So, my Bard is 75, and I currently use the Errant body due to the fact that I am piss poor and cannot afford the Sha'Ir Manteel. However, there is also a body piece "Minstrel's Coat" that I have seen so many bards wearing (though, mostly pre-70).

Does the +3 skill effects on the Minstrel's Coat outright trump the +10 CHR on the Errant Houp.? Or should I stick with the Errant Houp.?

My second question is:
Are the meritable songs for Bard are any good? It'd be great if people could provide some insight as well into these songs. I am just trying to manage where my merits are going to go, and if these aren't any good, then I'd much rather pump them into Nightingale and Trobadour(sp?) first.

Also, the Yigit body is a close second when matched with Sha'ir, so you don't need to spend money. It's an assault item.

Yigit Body is what you want if you're not going to use manteel or don't want to spend the gil on it. I used Errant up until yigit. Minstrel's is fine too, but I don't believe it trumps Errant.

As far as the meritable songs for bard, I suppose they have their applications just like anything else. I have both of them available and I have not used either much. - Enmity can be useful in the case you're trying to help the tank get it back, and + enmity helps in some cases as well, but to be honest, there are more important songs in almost every case that should be on the party instead. I find Nightingale and Troubadour much more useful. I use Troubadour in conjunction with Soul Voice to extend the effect, and Nightingale is good in a pinch; I've find it most useful in pulling when you need to get a song or two off quick and get back out there.

This.
Dont do what most tards do tho and use troubador of the bat, as it doesnt extend your soul voice duration then. Soul voice lasts 3 minutes. You sing your first batch of songs, almost let them wear, then you Troubador your soulvoice, to squeeze the most out of it.

Thanks guys. I've been eyeballing the Yigit's body for a while now since Sha'Ir Manteel is out of my reach... all I need to do is compile a lot of assault points, which is the only hindrance (still PSC and not a lot of time to do assault).

Eh, it's not that bad. Doesn't really take that much time doing the assaults, it's waiting for your tags to come back that takes the real time.

(still PSC and not a lot of time to do assault).

If you can at least rank up to PFC, that Periqua assault is pretty easy. If you can go far enough to get yourself to SP, that assault is ridiculously easy, and can be spammed 3 times in about 20 minutes.

Yea. I'm gradually getting closer to having all the gear I need (just need to open Limbus, grab Musical Earring and Loquacious Earring, get Byako's Haidate, get Yigit's body, and top it all off with getting Relic hands +1).

I'd definitely suggest Minstrel's Coat. It's rather easy to camp, since it doesn't drop anything else that's really worthwhile.

Only "better" choice is Osode (situational depending on if you have more skill+ than CHR gear). Technically Gomlek and Manteel are more luxurious items than anything, as they don't effect debuffs. But if you have the time and a good group, by all means it's worth it.

please dont wear haidate on bard... just because you can does not mean that you should.

I don't plan on partying with it... I just like the way it looks.

-10% song spellcasting time and -12% are very important for debuffs (especially lullaby) in many situations. It also cuts down time on all casts, along with helping give you a slight advantage over counter-campers (say the lower level of the Great Colibri zone).

Uh, it's good for casting buffs. But that's about it.

It's only good for casting buffs if you intend to recast that buff sooner. Haste does diddly squat for casting speed, only (spell, not JA) recast times and melee delay.

Oh, and...

Yea. I'm gradually getting closer to having all the gear I need (just need to open Limbus, grab Musical Earring and Loquacious Earring, get Byako's Haidate, get Yigit's body, and top it all off with getting Relic hands +1).

Relic hands +1 *suck* compared to AF hands +1 from Limbus. 10 singing and 7 CHR (with icing of 7 VIT for pulling) easily beats 5 wind. As it is, normal relic hands suck compared to AF hands in the first place (same argument, smaller numbers on both sides). :P

Also, AF legs +1 from Limbus are *also* simply awesome, and AF body +1 is very very nice. (It's basically an Errant body that you can take a hit in, with +10 VIT instead of -7 VIT. Also got a bit of lolstring skill.)

Between the three shiny AF+1 upgrades, Musical Earring, and Loquacious Earring, Limbus is basically a candy store for bard endgame gear.

Ah, I must've gotten confused between relic and AF for hands. I was thinking AF+1 legs, but I just need to focus on getting into a Limbus shell for that since I can't simply by ancient beastcoins like I can for the two earrings.

Also, I didn't think the AF+1 body was really any good? Well, let me rephrase that: comparative to Sha'Ir body, Yigit's body, and Kirin's Osode, it just doesn't really equate to me. I suppose it doesn't hurt to get though.

As for brd. Try to stack as much CHR gear to get close to 110 Chr. And then start stacking up on Wind/Singing + skill items. I had on my brd:
Bugard Strap
Demon Helm
Wind Torque
Melody Earring
Musical Earring
Sha ir Manteel
Choral Cuffs +1
Nereid Ring
Bahlran's Ring
Jesters+1
Gleemans Belt
Choral Cannions
Goliard Clogs
Not @ 110 cap but rly close and had some good skill +

Body +1. Sry but lol. anything that has string instrument skill + is just lol.

Sha'ir and Yigit are comparable for their one significant stat: decreased song casting time. (This makes them a macro piece anyway: have an equip line before the line where you start casting. Then after a wait of at least 1, another equip line to put some other body piece on. Casting speed items are unique in that their effects are applied when you *start* casting, not when you *finish* casting.) Between the two, Sha'ir is technically better, but Yigit is *vastly* more practical in terms of availability.

As for debuffing, you have three options with 10 CHR: Errant, Osode, AF+1.
For pulling, you have two options with 10 VIT and respectable def: Osode, AF+1.
For pure -enmity, you'd wear Crow/Raven anyway. However, for -enmity along with other useful stats (i.e. -enmity on a debuffing piece), you have two options: Errant, AF+1.

Basically AF+1 is the best aspects of Errant and Osode rolled together. Top-notch debuffing, you can take a punch, and -enmity so you're less likely to be taking a punch in an endgame situation. It doesn't have Errant's hMP (which is a point in favor of using Yigit over Sha'ir, I might add, since Yigit doubles as hMP gear). It also doesn't let you melee as well as Osode, but who cares about that on a BRD? It doesn't, however, leave you as squishy as Errant, nor does it leave you as likely to pull hate as Osode.

(Incidentally, whenever I see bards at HNM camps flaunting Osode, Zenith, and other such things with no -enmity, I just have to laugh to myself. Buffing every 2 minutes builds up quite hefty hate over a long fight, you barely have any hate buffer in which to help cure without -enmity.)

Is AF+1 body as good as legs or hands? No. It's a convenience of rolling together two good items into one good item, but it doesn't extend your capabilities. You can have an Osode for meriting and an Errant for endgame. Legs and hands, however, are flatly *upgrades*, and rather good ones too. So they're definitely higher priority. But body is very much worth getting after that. (Especially if bard's the only job you have that can use Osode, because AF+1 translates to Osode sale proceeds!)

(And by the by, for someone to write it off merely on the basis of having string skill shows a certain amount of tunnel vision and lack of overall perspective. :P)
