Blockbuster to focus on Blu-ray

Blockbuster might support Blu-Ray but apparently Walmart is getting a really cheap HD-DVD player soon. This "format war" surely is interesting. Maybe we'll see a cheap Blu-Ray player at Walmart, or maybe I'll just eventually have to pony up the cash for an HD-DVD player so I can use it to watch Heroes when that comes out.

By 2008 when those $200 HD DVD players arrive, that price point will be nothing special for either formats. As well by that point the new blu-ray software will be finished and the format will be firing on all guns. It's likely by that point Universal will go neutral.

This move doesn't surprise me. I don't know if you've ever been to a site called The Digital Bits, but they're one of the better DVD sites out there. They have a clear crystal ball, and they finally chose a side in the format war a few weeks ago. They picked Blu-Ray as the winner; or at the very least, a draw because HD can't win. It was a pretty good article.

I thought Matrix wasn't on Blu-Ray because no one gives a shit about it anymore.

The Matrix, that is.

The only reason I am surprised by this is that BlueRay discs can't take the shitty handling that people have with regular DVDs. They are a bit more fragile which would suck since they would be going through so many peoples' hands, and be honest, when was the last time you were as careful with rentals as you are with your own DVDs?

There are very few movies that I have on dvd that I would be willing to rebuy in a HD format. I would certainly buy Batman Begins again. I wouldn't mind having the first Matrix movie on Bluray. :D I'll just stick with Reloaded and Revolution on dvd. Lord of the Rings will be getting bought again.

Thx for telling me why BB was not out yet, it is actually a good thing because it will get more extras with that new software. ^^

ps. All this BluRay thing is reminding me of when I changed all my VHS to DVD. lol

Actually quite the opposite. Blurays ae very very durable. I wouldn't test it on my own movies but I've seen a video of a guy seriously screwing up his talladega nights disc, cutting with a knife, scratching it up with a metallic sponge and it kept loading until he put it over a flame and burned it for a few seconds. They have a good protective material around them.

Then maybe the movies and games are different. I have seen games with minimal scratches not even be able to load or play at all. I have yet to actually watch a blueray movie myself. I just have noticed that the slightest scratch can make the game not work, which pisses me off cause the workers at GameStop always seem to give me the shittiest used copies of games they can find.

EDIT: Ok, I was doing a little research for the past couple minutes. It turns out a Japanese company called TDK has developed a polymer which MOST BlueRay discs have on them that help them from not being scratched, but not all games and movies get them depending on the developer, but most have now started to use it. Without this polymer, the discs are actually more prone to being destroyed from scratches because the information is so much closer to the surface of the disc, but since almost all developers are using these BlueRay discs with the TDK Polymer on it, they are well protected.

Good to know lol

I just recieved my Planet Earth in the mail yesterday lol. Looks good in HD.

You haven't watched a blu-ray movie yet?

Anyone with a HDTV and a high def player needs to get The Departed right away.

So far the high def movie that made my jaw drop the most was watching the opening scenes of Pirates 2. Here is a picture I took and posted on avsforum, resized and cropped. It is only 720p though.

I don't know if the Departed is the best in terms of looking great, just that it's an excellent movie. As for something that'll widen your eyes, I'd lean towards Tears of the Sun or Casino Royale, both good movies on their own accord.

I did get the Planet Earth series too, very soothing. The guy's voice kind of puts me to sleep, but in a good way, hard to explain.

But on the last disc, check out the first chapter of the deep sea creatures. Some of the creatures down there are very cool looking.

Both Pirates movies and Casino Royale on Blu-Ray are fantastic.

I did not like The Departed one bit, so many little things in it I didn't like.

I will probably pick up like, the 5th Element or something lol

Well I hear the first print of the Fifth Element officially, "sucks balls," so if you wait til next month there's a redone version of it.(People with the Fifth Element already can get its exchanged free.)
