Bots...

you can easily block their IP with PHP
That is not as easy as it seems, some ISP will change every ones IP who is with them nightly. My ISP is an extra £1 a week for this funcation. So IP banning is not a good idea just a waste of time

I know, that's why I said, "The major problem with this is that you could potentially block hundreds of other users who share the same IP or the offender could be IP spoofing," and what you bring up is another downside as well.

I wouldn't recommend it, but it is the easiest thing to implement quickly. It may, at least, slow the bots for a time before they can implement a permanent solution.

//Get IP
if (getenv(HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR)) {
$ip = getenv('HTTP_X_FORWARD_FOR');
$host = gethostbyaddr($ip);
} else {
$ip = getenv('REMOTE_ADDR');
$host = gethostbyaddr($ip);
}
//**ABOVE**Get IP

Then an if statement

Are people actualy annoyed by these? I mean really, its just another field to fill in.

Yes, they are annoying :)
Plus, people that are color blind aren't able to read that shit.
Thats a small % of the population but still....

Justin:

Thanks for the input...

The software we use, especially the latest version, can use image verification with all sorts of neat tricks when users register so all I need to do is flick a switch to turn it on. :)

In the past, on other sites, I have used the inbuilt IP banning functions to block out specific countries in the past... If I can find some time, I'll see if these guys are all comming from the same place and try that again here.

I probably will turn back on the image captchas, at least for now.

IT looks like captchas at registration are currently turned on. If we are still having this problem, I will need to upgrade to the latest version of vbulletin which allows for more complex images to be used. It will probably be a week or two before that can happen as I need to upgrade the mods using.

Coolness

Cool, I hope it works out for you.
