lot of others.
I also made myself useful to parties by pulling (with poison) in parties that didn't have a thf or rng throughout most of my leveling experience. I pretty much had to show people that I was worth having, and it paid off in the long run because I would get asked to join folks partying when they saw my shouts. I like to think that was because they knew I wasn't a retard. And then I hit the level when I had to go and level Thf for a sub because people didn't want a Drk/War at a certain point when /Thf could SA and eventually TA for uber leet hate placement skill chains. Ah, the good old days. Pretty much never needed anything but Drk/Thf for exp parties up until 75. And I realized that Sam would make a viable sub, specially once they added Hasso and that other defensive ability that I cant remember (looks it up) Seigan + Third Eye (man I loved that combo.. I even semi tanked Dynamis mobs back in the day with that, was great). I honestly think I touted Drk/Sam before it became the norm and other Drks realized how awesome it was. I mean really, you can gain tp faster for skill chains/weaponskills and effectively tank/negate damage when aggro inevitably came your way. I don't know for certain since I stopped playing in 2008, but to this day I would doubt there's really a better subjob for Drk.
Oh yeah.. almost forgot about effective use of Absorb spells, stun and drains. So very important for survival. Good times, good times.
