I've been experimenting some with BLU spells. Basically, a lot of people say our elemental spells are useless because they have horrible MP/DMG ratio. Perosnally, I'd say they're not. melee spells, too, are bad if you're not correctly geared for them. So I've been experimenting a little.

Heat Breath, with 1600 HP, does 800 damage unresisted.

Heat Breath: 800/168 = 4,76 DMG/MP

Now, those spells are not affected by magic attack. So let's move on to other spells. With WHM sub, Fire Spit did roughly 550 damage to IT poroggos. This was with healing gear, and abilities geared towards healing.

550/121 = 4,54 DMG/MP

I haven't tried it with BLM sub, and gear + spells set towards nuking, but I'm guessing I can get it's damage up to 700.

700/121 = 5,78 DMG/MP

Mind Blast on the other hand, did roughly 500 damage with the same gear and sub and abilities set.

500/82 = 6,09 DMG/MP

Now, I think I could rather easily get it up to 650 damage, which puts us at:

7,92 DMG/MP

Now, let's compare it to BLM. Let's say Freeze II does 1800 damage for 287 MP
Freeze II: 1800/287 = 6,27 DMG/MP

So with a few more Blue Magic Skill gear for BLU, I'm sure we can be rather good nukers in events such as Limbus and Dynamis. Especially Dynamis considering our Breath Spells doesn't seem work the same way with elemental resistance.

Any other BLU's have experimented with these spells and want to contribute?

Don't forget, you're also not dishing out immense amounts of TP like Physical Skills do. Each hit on a Physical Damage spell gives 10%. Magic Damage spells will only ever give 10%, max.

That is, ofcourse, unless they fixed that. But I don't recall seeing any update notice claiming it.

Well Uzor there is one problem with this

with physical spells you dont need as much gear needed to make them potent

with magical spells you have to go pretty deep into equips which isnt a problem well technically it is at lower tiers which kinda makes magical spells on the meh side because it takes more equip pump up the power where as melee spells will out do the magical spells with as much equip that powers them up

in other words with a fully equipped gear for magic spells ie int gear wont do as much damage as say one full set for physical spells

Also as you get higher up you get better equips available to you so magic spells would be good for only the higher tiers since the gear in the low levels doesnt compare to the higher levels(like it should)

hope that makes sense

Yeah, but I'm talking more end-game rather then early on :p As an example, our physical spells aren't all that good against HNM's, nor are they very effective in Dynamis. Atleast not from what I saw when I tried BLU out.

My magical spells, on the other hand, were surprisingly effective. The one time I was in Dynamis, I had WHM sub. But MP Drain kiss could still absorb roughly 220 MP, and my magical spell hit the mobs rather hard when they weren't resisted.

resisted being the key word.

So with more +Blue Magic Skill equipment, I do believe an elemental BLU could be rather effective in end-game events.

Certain spells seem to resist a lot more than others. I have gear for both magic DD and Phys DD. "Endgame" BLU magical DD is a joke..vs bosses at least.

Even with the corresponding elemental stave,MACC5,Skill8,etc they are trash for damage. The only thing I have not tried is Mind Blast vs a dragon, but I do not expect it to be fantastic.

can you compile the list the mobs you tested it on were they strong versus physical attacks(maybe attacks and physical spells have some correlation) or weak vs physical attacks, were they weak versus magic attacks(same theory here)

dont get me wrong im very interested in this

What?
I didn't really document it since it turned out to be a waste of MP. Most things were 50-90% resisted (on top of relatively low damage caps) or did such insignificant damage it wasn't worth it.

Try for yourself vs an EXP mob. Low damage caps, long cast times, high mp costs do not make for good dd.

Well, that's why I said we need more blue magic skill equipment to lower resist rates.

As for crap damage, when we hunted Magic Hammer, I played healer (thus reason for subbing WHM). Even though I healed and buffed, I still kept up with all the other BLU's damge through elemental spells. That's what raised my interrest in these spells.

Well, if you were keeping up with only BLU elemental magic with their DPS, they must have had some crappy gear. lol

The only thing that has done reasonably good mp:damage for me when buffed with stats/etc is magic hammer. I've gotten close to 300 damage magic hammers with less than ideal gear (THF sub). 300 damage is also worthless, but the MP drain component is useful. It feels like magic hammer resists a lot more than regular blue magic as well, even with Apollo's staff.

Naw, they had good gear. I did about 1000 damage per battle.

I think Blu magic spells can be pumped just as much as the physical ones with the corresponding INT and MND gear. But yeah I agree it's easier to pump the physical on someone without Mage gear already, plus the inventory space required to have both can be weighty.

Hi Uzor,

There is a great end-game spell effectiveness "example" (I say that rather than 'guide') at:

http://www.killingifrit.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=127610

I have to agree with Liefe on this topic. I've found in many situations that I have been best at debuffing HNM's (like Faf - Feather Tickle and Light of Penence DO work) or at controling hate with /thf (like Jorm), but "nuking" in end-game situations hasn't been the most efficient use of my MP.

I tend to use the elemental spells more for MB'ing off skillchains than straight DD. If I'm going to spend so much MP on a spell, might as well macro in my Int/Mnd gear and get the extra benefit of a MB.

The Ifrit forum is a great place to find out info on Blu. There is even an extensive test regarding Magic Hammer complete with photos.

I'm glad to see that you take Blu's potential seriously :nyam: It's an awesome and very fun job and there are lots of great things we can do.

See you in-game.

Tried it, tested it.
Only thing I'm short is morrigan gear...but even with it I doubt there would be a night&day difference. Mind Blast got up to 8XX damage, with Memento Mori. The amount of MP used is far more significant than the physical spells, as well. They're just not as good.

I too prefer to use Physical Spells as of now.

However, some mobs have stronger physical immunity, and at those places magic spells would be better. An example would be Dynamis. Granted, I only went there once with BLU, but from what I remember, physical spells were nerfed in damage for whatever reason. My magic spells were pretty much the same though.

So in order to be ready for every situation, using Magical spells would be effective.

Ya, I read that thread before :p

Actually for a spell that costs 40MP, 300dmg is pretty good. Also, were these normal casts, or were they MB'd? If they weren't MB'd, the dmg may be less resisted say, MB'd onto LIGHT sc (go go free solo sc, lol). As far as dmg, up to 68, even physical spells seem to be lacking w/o /thf (this is of course in exp parties against IT's mainly, and a few besieges). I honestly do think this bears more testing, since alot of this has been comparing it to our "melee mage" setup vs what it should be compared to, BLM's (dmg/mp ratio and casting time). For mobs that are highly resistant to physical dmg, turning a blu into a seudo blm might not be a bad idea, and as far as MP cost, play it like you would play a blm: rest, get up nuke (maybe a few debuffs), rest, repeat.

Since Blu is my only 75 job atm (working on Thf/Rng/Cor) I only go to Dynamis as Blu. I find the job incredibly effective and if I'm not careful, I do pull hate. Frightful Roar sticks 100% (including the NMs - note this is in the 4 cities, not Glacier etc...which I do not have yet), Frenetic Rip still does 600~1200 dmg (depending on TP & CA) and Hysteric/Disseverment do well too. Maybe that's not so good as I do not have any other jobs to compair it with.

My shell seems to enjoy having me along (maybe just to be the Diamondhide/Frightful Roar whore lol). I'm doing it mainly for the storyline since SE won't give us AF2 or Relic anytime soon

BTW, I was bursting with Magic Hammer on Light last night and didn't notice a major boost in Dmg/MP drain but it is always fun to hit a mob with a giant hammer :shok:

Liefe,

/kneel....

How did you get a 300 dmg Magic Hammer? I'd love to know your gear setup as the most I've gotten, with Int/Mnd gear is about 145-ish on EM/IT's and even when I MB'd with Hammer it was still around the same amount. I feel so gimp :jester:

Liefe is annoyingly good at all his jobs. First NA BLU I know of so he's had time to test everything.

I'm assuming

Apollo's Staff
Memento Mori
Burst Affinity
MB :p
