BRD Questions

Ah, didn't think of it that way. I completely forgot that it subtracted 3 emnity. In what situations, however, would I use the Choral Justaucorps +1? You said that it helps in long drawn out fights, but would I simply substitute it in? Wear it the entire time?

In merit parties, as you said, I'd definitely focus on getting Kirin's Osode/Yigit's (substitute Osode after debuff pull is already casted). In endgame, I understand how Errant's body is nice since it increases the amount of MP healed. However, that could also be subbed in. So in reality, I could feasibly wear the Choral Justaucorps +1 for buffing, and just wear Yigits for debuffs? Just trying to figure out when and where I should be using these pieces of gear. I appreciate your posts, by the way. Rep up. :)

I'd say that the Choral+1 is pretty good for full-time if you don't have Yigit/Manteel/Osode, 10 CHR is better than you'd get in most pieces, though I still wouldn't use it over the Osode, as i'd take the MP over String+ anyday.

Other way around. You want CHR for debuffs more than the little speed Yigit offers, as Elegy and Lullaby aren't long enough casting times to really show a difference. For buffs you don't need CHR nearly as much, making speed extremely helpful in the 12-or-so second long cast-time.

I hope that helps a bit. And if i'm mistaken someone correct me.

if you're really a badass, go for marduk head and legs. they both blow away any other piece of gear in that slot in the game right now, and you aren't sacrificing CHR for skill, so it's easier to stay at the 110 threshold

this is just my opinion for a upgrade tier, a lot of it is probably wrong and anything said in this post should be considered total bullshit. :)

weapons: pick up a terra's staff and the HQ light one (forgot the name.. still too poor to afford), get a bugard strap, you're good.

head: would start with opo crown. good mp, good chr for a starter piece at 75. my #2 would be relic head. chr, and singing skill. excellent piece. #1 piece obviously is marduk's tiara.

neck: if you're windurstian, star necklace. #1 is wind torque, no contest.

earrings: if you're elvaan or galka, you can use death earrings for mp, or musical earrings(+1) for CHR early on. optimally I would want a musical earring and loquacious

rings: need chr? get angel rings early on. later on you'll have no problem with chr, so pick up some nereid ring(s), if you have beaten ToAU, get a balrahn's ring.

body: errant houpelaude is fine early, next in my list is yigit body. it's a great piece for intermediate use. osode is really only marginally better than houpelaude, so I wouldn't use this over yigit. my #1 piece here is definitely a manteel, no contest.

hands: early, just use your AF hands. they're fine. the best piece in this slot is definitely af+1 hands. get them right away.

legs: pick up a pair of sha'ir legs. they're pretty good, and better than NQ AF legs. next, you would want to upgrade and get AF+1 legs. they're great, and most BRD use these. the best piece would definitely be marduk, really no contest here.

feet: you have a lot of choices here. starting off, you could pick up some dance shoes(+1) or sha'ir feet. #2 would be rostrum pumps or zenith pumps, both are great. #1 is goliard clogs, no contest.

back: unless you have a shit ton of CHR that you do not need at all, go with a jesters cape +1.

belt: gleeman's belt, definitely

feel free to call me an idiot for any of this :P

In a long drawn-out fight, you'd either wear it full-time, or swap in Crow/Raven for curing. (Or alternatively, if you need the MP regeneration, have your full-time wear be a Vermillion Cloak - or Dalmatica or Marduk body if you have either of those. And then macro in AF+1 for standing around.)

Regardless, if you're using MP enough to be concerned about it, 1 MP/tick in a slot (or even in two slots) is far more beneficial than *any* amount of max MP in that/those slot(s) for a fight that's long enough to say so. Well unless it's a really really short fight, but you only have to be fighting for three minutes before a Vermy is a better choice than Osode + Turban. Max MP is something to start out with when your MP is full, macro out as soon as you've spent it, and only macro back in if you're doing something to refill your MP (like resting or using Convert).

Too many people over-emphasize that usefulness. I would never endorse wearing one item over another *just* for max MP: it's much too temporary a benefit, *particularly* when MP usage is only part of your job (it *is* part of it, I have no patience for bards who never touch their MP, but it's not like pure mages that can do practically nothing without MP). Having a max MP gear set is one thing, arguing for more or less full time gear that you don't macro out is another.

In meriting, either Osode or AF+1 is just fine: Osode has a sliiiiiight advantage in that the AGI and slightly higher defense will mitigate damage a bit more. But it's nothing huge, and if you already have AF+1 that you'd be using for debuffs in drawn-out fights, you should save yourself the gil and inventory space on Osode. (Unless, of course, you have Osode for some other job that still benefits from it. RNG comes to mind.) Of course, if you're meriting as /NIN and are remotely competent at keeping shadows up and not pulling 10 mobs at once, it really doesn't matter how much damage you take when you get hit. Since you shouldn't be getting hit. I usually go Ni -> Ni when pulling unless mobs spawn on me to give me adds.

Casting speed can be macro'd in to anything (remember: casting speed is applied when you *start* casting, practically all other stats like boosts to effectiveness and decreasing resists/recasts are applied when you *finish* casting), although it has a consequent flickering effect of consecutive equip swaps. Which may be problematic. Having said that, debuffs are so quick to begin with, that you'll see the benefit more on buffs unless you're trying to outpull someone. (In which case my usual advice is the common sense of "stop effing partying at a time and in a place where you have to compete in the first place, duh.")

Apollo's Staff.

Just some aditions.
Head: Over Opo Crown, but not less than AF2 hat. Demon Helm
Legs. I used to wear AF NQ legs over Sha ir since im good in CHR
Back. Once you get Marduk legs/head you'll be able to switch that shit out for a Astute(i think thats the one) cape

Agreed with most of this. Staff Strap is preferable to Bugard Strap for any extended fight (-2 enmity > +1 CHR, and for what it's worth, it's got a bit more MP too, but I just addressed the notion of max MP). Add NQ Dark Staff to the list for resting purposes. Every mage, even ones that don't rest much like BRD, should have a Dark Staff.

Insert a Demon Helm between Opo-opo Crown and AF2 head.

Star Necklace is just as available to non-Windurstians, it's just possible they haven't done the prereq quests or gotten the fame. But yeah, it's more of an "until you can afford Wind Torque" sort of thing.

earrings: if you're elvaan or galka, you can use death earrings for mp, or musical earrings(+1) for CHR early on. optimally I would want a musical earring and loquacious

rings: need chr? get angel rings early on. later on you'll have no problem with chr, so pick up some nereid ring(s), if you have beaten ToAU, get a balrahn's ring.

Antivenom and Insomnia Earrings ace out Death Earrings for reasonable MP options these days. For higher-end MP earrings (again, max MP limitations blahblah), some good choices that have useful effects besides MP are Magnetic and Loquacious. Ideal for debuffing would be Musical + Singing or Musical + Wind.

Agreed on the ring evaluations, although some other useful rings include Minstrel's (beefiest casting speed reduction we can get, if you can maintain the latent HP: I often wear this full-time because of that and the limitations in alternative stats on rings) and, for those who do Einherjar, Omega Ring (3 CHR, 3 macc).

body: errant houpelaude is fine early, next in my list is yigit body. it's a great piece for intermediate use. osode is really only marginally better than houpelaude, so I wouldn't use this over yigit. my #1 piece here is definitely a manteel, no contest.

hands: early, just use your AF hands. they're fine. the best piece in this slot is definitely af+1 hands. get them right away.

Manteel is slightly better for casting speed than Yigit (but probably not millions upon millions of gil better), but you'd want to macro it out for debuffing for a better debuffing piece. It's not a bad combo casting speed/debuffing piece if you adamantly refuse to make yourself flicker with gear swaps (and admittedly, due to the exposed skin factor, you might not), but otherwise you can do better for debuffing with a gear swap.

Manteel's also got some haste on it, but it's really only for recasts for bards, and with the death of Mazurka hate tanking, that's kind of a non-issue. As for the other body pieces, I've already been addressing them at great length in this topic.

Hands, totally agreed. AF is really good, and AF+1 is just stupidly awesome.

legs: pick up a pair of sha'ir legs. they're pretty good, and better than NQ AF legs. next, you would want to upgrade and get AF+1 legs. they're great, and most BRD use these. the best piece would definitely be marduk, really no contest here.

Sha'ir vs. AF legs is debatable, based primarily on how much CHR you already have in other slots. Sha'ir does offer 8 CHR, which is certainly nice, but it's really super easy to get a big glut of overkill CHR already, at which point the 3 skill is better. The 8 skill from AF+1 obviously trumps both.

As for Marduk vs. AF+1, that's about the same argument as Sha'ir vs. AF: are you willing to give up 3 skill for a bunch of CHR? Which depends on how much CHR you already have.

Feet, nothing is really super shiny besides Goliard, but the other options you listed are all good calls. Dance Shoes is more of an entry level thing, but Sha'ir, Rostrum, Zenith (and a few others from ToAU era whose names escape me) are all good.

back: unless you have a shit ton of CHR that you do not need at all, go with a jesters cape +1.

belt: gleeman's belt, definitely

Jester's +1 is pretty much a constant standard except for those who can get an Astute Cape, for which it's a little more debatable because you *are* giving up one of the big huge CHR slots for the 5 singing skill there.

Waist is an obvious gimme, especially since Gleeman's Belt is so very very cheap.

the piece of armor on when the spell goes off is the armor that gives the bonuses.

Right, that would work, just be careful of the equip swaps going off fast enough. (Lullaby is only 2 second cast time to begin with, and you have to wait 1 second after equipping a slot before you can equip something else there, so you may be cutting it close.)

Personally I don't bother gear swapping for casting speed for debuffs (although I do wear Minstrel's Ring full-time), for that very reason of being so fast to begin with. I just gear swap for effectiveness for them. Buffs take longer, and there's no issue with cutting it close for them, so I do gear swap for casting speed on those.

Yeah, my inventory's cluttered enough as it is. And since I only truly appreciate it if I'm meriting, it is *painfully* easy to get yellow HP. Just deliberately let myself get hit when pulling.

Only trick is that you need to have a healer who understands this and isn't consciously and constantly trying to keep you topped off. (Every now and then they may overheal, or snag you with a curaga, or something.)

add in mp conversion gear to your brd as well for activating the ring. getting cured out of the latent is extremely common so eliminating the base problem if them reacting to low hp by simply making you not appear to have low hp at all can help. In theory it should work for the same reason blm can force the sorc ring latent without yellow hp so zenith gear is something to consider for fastcast/song speed.

Yeah, it works just fine, but it's a playstyle thing. I'd rather save the time, money, and inv space and take the minor inconvenience of spending 30 seconds explaining the ring to a healer.

You think it would work like Sorcerer's Ring but it doesn't. You can use HP>MP gear to be in a "fake yellow" and make Sorcerer's Ring work, but for whatever reason it doesn't work with Minstrel's Ring. You need to be in real yellow or lower HP

Well, there are quirks to it - Convert HP to MP reduces your current (and seemingly max) HP, but leaves your "max HP" for the purpose of the calculation, unchanged. However, things that are HP -X, MP +X just plain lower your max HP, leaving you at full by using them. An alternative method is to macro in HP+ gear to increase your HP so much that your previous max counts as yellow. (Don't try to combine this with the Convert HP to MP method.) Also, I remember reading somewhere that it only cares about max HP as determined by equipment in visible slots, not all slots...

Like I said, quirks. Someone with more experience actually doing it could probably explain better than I, since like I said, I don't bother with any of that and just let myself get hit. :P

Like I just said, the method in which you use gear that converts HP to MP that doesn't work with Minstrel's Ring. You need to be in actual yellow HP.
