Bible Thumpers

Of course, you aren't me, so maybe in that kind of imaginary situation, you really wouldn't say anything. If you can honestly tell me that if I, your Jewish friend, had something anti-semitic said to me within a party after someone found out what I was, you would do nothing about it ... well, I guess your argument holds water.

To me it is an issue of tact. Little is gained from confronting the offender and the best support to be given is to the friend. If I wasn't around when it happened, and some guy came up and called you a "filthy jew" or something along those lines, I would have little to say to the guy, as the moment is over. At this point, my responsability is damage control. I make sure that the situation is as defused as possible.

In respect to the thread's story though, we aren't dealing with racism or bigotry in such crude respects. The discussion that took place may have ended with one person feeling hurt, but this is a matter of religion and not hatred. His beliefs disagree with hers and unless there is some kind of backstory we aren't privy to, she shouldn't be upset by the exchange. The guy doesn't seem all torn up that someone disaggrees with him, why does she?

I feel that the argument was fine and that nothing said in the screenshots was out of the norm for these arguments. HOWEVER my original point was that she should not have gotten involved. It did nothing but make the situation worse, and most anyone can tell from the information given that the conversation was doomed to end the way it did before it started.

When was the last time a fundamentalist christian ever backed down on the topic of homosexuality? It just doesn't happen because their beliefs are based of facts as solid as clouds. Therefor she walked into a conversation knowing it was going to end bad, then came back here and got all huffy over him defending his beliefs.

The equivilent to this situation would be one of us making another thread, about how someone is a dick for not agreeing with us in this thread.

If "God" (if there even is one) didn't want you to be on this planet and find people of the same sex attractive, he wouldn't have put you here.

Well, free will aside, I agree. It's just a chemical reaction anyways. If we're made in god's form, it would be reasonable to assume he's a little gay himself. It's a bit of a non-issue though since he doesn't have a gender.

I like a little debate here and there, but you have to pick your battles. Some people are simply ignorant where gay people are concerned because they think they don't know any. Just be yourself and eventually they realize you're not some crazy boogeyman jumping out of the closet draped in a rainbow flag.

For the crazy Jesus People (there are plenty of reasonable ones, but I'm just talking about the rabid will-not-be-convinced Bible Thumpers), I just say "Fuck 'em" and go about my day. The best revenge is living well, and it depresses some of them when they realize they have no impact in how you live your life.

Like when those wittness come to your door and ask to you to join them then they give you leflets over and over again, you say go away they do not, you swear at them to go away they do not. You then close the door and they put those peices of paper into the letter box, still do not go away. So you put the paper out of the letter box on fire, then they go away :P

Answering the door naked has never failed.

But you see, Biggie, this is EXACTLY what I'm talking about when I compare the situation to an incident of anti-semitism.

By this line of reasoning, just because his bigotry (and it is bigotry) has some basis in religious belief, it is somehow immune from being labelled as such. Because it's dealing with someone being gay, rather than simply black, we (as a culture) are more willing to gently term this fellow's ideas as "his beliefs," giving them exactly the same amount of credibility as Shaidalyn's desire to protect her friend. Because we're dealing with a more "socially acceptable" prejudice, people are willing to see it as a completely legitimate "side" of the story, rather than identifying it for what it is.

If a white man in a white robe were to invoke the N-word on the street to a random black citizen, NOBODY would be so delicate about giving that man proper 'respect' for his 'beliefs.' At least on a cultural level, his 'beliefs' are granted to him as a fundemental right, but you will find very, VERY few people willing to placidly let his expression of those putrid belief go uncountered.

People will dismiss him as a bigot, because he is. He's not given equal consideration, not on a cultural level. It's safe to identify those particular opinions of his as prejudiced, and anyone would scoff at a similar portrayal (like yours) of his conflict with a friend of the black man as an argument between two equal points of view. The simple truth is, both points of view are NOT equal, and it's okay to say so.

40 years ago, when there were still interracial marriage laws in many states, and segregation was a hot issue, it was the same. Those with the racist point of view were given an equal amount of time and consideration by more neutral parties, and the things that we are now ashamed to even hear were listened to as a legitimate "opinion" in an open argument.

Today, our culture at large is pretty much ashamed that we ever gave people who honestly wanted there to be two sets of fountains, or to keep a black man from marrying a white woman, the sort of credibility that we once did. They had their equal time in televised "debates," whereas today, they'd be dismissed outright.

We don't do that with bigotry towards gays, lesbians, bisexual people, whatever. We're reluctant to even CALL it bigotry. Today, it's on the same level as the anti-integration debate was on decades ago. People with the sorts of ideas that Shaidalyn was fighting over are given entirely too much credibility, and I have no doubt that we're all going to be beyond ashamed of ourselves for not simply dismissing such rubbish for what it is.

It is bigotry, no matter if it comes from his religion. Make no doubt about it. One only needs to bring up the biblical arguments put forth by American politicians to defend slavery, or from Nazis defending the notion of an "Aryan race," to realize that just because something stems from a religious belief, that does NOT mean you have to respect it. You've got to let them have the belief, true, but ...

If it's ridiculous enough, hateful enough, and just plain STUPID enough, it's OKAY to point it out for what it is: bigotry. The word "religion" doesn't coat something in a microfilm of Teflon. It's okay to criticize it, I promise you. And no ... your criticism of his religious beliefs, at least about this particular issue, is not even in the same UNIVERSE as his assault on Shaidalyn's friend.

Not all beliefs are created equal. If we feel free to ridicule, express disgust over, and dismiss outright the K.K.K.'s "beliefs," because they are so very OBVIOUS to our modern level of cultural sensitivity as sheer idiocy, then we can do the same to those who carry signs that say "God hates Fags."

I know I've made this point ten times, but it bears repeating: you don't have to create an equality between Shaidalyn's belief that her friend has a right to exist as she is, unassaulted, and the Biblethumper's belief that her friend is a sinner for daring to exist, because they simply AREN'T equal. There will come a day in which saying something like what this person said will yield the same kind of dismissive disgust as someone today saying that they think black people are genetically inferior to whites.

"Religion, not hatred" means nothing. It's entirely possible for religion to BE hatred. His bigoted views gain no special protection from being called what they are because they are religious in nature. Once more -- not all beliefs are equal, and not all necessarily garner respect. Allowing someone to keep them is not the same as being required to give them LEGITIMACY.

Can you see how wildly inaccurate an assertion like this is, now, bearing all of that in mind? It's not on the same ground as a simple discussion about whether or not the drug restrictions within Major Leage Baseball are too strict. That's the sort of pointless, generic argument that would warrant a response like this.

In this case, one of the sets of beliefs is just plain rotten to the core. It is not "equal." It should be dismissed, as we would a neonazi explaining to us the nature of Hitler's genius. The fact that we're so reluctant to do that to someone that explains to a gay man or woman that they're going to burn in Hell, and shouldn't adopt children, is the reason behind this thread.

The fact that Shaidalyn decided to defend her friend is NOT.

Let he, who is without sin, cast the first stone.

Honestly, That is my favorite quote ever. It really cuts to the heart of every sinful matter and puts everyone on the same level. It does not matter how you sin... You practically sin by existance because we are not perfect. I agree 100% Shaid. The God I have read of seems to be one full of compassion for those who strive to be with him and uphold his faith.

Holy shit, I had no idea I had typed that much. My apologies. Truth be known, I should have been in bed hours ago.

I think I just got caught up in a flow of consciousness trap, there ... literally typing out every possible angle to my argument that I could possibly conceive of. It's thorough, but not concise. I'm really very sorry.

I think I should go to bed. :/

I still fail to see how she defended her friend. She got into an argument that became seperate from the incident that spurred it. You can see that it ended having nothing to do with her friend and everything to do with their 2 different beliefs.

The only reason we use examples like neonazis and the klukluxklan are because they are cut-and-dry evils. As truely evil as some members of the christian faith are, I pay it the respect of its beliefs holding merit beyond prooven evils of racist organizations.

The Catholic/Christian faith has a trump card of being able to say billions of people agree with them. No matter how wrong they are, its not a group worth arguing with. They don't think they are wrong, and they will never back down, until something so groundbraking occures that they are forced to acknowledge it. The problem with using a word like biggot, is that it holds the same level of insult to people as racial/ethnic slurs. The word lacks tact, and steers a conversation downwards.

If I were called a biggot or a racist, I would be deeply hurt, because I take it as one of the deepest insults a person can use. It is labeling a person as intolerant, closeminded, idiotic, irrational, and driven by hate.

I feel that as illogical as it seems to a rational being, fundamentalist Christians are trying to help when they spew the crap that guy did, and thats why it's pointless arguing with him, and what makes his behavior so different than a racist or biggot. He feels, from the depth of his convictions, that he was helping in a way, by trying to change her lifestyle to one that he feels will lead to greater enjoyment. He felt that if she could just understand that "living a life of sin" would result in negatiive repricusions, that he would be doing her a service, because thats what evanglism is all about.

This is where the difference in beliefs really occures. A biggot acts for themselves and those similar to them. A Racist does the same but narrows it down a tad to the even more irrational level of something so rooted as your skin color or ethnicity. (I suppose homosexuality gets lumped in there as well sinse many say you are born with the mindframe as much as someone is born with more melatonin.) But the mindframe of this guy was not that she was stuck as was, and that she was bad because of it. The only reason he spoke up was because he believed it was a concious choice that a person makes, and so they could just as easily choose not to. That is one of the greatest beliefs Christians hold. People can change, and forgiveness is indeffinate.

The niavety of the christian in thinking he could change her was as niave as her thinking something would be accomplished in dialoge with him. Neither respected each others beliefs beforehand, it was unlikely they were going afterwards afterwords. So again I say, she should never have sent him the tell.

Tacks onto the end of the last line here ------> and otherwise naked and ready to rape you in a non heterosexual manner.

My message to the bible-beaters that come to your door, especially those that make repeat visits. No means NO means NO! I'm not very religious, but if I wanna be I'll practice on my own time when I feel like it, I don't need to be a part of a herd or have people try to work their way into my house & preech. On a international flight back from China I got stuck next to a preecher (I was locked against the window), that 17+ hour return to my mid-stop in Chicago was the most mind numming time of my life since I stopped going to church when I was in my mid-teens.

I'm sorry for your troublesome experience, Shaidalyn. I've seen this type of thing happen often back in college, where ambitious students would knock on the doors of the flamboyantly homosexual students and say, "If you're gay, God says you're going to hell." Where's the spirit of love in talk like that? It stunned me to think these people actually thought they would make a difference that way.

There are some Christians who get it, though. I'm a pastor's kid, and was raised in a traditional church. But I'm also the person who will sit on the dorm steps with a friend during a thunderstorm listening quietly to her discuss why she fled the Catholic church and started practicing wicca. I now participate in a church that goes an extra effort to make unbelievers feel welcomed, and so we wear blue jeans, show clips from popular movies, and sometimes play Van Halen during our worship services. What I won't be is the person who feels compelled to feed you the arguments I'm sure you've heard over and over and over again. And I'll never be afraid to say, "I don't know."

Personally, had I been in your shoes, I would have just ignored this individual. I don't doubt the value of sticking up for a friend, but I also recognize that he is probably stubbornly set in his beliefs, and mere words would make little difference in his thinking. It may have been better to just ignore him than to let him think he's serving his purpose more by arguing with you.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you can continue knowing that God loves you. Any other love is insignificant by comparison.

College guys are assholes in general, and typically have more testosterone than they know what to do with. Only difference they're trying to make is in their status among the other males.

Don't think that lesbians can't be just as closed-minded as your 700 Club-watching-set.

I am the hated BI girl, even worse I'm in a sub-class of people who practice an alternate lifestyle as far as sex is concerned. Your average lesbian considers me to be a sell out, a pervert and morally confused, lmao.

I have met the lesbian equivilant of Archie Bunker who believes that things like wearing makeup, using of sex toys <ie fake cocks or dildos>, or having sex with men are completely unacceptable behaviors.

You don't have to be Christian or even straight to be a bigot lol

Once heard from a priest that the people in the slums weren't shunned or hated by "god", nor were they put there by it...they merely didn't earn their worth in life and deserve no better...Now in a perfect, logical world, that'd make absolute sense. But in the real world, I'm sorry but it's not their fault if their house got broken into and got $12000 in credit card left two weeks later, or got hit by a car and go through thousands of dollars in medical bills with a failed lawsuit.

That priest had the nerve to tell me that when a good person gets a disease, it's merely god testing their love and faith. I asked him, 'wouldn't they get better if they believed in him, then?' He said no..."if they die happy, then they have passed his test". Okay, so the whole "punishment with pestilence/festering boils" I've been told of is out the window...

But he went on. He said if you believe in Jesus, and that he died for us to pay for all of our sins, that that alone, is how you enter "paradise". That's right...by this logic, a mass murderer can get into heaven simply for saying "Jesus has already atoned for me", also anulling the use of 'the ten commandments'.

In my opinion, based on the crap I've heard...if there is a god, I'm sure /he/it loves you, but in an "As seen on Animal Cops" sortof way.

And no, I'm not a fan of religion at ALL.

Okay this is gonna be weird coming from me.... but I HATE you catholic/christian bible-thumping ignorant pieces of garbage. Mind

I don't think this was a standard "Bible-thumping" incident. A discussion was started by somebody else and he interjectted his opinion as he should be allowed to do. Then later YOU went after HIM. ESPECIALLY when you are the one that is initiatting the confrontation, don't be so quick to label him.

BTW, while I am on your side in regards to the homosexuality issue, please leave the debate of the topic to someone else. Your argument is so full of holes, the Titantic is jealous.

Your view, and anyone else's view is fine, until you try forcing it on others...you could argue religious views for hours, as long as you don't cross that one line...

If you look..... that's one SS of about .......... 150 lines... we talked for a half an hour.... I told him to not speak out as he had towards my friend... he then informed me it's "wrong". That is where the "debate" occured. I was trying to give a second voice of "please stop bothering her" which resulted in the ensuing talk about religion vs homosexuality etc.

I easily pointed out not only every fault in his accusation but about a dozen in the religion as a whole (while being a part of it, it's flaws are more obvious, but disregardable).

Kink... I understand you entirely.. I, for a long time, considered myself Bi... Men just weren't AS attractive as females to me.... Now ...... I see all men.... as nothing relationship worthy... I'm not a man hater.. I have guy friends, but I will never in my life dare to bother with one emotionally.. I got a lot of crap from the "no guys" crowd.. and the straight girls..

And so you all know this was more a GENERAL statement.. I live downtown in the city.. I get this crap all the time.. This was just an example with a name.. I don't like people telling me how to live my life when it hurts no one, yet they don't bitch to the crack-dealers a block over. -.-
There's NOTHING wrong with being straight/bi/gay/a-sexual -.-
