I'm sure you've all noticed the increasing amount of bot threads that have been popping up lately (mostly in the Flameboard now). I've been trying to think of some way to fix this and I was wondering, is it possible to make it so that a new account cannot post links in it first few posts?
I don't know if it'll help stop them, but it might keep those links off of the site which for all we know might have some sorta malware on them.

So any other thoughts on this subject?

I don't know about the mod's available to these types of boards, but I know that there are mods that exist for phpBB boards that you can modify so that new users have to have a certain number of posts before they can have a signature, though this doesn't necessarily prevent them from posting links.

I'm not so sure you can disable that option to "not post links" though there might be a way to disable using any BB codes.

I'll look into it. I could screen new users but the percentage of them being spammers vs actual users is relatively small (even if it doesnt seem that way).

Could we have an 'entrance exam' type thing? Like, make people choose some things about themselves, say Job/Race LS: ?

I don't think a bot could get past that.

we could implement captchas, those wacky numbers and letters inside a picture but those are a pain for users too.

Captcha? Who in their stoned mind came up with that?

No.

As for requiring a certain number of posts prior to posting links... Wouldn't that just create more spam, 'cause then bots would be posting other stuff to get their PC to the required #?

lol@Captchas

Yeah I did think of that, but I was just trying to get an idea out there and to hopefully spark other ideas in others. It just seems more and more like the ppl and their bots are not even trying anymore (that's if you saw the original OP of the last one to pop up in the FB).

HOME's site tried to stop this with a login pop-up prompt screen (the thing that used to pop up with sneaky's sig). This site has a lot of traffic and that would probably more of a hassle to the users.

The problem is what the admin/users would have to give up to make a more bot-less forum board. Is the community willing to do so? Not sure how the admin would measure this other than a survey though. If that was conducted, are the results going to represent most of the community (always have to count in the error of people who drop out or fail/not willing to respond too)?

Is there certain scripting that allows bots to freely inbed ads and such in the forums? I am not too much of a computer tech person on this so maybe someone with better experience and knowledge can explain it better.

No no, I appreciate the fact that you're putting an idea out there, I was just playing Devil's Advocate to it, ya know? If I thought of any good ideas, I would have surely posted them^^;

I like the Captcha idea, Hotmail uses it and we all know Microsoft is the smartest person in the world.

This is the way to go. I think making users take the time tp type in 6 random letters upon registration requires minimal effort from everyone.

I agree with trippy, I've had to do it for registering for several things before, and it only takes 2 seconds; not very inconvenient at all.

I'm not sure if ya'll are aware of this, but there are like 3 threads in the FB made by these f*cking bots. This really does get annoying after a while.

I like 'em, gives me more pc+1 ops. Like this post right hurr, though this is more indirectly a pc+1.

Are people actualy annoyed by these? I mean really, its just another field to fill in.

Isn't it more fun to make fun of the bot and change the post title to something funny?

Image Verification is the way to go

Total newbie to this forum here. I'm actually a webmaster, and I had the same problem with the comment and email forms on my page. Image verificaiton (the pics of random numbers and letters) is the way to go. When I made this account, about five minutes ago, this forum used image verification, so the PHP generated image is already there. It won't be too much extra work to make it mandatory for all posts.

Also, it's really easy to add backgrounds to the images, which this forum doesn't currently have when you register. If any admins read this it'll be something like what I have below. Basically, I have 20 different background images that I use, and each one is named background(number).jpeg and are placed in the same directory as my PHP file. The $bgNUM variable pics a number between 1 and 20 randomly, and then the function imagecreatefromjpeg (built into PHP 4 and higher) places the random number at the end of the jpg name and makes a new jpeg from it. Then you can have your random letters and stuff put ontop of it.

// choose one of four background images
$bgNum = rand(1, 20);

// create an image object using the chosen background
$image = imagecreatefromjpeg("background$bgNum.jpg");

Anyway, many of the bigtime blogs and forums use it, and it doesn't interfere very much.

Another solution is to collect IPs from users, and store it in the database with their information. Then, if you have an offending user, you can easily block their IP with PHP. Just redirect them, or don't let them post. The major problem with this is that you could potentially block hundreds of other users who share the same IP or the offender could be IP spoofing.
